Smith-Lemli-Optiz syndrome: importance of ophthalmology referral and follow-up.

Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR7) gene, located on chromosomal region 11q13. This results in reduced cholesterol and increased 7-dehydrocholesterol (7DHC) levels. Accumulation of 7DHC in patients with SLOS can affect multiple organs and display a broad phenotypic expression. Ophthalmic abnormalities related to SLOS are variable but the most common is blepharoptosis. Over 50% of these patients present with self-injurious behavior, such as head banging, which can result in ocular complications an

American Academy of Ophthalmology Recommendations on Screening for Endogenous Candida Endophthalmitis.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology evaluated the practice of routine screening for intraocular infection from Candida septicemia. In the United States, ophthalmologists are consulted in the hospital to screen for intraocular infection routinely for patients with Candida bloodstream infections. This practice was established in the era before the use of systemic antifungal medication and the establishment of definitions of ocular disease with candidemia. A recent systematic review found a rate of less than 1% of routinely screened patients with endophthalmitis from Candida septicemia. Other s…

Zebrafish Model in Ophthalmology to Study Disease Mechanism and Drug Discovery.

Visual impairment and blindness are common and seriously affect people's work and quality of life in the world. Therefore, the effective the … in combination with a behavioral assessment of visual function has made it a very popular model in ophthalmology. Zebrafish has also been widely used in ocular drug discovery, such as the screening of new anti-angiogenic compounds or neuroprotective drugs, and the oculotoxicity test. In this review, we summarized the applications of zebrafish as the models of …

Unilateral Abducens Palsy and Headache in Postpartum Patient Presenting to Ophthalmology.

Postpartum patients rarely present to eye casualty. Here we report a case of a seven-day postpartum patient with sudden onset horizontal diplopia and an occipital headache from the perspective of the ophthalmology eye casualty in a tertiary hospital. Intracranial imaging ruled out any acute pathology. The patient required epidural anaesthesia during labour, and a diagnosis of a post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) with an abducens nerve palsy was reached. A blood patch was not provided in this case. The headache settled and the diplopia self-resolved three weeks postpartum. PDPH with extra-ocul…

Correlation of Ophthalmology Residency Application Characteristics with Subsequent Performance in Residency.

Purpose  Only from reviewing applications, it is difficult to identify which applicants will be successful ophthalmology residents. The change of the USMLE Step 1 scoring to "Pass/Fail" removes another quantitative metric. We aimed to identify application attributes correlated with successful residency performance. This study also used artificial intelligence (AI) to evaluate letters of recommendation (LOR), the Dean's letter (MSPE), and personal statement (PS). Design  Retrospective analysis of application characteristics versus residency performance was conducted. Participants  Residents who…

Blood pressure and glaucoma: At the crossroads between cardiology and ophthalmology.

Glaucoma is an optic nerve neuropathy of undetermined cause. Although many mechanisms are thought to be involved in the development and progression of the disease, only an increased intraocular pressure has been established as a clinically significant modifiable risk factor. Nevertheless, up to 40% of patients develop glaucoma without evidence of increased intraocular pressure. Ample evidence suggests that alterations in the control of arterial blood might negatively affect optic nerve function. However, evidence-based guidelines on the management of arterial blood pressure in glaucoma patient
