BACKGROUND: Classical lateral parotidectomy is the standard surgical procedure for the management of lateral lobe parotid pleomorphic adenomas in most clinical centres. Extracapsular dissection and subtotal lateral parotidectomy are alternatively discussed in current literature and preferred by many authors.
CASE: We report on a 20-year-old patient with multiple primary pleomorphic adenomas in the unilateral parotid gland, which preoperatively presented as a solitary tumour node.
CONCLUSION: Considering this case we focus on the distinctive surgical procedures for the management of parotid p

INTRODUCTION: Multiple primary tumours of the parotid glands are very rare. They may occur unilaterally or bilaterally, synchronously or metachronously. Whartin's tumour is mostly find in bilateral parotid gland tumours.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors present an unusual case of 60 years old man with bilateral, multifocal Whartin's tumour of the parotid glands. The tumours have appeared synchronously two years before the diagnosis was done. We performed bilateral superficial partial parotidectomy with removal of the tumours.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The multifocal, synchronous bilateral Wha

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma represents only 0.4% of salivary gland neoplasms. Generally affecting the parotid gland, it has been reported only twice in the sublingual gland. Controversies concerning the treatment of lymphoepithelial carcinoma exist. Although the literature generally agrees that primary surgery with adjuvant radiotherapy is part of the treatment, the benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy is not well described. This report describes the case of a 55-year-old man diagnosed with lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the sublingual gland. The patient was admitted for progressive pain in the floo

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is a term used to describe a group of highly malignant neoplasms of soft-tissue origin, with varying degrees of divergent differentiation. The occurrence of peripheral PNET in the head and neck region has been reported infrequently in the medical literature. This disease generally occurs in adolescents and young adults, and rarely occurs in children <3 years old. The current study presents an extremely rare case of pPNET of the parotid gland in a 2-year-old male, which had been previously misdiagnosed and treated as a mumps. The lesion showed the characte

Parotidectomy is the most common approach for benign salivary neoplasms. The aim of the present study was to retrospectively analyse no. 34 extracapsular lumpectomies (ELs) performed with superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) flaps on 32 patients for benign parotid tumours. Based on the extent of the surgical defect the surgical resection was associated with sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle rotation flap in 8 patients, superficial temporal artery fascial flap (STAFF) in 2, and temporalis muscle rotation flap in 2. None of the patients affected by pleomorphic adenoma or Warthin's tumour

Basal cell adenoma of salivary gland has become an established variant of monomorphic adenoma since its segregation from pleomorphic adenoma in 1967. Although there have been many comprehensive reports about benign basal cell adenomas, only rare case reports of malignant basal cell type neoplasms have appeared in the literature. Described in this report are the clinicopathologic features of 29 cases labeled basal cell adenocarcinomas that had morphologic characteristics of basal cell adenomas but infiltrative, perineural, and intravascular growth features that indicated a malignant potential.

Pleomorphic adenomas (PA) are the most prevalent benign salivary gland neoplasms. They may occur at any age, with a peak incidence between 40 and 60 years of age. They are more commonly observed in females (60%). These tumors can arise in both the major and minor salivary glands. Approximately 80% of these tumors are diagnosed in the parotid gland, whereas 10% arise in the minor salivary glands, mainly affecting the palates, followed by the lips and cheeks. This report describes two cases of unusual lesions that were diagnosed as (PA) in the minor salivary glands in our department via a review

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare tumor, accounting for about 7.5% of all salivary gland neoplasms. More frequent developing in minor salivary gland, this is a slow-growing tumor with a long-lasting natural evolution, quite aggressive locally, but which has a tendency toward local recurrence and even for distant metastasis. We conducted a retrospective study limited to a period of 10 years in a single medical institution to investigate the morphoclinical profile of this tumor. Thus, we have established that about 60% of the tumors developed in men, with near 40% of the cases in patients in th

