During the past 10 years we experienced 234 patients with atrial fibrillation of whom 94 patients (40.2%) showed a paroxysmal form. Underlying diseases of these 94 patients were hypertension and/or coronary heart disease in 51 (54.3%), rheumatic valvular disease in 3 (3.2%), hyperthyroidism in 2 (2.1%), and miscellaneous diseases in 15 patients (16.0%). Idiopathic atrial fibrillation was found in the remaining 23 patients (24.5%). A stereoscopic method of observation of the larynx and the pharynx during speech utterances has been devised, making use of fiber-optic cables and a magnetic bridge. The cables are inserted via the subject's nostrils. The bridge makes the two objective lenses at the tips of the cables abut within the pharynx near the uvula, and the two images viewed through the separate lenses at the prescribed mutual distance are recorded on each frame of a 16-mm film side by side for computer processing of the three-dimensional data.

Using high-resolution multibeam interference techniques in the transmission electron microscope, images have been obtained that make possible a real-space structure analysis of a beryllium-silicon-nitrogen compound. The results illustrate the usefulness of lattice imaging in the analysis of local crystal structure in these technologically promising ceramic materials.

An internuclear ophthalmoplegia was diagnosed and recorded electro-oculographically in a patient with pontomedullary listeriosis. The etiological differential diagnosis in case of internuclear ophthalmoplegia is discussed. It is emphasized that listeria monocytogenes encephalitis should be considered because this pathology may be electively located in the pontomedullary area and because of the encreasing frequency of human listeriosis.

The UCLS questionnaire, in a form modified to include a measure of syllabus-boundness, and a questionnaire to measure psychiatric symptomatology (the MHQ) were administered to two groups of students, one seeking help for emotional problems, the other a control group. It is reported on a septennial observation of a 43 year old woman, who was admitted to the hospital in 1968 with at first unclear symptoms and who developed an azotemia within a few days. The infusion pyelogram showed a hydronephrosis with enlargement of the upper part of the ureter; the lower part of the ureter was normal.
