Exploratory behaviour shapes nutrient versus energy foraging priorities in Java sparrows.

Understanding the link between bird personality and food preference would help elucidate individual foraging strategies and species adaptability. However, there is a knowledge gap regarding the relationship between personality and food preference to nutritional or energetic quality. Here, we investigated how exploratory behavior, a consistent behavioral trait, influenced the selection of Java sparrows (Lonchura oryzivora) on foods with different nutritional and energetic qualities. We found that food preference varied across fast-, medium-, to slow-exploring groups. The fast- and medium-explor

Candida auris uses nutrient sensing to modulate virulence and host immune responses.

The emergence of Candida auris as a pathogen required host adaptation and evasion of mammalian immunity, but the mechanisms are poorly understood. We discovered that C. auris uses nutrient sensing to tune its virulence traits and modulate immune activation in changing environments. In glucose-rich conditions (relevant to blood), C. auris suppresses its virulence traits and evades immune detection. Conversely, non-fermentable carbon sources prevalent in skin activate adhesion and filamentation, thereby triggering macrophage responses. Activation of adhesion by non-fermentable carbon sources is

Nutrient Deprivation Enhances Neuronal Survival and Induces Secretion of Protective Extracellular Vesicles.

Neurons respond to nutrient deprivation by activating autophagic pathways that promote survival under subsequent metabolic stress. Here, we show that short-term nutrient deprivation or pharmacological inhibition of mTORC1 enhances neuronal resistance to glutamate-induced excitotoxicity in primary cerebellar cultures characterized by a rapid decline in p62/SQSTM1 levels and a decrease in procaspase-3 levels, suggesting a potential mechanism for enhanced cell survival. Importantly, extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted by the neurons during transient nutrient deprivation protect naïve recipient

OGFOD1 enables AML chemo- and nutrient stress resistance by regulating protein synthesis.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) commonly relapses after initial chemotherapy response. We assessed metabolic adaptations in chemoresistant cells in vivo before overt relapse, identifying altered branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) levels in patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) and immunophenotypically identified leukemia stem cells from AML patients. Notably, this was associated with increased BCAA transporter expression with low BCAA catabolism. Restricting BCAAs further reduced chemoresistant AML cells, but relapse still occurred. Among the persisting cells, we found an unexpected increase in protein

Nutrient excess remodels islet autonomic innervation via pancreatic schwann cells.

Nutrient excess results in short- and long-term adaptations in the structure and function of metabolic organs, such as pancreatic islets. Pancreatic innervation contributes to islet architecture and function in many species, including humans, but little is known about its adaptation to over-nutrition. Here, we use 3D imaging to show that short-term high fat diet rapidly remodels islet sympathetic innervation while long-term high fat diet results in islet-specific cholinergic neuropathy. Using highly targeted, organ- and circuit-specific approaches, we demonstrate that remodeling of pancreatic

Ameba-inspired strategy enhances probiotic efficacy via prebound nutrient supply.

Nutrient competition with indigenous microbes or pathogens presents a significant challenge for oral probiotic efficacy. To address this issue, we develop an ameba-inspired food-carrying strategy (AIFS) by prebinding ginger-derived exosome-like nanoparticles (GELNs) onto probiotics as food depots. AIFS enables probiotics to efficiently and exclusively consume GELNs in situ, even in the presence of competing bacteria. This results in up to 21 times higher uptake efficiency compared to unengineered probiotics, dramatically accelerating probiotic proliferation. Meanwhile, AIFS potentiates probiot

Nutrient stress triggers sugar-mediated carotenoid production in algal-bacterial interactions.

This study examined the impact of co-culturing Chlorella saccharophila (UTEX247) with Exiguobacterium sp. strain AMK1 on carotenoid production under nitrate-depleted conditions and 3% CO₂ supplementation. The co-culture significantly enhanced the productivity of lutein (238.31 µg.L⁻¹d⁻¹), zeaxanthin (220.72 µg.L⁻¹d⁻¹), violaxanthin (185.42 µg.L⁻¹d⁻¹), and antheraxanthin (84.07 µg.L⁻¹d⁻¹). Compared to nitrate-repleted mono-cultures, these carotenoids increased by 3.54-fold, 4.81-fold, 12.28-fold, and 9.34-fold, respectively. The violaxanthin cycle, activated by CO₂ supplementation, resulted in

Seasonal Dynamic Changes in the Nutrient Elements and Antioxidant Activity of Ilex vomitoria Leaf.

