Advantages of hyaluronic acid as a component of fibrin sheet for care of acute wound.

Skin injury is followed by accumulation of a fibrin based provisional matrix which normally drives the process of wound repair. Exogenous fibrin with extra cellular matrix (ECM) components can also favor the wound healing process. In a preliminary study we found that lyophilized fibrin sheet (FS) arrest bleeding from rabbit skin wound but it remained dry during the repair period and did not accelerate the healing process better than untreated control. In the current study, hyaluronic acid (HA) was incorporated into FS and the resultant HA-FS promoted water retention and improved wound healing

Back to the future: moving beyond "mesenchymal stem cells".

The last decade was dominated by dissemination of the notion that postnatal "mesenchymal stem cells," found primarily in bone marrow but also in other tissues, can generate multiple skeletal and nonskeletal tissues, and thus can be exploited to regenerate a broad range of tissues and organs. The concept of "mesenchymal stem cells" and its applicative implications represent a significant departure from the solidly proven notion that skeletal stem cells are found in the bone marrow (and not in other tissues). Recent data that sharpen our understanding of the identity, nature, origin, and in vivo

Angiogenesis regulation by TGFβ signalling: clues from an inherited vascular disease.

Studies of rare genetic diseases frequently reveal genes that are fundamental to life, and the familial vascular disorder HHT (hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia) is no exception. The majority of HHT patients are heterozygous for mutations in either the ENG (endoglin) or the ACVRL1 (activin receptor-like kinase 1) gene. Both genes are essential for angiogenesis during development and mice that are homozygous for mutations in Eng or Acvrl1 die in mid-gestation from vascular defects. Recent development of conditional mouse models in which the Eng or Acvrl1 gene can be depleted in later life

Expression of the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor neuropilin-1 at the human embryo-maternal interface.

OBJECTIVE: Angiogenesis is required for successful implantation of the invading blastocyst. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an important key player in angiogenesis and vascular remodeling during the implantation process. Besides its well-characterized receptors VEGFR1 and VEGFR2, neuropilin-1 (NRP-1) has been shown to play an additional role in the signaling process of angiogenesis in human endometrium during the menstrual cycle, as a co-receptor of VEGF. These findings led to the hypothesis that NRP-1 might play a role in the vascular remodeling process during embryo implantation

[The upper extremities revascularization in patients with brachial artery thrombosis due to its chronic damaging by crutches: new approaches to the treatment].

An optimal tactics of treatment of patients, suffering the upper extremities (UE) ischemia, caused by arterial thrombosis, occurred due to subclavian artery damage in those patients, who apply crutches for a long period of time, was elaborated. In modern medicine in patients with the UE arterial bed thrombosis with affection of its peripheral, and more in terminal, portion the possibilities of direct revascularization performance are significantly restricted, especially in patients, suffering from constant mechanical injury of armpit and its vascular content, caused by crutches. Stem cell therapy in stroke.

Recent work has focused on cell transplantation as a therapeutic option following ischemic stroke, based on animal studies showing that cells transplanted to the brain not only survive, but also lead to functional improvement. Neural degeneration after ischemia is not selective but involves different neuronal populations, as well as glial and endothelial cell types. In models of stroke, the principal mechanism by which any improvement has been observed, has been attributed to the release of trophic factors, possibly promoting endogenous repair mechanisms, reducing cell death and stimulating ne

Role of platelet-rich plasma in soft tissue root-coverage procedures: a review.

The aim of this article was to review the current evidence on the role of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in enhancing root-coverage techniques and discuss the rationale for its use in these applications. Sound biologic rationale and a multitude of basic science research support the use of PRP to promote soft tissue healing, although evidence of its role in enhancing periodontal applications, especially root coverage, is limited. Current scientific research has yet to elucidate all of the mechanisms by which PRP can affect soft tissue healing and assess its capacity to stimulate regeneration. Furth

Electron microscopy of cultured angiogenic endothelial cells.

Angiogenesis is a multi-step process involving migration, proliferation, and a specific spatial arrangement of endothelial cells. On the basis of a model of cultured microvascular endothelial cells derived from the bovine corpus luteum, all stages of in vitro angiogenesis as well as intussusceptive remodeling were characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. To preserve the delicate three-dimensional cellular structures for electron microscopy, modified processing techniques for both transmission and scanning electron microscopy including micro-corrosion casting of cultured

Cellular and molecular mechanisms of gastrointestinal ulcer healing.

This paper reviews cellular and molecular mechanisms of gastrointestinal ulcer healing. Ulcer healing, a genetically programmed repair process, includes inflammation, cell proliferation, re-epithelialization, formation of granulation tissue, angiogenesis, interactions between various cells and the matrix and tissue remodeling, all resulting in scar formation. All these events are controlled by the cytokines and growth factors (EGF, PDGF, KGF, HGF, TGFbeta, VEGF, angiopoietins) and transcription factors activated by tissue injury in spatially and temporally coordinated manner. These growth fact

Recent advances in endometrial angiogenesis research.

