Refinements in Otoplasty Surgery: Experience of 200 Consecutive Cases Using Cartilage-Sparing Technique.

BACKGROUND: Many techniques have been described to correct prominent ears, including cartilage-suturing, cartilage-scoring, and cartilage-breaking techniques. Understanding the topography and anatomy of the auricular cartilage is crucial for performing safe otoplasty with consistent results. METHODS: Two hundred consecutive patients with prominent ears were operated on using a modified Mustardé and Furnas technique with some refinements and without performing any cartilage scoring or excision. Adequate dissection and exposure of cartilage and precise repositioning of the tail of helix (cauda

Cochlear obliteration following a translabyrinthine approach and its implications in cochlear implantation.

The most frequent sequelae following a translabyrinthine approach for vestibular schwannoma resection is complete hearing loss on the affected side. Such patients could benefit from a cochlear implant, provided that two essential requisites are met before surgery: a preserved cochlear nerve and a patent cochlea to accommodate the electrode array. The goal of our study is to determine the prevalence and extent of cochlear ossification following a translabyrinthine approach. Postoperative MRI of 41 patients were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were classified according to the degree of cochlear

Effects of posterior tympanotomy with steroids at round window on hearing recovery after revision surgery for intractable Meniere's disease.

CONCLUSIONS: At the second postoperative year, there were no significant differences between results for vertigo and hearing after endolymphatic sac drainage with steroid instillation surgery (EDSS) and EDSS with posterior tympanotomy with steroids at the round window (EDRW). In particular, as regards hearing recovery to the preoperative level, the periods after EDRW were shorter than those after the second EDSS. OBJECTIVES: Patients sometimes faces recurrent problems years after EDSS due to endolymphatic sac closure and/or disease progression. In the present study, we examined the effects of

Active middle ear implants in patients undergoing subtotal petrosectomy: new application for the Vibrant Soundbridge device and its implication for lateral cranium base surgery.

OBJECTIVE: The functional outcome of ossiculoplasties in chronic ear and lateral cranium base surgery depends on the presence of a ventilated middle ear space and is guided by the existence or absence of ossicular remnants. In patients with poorly ventilated middle ears, after multiple previous operations, missing stapes suprastructure, or after partial temporal bone resection for tumor removal, restoration of conductive hearing is not possible. The direct placement of a vibrating floating mass transducer (FMT) onto the round window membrane with obliteration of the surgical cavity is a new op

Surgical management of polyotia.

BACKGROUND: Polyotia is an extremely rare type of congenital external ear malformation, which is defined as an accessory ear that is large enough to resemble an additional pinna. The terms 'mirror ear' or 'accessory ear' are sometime used. We present our methods in correcting this malformation and summarise the aetiology. METHODS: The posterior part of the polyotia may presents with a normal ear, a constricted ear or a microtic ear. Free auricular composite tissue transplantation was used to correct the constricted ear. Ear reconstruction was applied in cases of microtia. The anterior auricle