Ilex vomitoria Ait. is a star substitute for "tea" in recent years. At present, research on I. vomitoria mainly focuses on its breeding and cultivation, and there are few reports on the seasonal changes of important components such as leaf nutrients. This study focuses on the leaves of the topmost annual branches of I. vomitoria. Leaves were harvested at different stages, and the nutrient elements, antioxidant substances, antioxidant capacity, and aroma components in the leaves were measured and analyzed. The results showed that the content of mineral elements, soluble sugars, vitamin C, amino…

Climate-Driven Deoxygenation of Lakes Alters the Nutrient-Toxin Profile of a Food Fish.

Climate change is rapidly altering fisheries supporting aquatic ecosystems. The implications for food security depend not only on harvest biomass but also concentrations of nutrients and toxins in fish. Using brook trout from Adirondack lakes (New York, USA), we tested whether ongoing lake deoxygenation trends will affect fish muscle omega-3 fatty acids, selenium, and mercury concentrations. Across space (16 lakes: 1 year) and time (6 years: 1 lake), anoxia decreased selenium and was associated with elevated fish mercury, with no effect on omega-3 content. Because selenium may mitigate some en…

TSLP links intestinal nutrient sensing with amplification of the ILC2-tuft cell circuit.

Group 2 innate lymphocytes (ILC2s) are prevalent in small intestine but their role during homeostasis is unclear. Here we show that thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP)-a cytokine implicated in ILC2 activation-is expressed constitutively in subepithelial fibroblasts, including telocytes and crypt-associated trophocytes, which are specialized fibroblasts necessary to sustain epithelial identity. Feeding increases TSLP and induces ILC2 type 2 cytokines that are attenuated by deletion of TSLP in fibroblasts or TSLP receptor on ILC2s. Both mouse and human intestinal fibroblasts express receptors fo

Advancing sustainable wastewater management: A comprehensive review of nutrient recovery products and their applications.

Wastewater serves as a vital resource for sustainable fertilizer production, particularly in the recovery of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). This comprehensive study explores the recovery chain, from technology to final product reuse. Biomass growth is the most cost-effective method, valorizing up to 95 % of nutrients, although facing safety concerns. Various techniques enable the recovery of 100 % P and up to 99 % N, but challenges arise during the final product crystallization due to the high solubility of ammonium salts. Among these techniques, chemical precipitation and ammonia stripping/…

The underestimated role of manganese in modulating the nutrient structure in a eutrophic seasonally-stratified reservoir.

Accumulation and subsequent release of nutrients have great potential to trigger algal blooms in lakes and reservoirs. We conducted high vertical resolution (2 m interval) monitoring at ∼monthly intervals over a year for hydrological parameters, Chl-a, ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3-) and different species of phosphorus (P) and manganese (Mn) in a 40-meter-deep subtropical reservoir (Shanmei Reservoir) in Fujian, southern China. In this seasonally stratified reservoir featured with high nutrient loading, the consistent trend in the ratio of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) to dissolved inorga…

Identification of novel nutrient sensitive human yolk sac functions required for embryogenesis.

The human yolk sac (hYS) is essential for embryo nutrient biosynthesis/transport and development. However, there lacks a comprehensive study of hYS nutrient-gene interactions. Here we performed a secondary analysis of hYS transcript profiles (n = 9 samples) to identify nutrient-sensitive hYS genes and regulatory networks, including those that associate with adverse perinatal phenotypes with embryonic origins. Overall, 14.8% highly expressed hYS genes are nutrient-sensitive; the most common nutrient cofactors for hYS genes are metals and B vitamins. Functional analysis of highly expressed hYS g

Responses to incremental nutrient supply on energy and protein metabolism in preweaning dairy calves.

Recently reviewed development objectives and feeding practices in young dairy calves require an adaptation of nutrient recommendations set for milk replacer (MR) composition. Nutrient requirements of calves younger than 21 d of age, and those of calves fed with high levels of MR are insufficiently quantified. The efficiency at which macronutrients are utilized, particularly protein, substantially diminishes with age, and little data exists for the first weeks of life. In addition, in older preruminant and ruminant calves, protein and energy can be simultaneously limiting for protein gain. Whet…
