Ankle joint distraction.

Ankle joint distraction is a viable alternative to ankle arthrodesis or ankle replacement. A congruent, painful, mobile, and arthritic ankle joint that is treated with this technique can achieve good to excellent results. Attention to the principles (anterior osteophyte resection, equinus contracture release, and ankle joint realignment procedures) is as important for a successful outcome as the accurate application of the hinged ankle joint distraction technique itself.

The pitcher's mound: a late sequela of posterior type II SLAP lesions.

Three patients with long-standing disabling shoulder pain underwent arthroscopic examination. Two of the 3 had preoperative magnetic resonance imaging scans showing complete rotator cuff tears confirmed at surgery. The third patient was found to have a partial-thickness bursal surface cuff tear. In addition, each patient was found to have a quite prominent posterior superior glenoid osteophyte located beneath an unstable type II SLAP lesion.

[Computer tomographic evaluation of the lumbar syndrome in the degeneratively changed lumbar spine].

Computed axial tomograms of the lumbar spine of 318 patients suffering from "sciatica" were studied retrospectively. In 66% of these substantial evidence of degenerative disease of the spine was present. This condition, if severe, may produce confusing scan data and consequently complicate the diagnosis of disc herniation. The phenomenon of posterior hypertrophic osteophyte formation being associated with disc herniation is discussed.

Osteoarthrosis in a wolf (Canis lupus) radio-tracked in Minnesota.

Osteoarthrotic changes are described in the skeleton of an old wolf (Canis lupus) from Minnesota. Osteophyte formation appeared sufficient to restrict severely the range of motion of the joints. Despite this impairment the wolf ranged over 100 km2 and killed a minimum of one or two adult white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) during a 6-week period between capture and death.

Anterior Thoracic Discectomy and Fusion for Symptomatic Ventral Bone Spur Associated Type I Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak: A Technical Report and Operative Video.

STUDY DESIGN: Technical Report. OBJECTIVE: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak secondary to anterior osteophytes at the cervico-thoracic junction is a rare cause of intracranial hypotension. In this article we describe a technique for anterior repair of spontaneous ventral cerebrospinal fluid leaks in the upper thoracic spine. METHODS: In this technical report and operative video, we describe a 23-year-old male who presented with positional headaches and bilateral subdural hematoma. Dynamic CT myelography demonstrated a high flow ventral cerebrospinal fluid leak associated with a ventral osteophy…

Progressive dysphagia and neck pain due to diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis of the cervical spine: a case report and literature review.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is considered an underdiagnosed and mostly asymptomatic nonprimary osteoarthritis. The etiology of DISH remains unknown and the validated diagnostic criteria are absent. This condition is still recognized radiologically only. Rarely, large projecting anterior osteophytes result in esophageal impingement and distortion leading to dysphagia. We report the case of progressive dysphagia and neck pain due to DISH of the cervical spine in a 70-year-old man, which was surgically removed with excellent postoperative results and complete resolution of sym…

Secondary osteochondromatosis in the subacromial bursa: a report of two cases and review of the literature.

Osteochondromatosis is classified into primary and secondary lesions; primary osteochondromatosis is a tumor-like lesion, whereas secondary … e literature for histopathological findings of loose bodies and the presence or absence of acromial osteophytes. Our findings suggest that osteochondromatosis of the subacromial bursa is secondary in most cases, and that osteocartilaginous fragments from acromial osteophytes can be shed into the subacromial bursa and grow into loose bodies.

Metabolic responses of cartilage in experimentally induced osteoarthritis.

Serial metabolic responses in developing osteoarthritis induced in the right knees of a rabbit model of partial meniscectomy (PM) were studied. Controls were sham-operated (SH) right knees, left knees of all operated animals, nd right and left knees of a nonoperated series. Glycosaminoglycan and protein synthesis and cell replication were separately analysed utilising 35 SO4, 14C-Glycine, and 3H-thymidine, respectively. Pitting, ulceration, and osteophytes, seen only in the PM knees, increased over the 12-week period of study. 3H-thymidine and 14C-glycine incorporations by PM cartilage were in…

Chondromalacia of the patella. Incidence, macroscopical and radiographical findings at autopsy.

In a post-mortem series of 59 persons aged 10-50 years, 91 of the 118 patellae exhibited cartilaginous changes. These changes were most comm … ar, there was no definite sclerosing medially, where the changes in the cartilage were most marked. Osteophyte formation was sparse, but most common in the older age groups, and laterally. Osteophytes were seen only on patellae with cartilaginous changes.

Recurrent embolic cerebellar infarction due to bow hunter's syndrome of the non-dominant vertebral artery.

We describe a rare presentation of bow hunter's syndrome (BHS) involving the non-dominant vertebral artery (VA), leading to recurrent embolic cerebellar infarction. A male in his mid-70s presented with sudden-onset immobilising vertigo. MRI revealed acute cerebellar ischaemia with occlusion of the left superior cerebellar artery. Dynamic duplex ultrasonography and angiography revealed an occlusion of the left VA in the V2 segment during head rotation to the left due to an osteophyte protruding from the C3/C4 vertebrae. The patient was diagnosed with embolic strokes due to compression of the le…

Transcript-dependent effects of the CALCA gene on the progression of post-traumatic osteoarthritis in mice.

Osteoarthritis represents a chronic degenerative joint disease with exceptional clinical relevance. Polymorphisms of the CALCA gene, giving … ration and subchondral bone loss with elevated osteoclast numbers compared to αCGRP-/- and WT mice. Osteophyte formation is reduced to the same extent in CALCA-/- and αCGRP-/- mice compared to WT controls, while a reduced synovitis score is noticed exclusively in mice lacking CALCA. Our data show that expression of the PCT/CT transcript protects from the pro …

Repeated cerebellar infarction in the affected nondominant vertebral artery distribution with reversible vertebral artery occlusion elicited by head tilt: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Bow hunter's syndrome or stroke (BHS) is characterized by rotational vertebrobasilar insufficiency elicited by rotation of the n … related. Dynamic digital angiography (DA) revealed that the nondominant right VA was occluded by an osteophyte from the C4 vertebral body, and the right PICA branches were shown to be passing through the distal right VA from the left VA. These findings were observed when the patient's head was tilted to the right. An arterio-arterial embolic mechanism was su …

Etoricoxib decreases subchondral bone mass and attenuates biomechanical properties at the early stage of osteoarthritis in a mouse model.

Etoricoxib, a selective Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor, is commonly used in osteoarthritis (OA) for pain relief, however, little is know … croscopy (SEM) were performed to evaluate OA progression. We demonstrated that Etoricoxib inhibited osteophyte formation in the subchondral bone. However, it also reduced the bone volume fraction (BV/TV), lowered trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), and more microfractures and pores were observed in the subchondral bone. Moreover, Etoricoxib reduced the elastic mod …

Acute progressive adolescent idiopathic cervical kyphosis: case report.

Acute progressive adolescent idiopathic cervical kyphosis (AICK) is rare, and its treatment strategy is controversial. The authors present a case of AICK successfully treated with preoperative halo-gravity traction, followed by combined anterior-posterior surgery. A 15-year-old girl with no relevant past or family history presented with axial neck pain without any cause. A few months after the development of cervical myelopathy, cervical kyphosis progressed to 71° despite conservative treatment. CT scanning demonstrated osteophyte formation at the anterior aspect of the vertebral body. MRI sho…
