[Physiopathology of meningeal hemorrhage caused by aneurysmal rupture: extracerebral aspects].

Subarachnoid hemorrhage induces a lot of extracerebral disturbances such as: systemic hypertension, electrocardiographic abnormalities both morphological, rhythmic and subendocardial damages; those events have been interpreted as overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system. In biochemical changes, hyponatremia early recognized was referred during a long time to a syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone. Hyponatremia is now referred to a cerebral salt-wasting. Hypovolemia often observed supports the use of volemic expansion in the prevention and treatment of ischemic comp

Peripheral nerve-mediated glucose lowering: Mechanisms, translational strategies, and future perspectives.

Glucose homeostasis is crucial for metabolic health, with disruptions leading to hyperglycemia (e.g., diabetes affecting over 589 million adults worldwide in 2025) or hypoglycemia, both associated with severe complications like nephropathy, neuropathy, and cardiovascular disease. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is a less studied regulator of glucose balance through neural circuits involving the sympathetic, parasympathetic, sensory, and somatic nerves, which interact with organs like the liver, pancreas, and gut. This review aims to synthesize recent advances in PNS-mediated glucose loweri

A unique cardiovascular presentation of pheochromocytoma.

We describe a unique presentation of a pheochromocytoma in a normotensive teenager, who presented with symptoms of headache, neck pain, and palpitations. Holter and event monitor tracings revealed intermittent junctional rhythm causing electromechanical dyssynchrony between atrial and ventricular contraction resulting in reported symptoms. Exercise stress testing helped correlate symptomatic junctional rhythm events to episodic hypertension which led to the eventual diagnosis of pheochromocytoma. The exercise test provided insight into the physiologic coupling that the sympathetic and parasymp

Noradrenaline response to edrophonium (Tensilon) and its relation to other autonomic tests in diabetic subjects.

Noradrenaline responses following 10 mg intravenous edrophonium were assessed in 32 insulin-treated diabetic men, allocated to 4 groups according to their responses to 5 cardiovascular autonomic tests. The group with the most severe autonomic involvement had no rise in plasma noradrenaline, in contrast to the other 3 groups, whereas the heart rate fell in all 4 groups. There were significant correlations between individual noradrenaline responses, cardiovascular reflex tests, 24 hour heart rate variation and pupil cycle time, depending on whether predominantly parasympathetic or sympathetic pa

Autonomic Function in Patients With Parkinson's Disease: From Rest to Exercise.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder classically characterized by symptoms of motor impairment (e.g., tremor and rigidity), but also presenting with important non-motor impairments. There is evidence for the reduced activity of both the parasympathetic and sympathetic limbs of the autonomic nervous system at rest in PD. Moreover, inappropriate autonomic adjustments accompany exercise, which can lead to inadequate hemodynamic responses, the failure to match the metabolic demands of working skeletal muscle and exercise intolerance. The underlying mechanisms remain uncl

Highlights in clinical autonomic neuroscience: new insights into autonomic dysfunction in autism.

Investigations of autonomic nervous system biomarkers in autism have been sparse relative to its prevalence. Recent studies of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have increasingly drawn correlations between autonomic findings and psychosocial behavior. Studies of heart rate variability, pupil size, salivary alpha-amylase, and electrodermal responsiveness have shown that children with ASD differ from normally developing children in their autonomic responsiveness to visualizing human faces and other mental tasks. While some results have conflicted, much of the data appears to support

The influence of hostility and family history of cardiovascular disease on autonomic activation in response to controllable versus noncontrollable stress, anger imagery induction, and relaxation imagery.

Autonomic activation in response to controllable versus noncontrollable stress, anger imagery induction, and relaxation imagery was studied among 80 participants between the ages of 18 and 34 years. Participants differed in level of trait hostility and family history of cardiovascular disease. Results were obtained through power spectral analyses of electrocardiograph R-R intervals, which produced an index of autonomic nervous system activation. For both male and female populations, parasympathetic regulation was diminished during anger induction for individuals with high levels of trait hosti

Lipoblastomatosis combined with intestinal neuronal dysplasia.

We report the case of a male infant with multifocal lipoblastomatosis and intestinal pseudo-obstruction for whom the pathologic findings of rectal biopsy were consistent with intestinal neuronal dysplasia. Lipoblastomatosis is a benign neoplasm of human fetal white adipose tissue that mainly occurs in infants and children. Intestinal neuronal dysplasia is a disorder that clinically mimics Hirschsprung's disease and that is pathologically characterized by parasympathetic hyperganglionosis of the enteric nervous system. To our knowledge, the combination of lipoblastomatosis and intestinal neuron

The dendritic complexity and innervation of submandibular neurons in five species of mammals.