This review summarises recent research into the mechanisms and regulation of endometrial angiogenesis. Understanding of when and by what mechanisms angiogenesis occurs during the menstrual cycle is limited, as is knowledge of how it is regulated. Significant endometrial endothelial cell proliferation occurs at all stages of the menstrual cycle in humans, unlike most animal models where a more precise spatial relationship exists between endothelial cell proliferation and circulating levels of oestrogen and progesterone. Recent stereological data has identified vessel elongation as a major endom

Tumor hypoxia: causative factors, compensatory mechanisms, and cellular response.

Hypoxia is a characteristic feature of locally advanced solid tumors resulting from an imbalance between oxygen (O(2)) supply and consumption. Major causative factors of tumor hypoxia are abnormal structure and function of the microvessels supplying the tumor, increased diffusion distances between the nutritive blood vessels and the tumor cells, and reduced O(2) transport capacity of the blood due to the presence of disease- or treatment-related anemia. Tumor hypoxia is a therapeutic concern since it can reduce the effectiveness of radiotherapy, some O(2)-dependent cytotoxic agents, and photod

Dissociation of angiogenesis and osteoclastogenesis during endochondral bone formation in neonatal mice.

Invasion of the mineralized matrix by endothelial cells and osteoclasts is a key event in endochondral bone formation. To examine the putative role of osteoclast activity in the angiogenic process, we used two in vivo models of suppressed bone resorption: mice treated with the bisphosphonate clodronate and in osteoclast-deficient, osteopetrotic mice. Angiogenesis was assessed in caudal vertebrae of these neonatal mice. This model enables us to study the interaction between osteoclasts and endothelial cells during endochondral bone formation. In control conditions, sinusoid-like structures were

Salvage of ischemic digits using a lateral arm fascial flap.

Four patients underwent microvascular transfer of a lateral arm fascial flap to salvage severely ischemic digits by means of induction of neovascularization. The cause of the digital ischemia was direct trauma (crush injury) in one patient and chronic embolic phenomena (proximal arterial occlusion) in three patients. None of the patients had responded to traditional therapy, including treatment with one or more of the following: anticoagulation, lytic therapy, oral vasodilators, digital sympathectomy, and vein bypass grafting. Each patient underwent noninvasive (Doppler ultrasound, digital pre

Neovascularization (angiogenesis) after revascularization in moyamoya disease. Which technique is most useful for moyamoya disease?

The effects of direct and indirect revascularization for moyamoya disease were analyzed for each donor artery to determine which surgical procedure is most useful for the induction of neovascularization. In the past 12 years, 85 patients with moyamoya disease were surgically treated by combined surgery consisting of indirect revascularization via encephalo-duro-arterio-myo-synangiosis (EDAMS) and direct revascularization via the superficial temporal artery and the middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) bypass. Among those patients, the post-operative changes in digital subtraction angiography were e

Mast cell interactions with the nervous system: relationship to mechanisms of disease.

In summary, mast cell interactions in the nervous system are relevant to both physiological processes (i.e. reproduction) and pathologic states (i.e. inflammatory demyelination, painful disorders, toxic and metabolic disease, and tumor angiogenesis). Their physiologic roles may contribute to gender-related vulnerability to inflammatory disease and may modulate sensitivity to pain. Mast cells are universally involved in tissue repair and they release and respond to trophic factors such as NGF. These cells also produce and react to cytokines, and thus appear to play a role in tissue degeneration

Evolution of Surgical Flap Delay and Conditioning in Reconstructive Surgery.

Surgical delay is a staged technique in which selected vascular connections are interrupted before definitive flap transfer, allowing time for vascular adaptation. This narrative historical review examines its development, experimental physiology, and current use with perfusion assessment, using craniofacial and scalp reconstruction as the principal clinical example. A targeted search of PubMed/MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online), publisher archives, and the reference lists of landmark reviews was performed up to August 7, 2026, with emphasis on primary historical

Biomechanics of Plaque Rupture and Cardiovascular Calcification.

The rupture of an atheroma cap can lead to the formation of a thrombus, followed by a myocardial infarction. The development of atherosclerotic plaque vulnerable to rupture results from complex interactions among systemic, biological, and biomechanical factors. During pulsatile blood flow, the arterial wall experiences various mechanical stresses, including wall shear stresses (WSS) and vessel wall stresses. The ultimate stress needed to cause cap rupture is about five orders of magnitude greater than physiological WSS. Therefore, physiological or elevated WSS cannot cause rupture of the ather

MYDGF promotes pathological and physiological retinal angiogenesis via the Gαi1/3-Gab1-Akt-mTOR signaling.

Retinal neovascularization (RNV) is a potential vision-threatening process characterized by the abnormal growth of retinal vessels. Despite its clinical prevalence, the precise mechanisms governing RNV initiation and progression remain incompletely defined. Here we identify myeloid-derived growth factor (MYDGF) as a critical regulator of retinal vascular dynamics. Using single-cell RNA sequencing and human patient validation, we show that MYDGF is upregulated in retinal endothelial cells during proliferative diabetic retinopathy and mouse models of pathological neovascularization. In vitro, MY