I have compared the dendritic complexity and innervation of homologous parasympathetic ganglion cells in several closely related species of mammals. In the smaller of these species (mouse, hamster, and rat), submandibular ganglion cells generally lack dendrites altogether and are innervated by a single axon. In the guinea pig, a somewhat larger species, these neurons possess rudimentary dendritic arbors and are innervated by 2 axons, on average. In the largest species investigated, the rabbit, submandibular ganglion cells have moderately complex dendritic arbors and receive innervation from se

Tumor innervation in non-central nervous system tumors: origins, mechanisms, and phenotypic plasticity.

The peripheral nervous system has emerged as an important regulator of solid tumor biology. We synthesize recent advances in cancer neuroscience, focusing on three interconnected themes: the cellular origins of tumor-associated nerves, the molecular mechanisms that govern neural recruitment and remodeling, and the resulting phenotypic plasticity within the tumor microenvironment. Tumor innervation arises through axon extension from pre-existing nerves, recruitment of neural precursors, and neuron-like transdifferentiation of non-neuronal cells. These processes are driven by neurotrophic factor

Neuro-tumor interactions in peripheral tumors.

The nervous system is now recognized as a pivotal regulator of cancer, marking a paradigm shift that recasts nerves from passive bystanders to active drivers within the tumor microenvironment (TME). This review defines the "neural niche," differentiating passive perineural invasion (PNI) from active tumor innervation. We examine how sympathetic signaling drives an "angio-metabolic switch" and immune evasion, whereas parasympathetic inputs exert context-dependent control over stemness and inflammation. We also highlight the underappreciated role of sensory neurons in promoting T-cell exhaustion

Tyrosine-hydroxylase, dopamine β-hydroxylase and choline acetyltransferase-like immunoreactive fibres in the human major sublingual gland.

OBJECTIVE: To study the innervation of the major sublingual gland by means of immunohistochemistry. DESIGN: Bioptic and autoptic specimens of the major sublingual gland of humans were examined for the presence of immunoreactivity to tyrosine hydroxylase and dopamine-β-hydroxylase, on one hand, and choline acetyltransferase, on the other, to indicate adrenergic and cholinergic nerves, respectively. RESULTS: Acini and ducts were supplied by both divisions of the autonomic nervous system. CONCLUSIONS: Mucous and seromucous cells of the human major sublingual glands may respond with secretion n

Cardiac pacemaker in high spinal cord injury.

Bradycardia followed by cardiac arrest is well documented as a complication of acute injury to the cervical spinal cord. This life-threatening bradycardia is attributed to an imbalance in the autonomic nervous system resulting from dissociation of the parasympathetic from the sympathetic responses during the stage of spinal shock. A patient with a C2 complete quadriplegia secondary to birth trauma who experienced symptomatic bradycardia, continuing for 21 months after injury despite intensive medical management, is reported. Clinical improvement followed insertion of a cardiac pacemaker. Possi

Erectile impotence in chronic alcoholics.

Erectile impotence is a common complaint in alcoholics, but its mechanism is unknown. We have studied nocturnal penile erection in 13 alcoho … dence of neurological damage than the other seven alcoholics, and two had evidence of damage to the parasympathetic nervous system. Investigation of erection during sleep in alcoholic patients with impotence may be useful in differentiating clinically between patients with psychogenic causes and patients with organic causes of impotence.

Autonomic reactivity in clinically referred children attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder versus anxiety disorder.

This study examined whether children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have lower autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity and show less stress reactivity than children with an anxiety disorder. It also explored whether such a difference was accounted for by comorbid oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) or conduct disorder (CD) in some of the ADHD children. Forty-three referred children performed a stress task, during which skin conductance (SCL) and heart rate (HR) levels were measured. Results showed that the ADHD group had similar SCL responses as the anxiety disorder group

Prenatal dexamethasone programs autonomic dysregulation in female rats.

Autonomic dysfunction is associated with cardiovascular and neurological diseases, including hypertension, heart failure, anxiety, and stress-related disorders. Prior studies demonstrated that late gestation exposure to dexamethasone (DEX) resulted in female-biased increases in stress-responsive mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR), suggesting a role for glucocorticoid-mediated programming of autonomic dysfunction. The present study investigated the influence of sympathetic (SYM) or parasympathetic (PS) blockade on cardiovascular function in male and female rat offspring of mothers

Lateralization in cluster headache: a Nordic multicenter study.

A slight predominance of cluster pain on the right side has been reported in several studies. The aim of this large retrospective Nordic multicenter study was to estimate the prevalence of right- and left-sided pain in cluster headache (CH) patients with side-locked pain, the prevalence of side shifts in episodic and chronic CH patients, and the occurrence of cranial autonomic symptoms related to pain side. Among 383 cluster patients, 55 (14%) had experienced pain side shift. Of the remaining 328 individuals without side shift, there was no significant difference between the occurrence of righ