This article presents the results of intraoperative fluorescent diagnostics via the endoscopic system for assessing the quality of photodynamic therapy (PDT) of head and neck cancer. The diagnosis and PDT procedures were performed on the five patients with malignant neoplasms of the vocal cords, lateral surface of the tongue, and trachea and cancer of the left parotid salivary gland. Molecular form of chlorin E6 (Ce6) was intravenously administered with a 1.0-1.1 mg/kg concentration for PDT. Fluorescent diagnostics (FD) was conducted before PDT and after PDT procedures. Control of PDT efficien

BACKGROUND: In the absence of unified treatment protocol, we evaluated the management and outcomes of submandibular gland cancers in an unselected patient series.
METHODS: We included all patients with resected submandibular gland cancer treated at the Helsinki University Hospital from 2000 to 2010 with a 5-year minimum follow-up.
RESULTS: Twenty-five patients with cancer represented 30% of submandibular gland neoplasms, and most were adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACCs; 56%). At presentation, 3 patients showed clinical signs of probable malignancy. Of 22 neck dissection specimens, 5 patients (2

Chondrosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal tumour of cartilaginous origin. It represents 11% of all malignant primary bone tumours, and the pelvis, ribs, femur and humerus are most frequently involved. Chondrosarcoma of the head and neck region is a rare disease, and represents approximately 0.1% of all head and neck neoplasms. This report describes a rare localisation of chondrosarcoma in a 56-year-old man who presented with swelling in the right preauricular area and mild limitation and pain in the mouth opening. Since 1959, just a few cases of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) chondrosarcoma hav

Malignant neoplasms of the salivary gland are uncommon entities in which surgical resection of the primary lesion has been accepted as a standard therapeutic option. The efficacy of radiation and systemic chemotherapy has been limited for patients with recurrent, metastatic, or unresectable disease because of unfavorable response rates and the short duration of the response. We treated one patient with recurrent adenoid cystic carcinoma arising from the sublingual gland and one patient with primary adenocarcinoma arising from the parotid gland with transfemoral intraarterial chemotherapy, base

Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are involved in the etiology of both benign and malignant epithelial lesions. The occurrence of HPV types 16 and 18 in gynecological squamous cell carcinomas is also well known. Of the herpesviruses, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is associated with, for example, undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma, endemic Burkitt's lymphoma and immunoblastic lymphoma, and human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) with Kaposi's sarcoma. As little is known about the etiological factors of salivary gland tumours, the presence of HPV, EBV, HHV-8 and human cytomegalovirus (CMV) in these tumours wer

Indications for elective treatment of the neck are not well defined in salivary gland tumors. We retrospectively reviewed 153 cases of malignant salivary gland tumors treated from 1965 to 1985 at the Hospital de Oncología, Mexico City. There were 106 parotid cancers, 26 in the submandibular gland and 21 in minor salivary glands. Median follow-up was 48 months. In T1-2 tumors there was a 12% incidence of nodal metastases as compared with 27% in T3-4 cancers (P = 0.01). Thirty-six elective neck dissections were performed. Patients with high-grade tumors had an increased risk (50%) of occult node

BACKGROUND: Carcinosarcoma of the parotid gland is an extremely rare malignancy comprising of 0.04-0.16% of all salivary gland tumors. This is the first case of an adenoid cystic carcinoma with chondrosarcoma to the best of our knowledge. They consist of distinct carcinomatous and sarcomatous components and may arise de novo or from a preexisting pleomorphic adenoma.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein we present a case of an 80-year-old white female who presented with progressively increasing left facial swelling over 6 weeks. Magnetic Resonance Imagining revealed a mass (3.4 cm) in the parotid gland

Synchronous pleomorphic adenoma in the parotid gland and parapharyngeal space are rare. We report a case of simultaneous pleomorphic adenoma in parotid gland and parapharyngeal space in a 65-year-old male presenting to the ENT outpatient department at Northwest General Hospital, Peshawar. The patient presented with a left parotid lump, intra oral examination of which revealed the left palatine tonsil to have been pushed medially. CT of the neck showed a completely separate lump in the left parapharyngeal space, and FNAC of the parotid lump was suggestive of mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The superf

The aims of this study were (1) to evaluate the transparotid facial nerve dissection approach (TFND), in which the intraparotid cervicofacial or temporofacial division is identified first through a superficial lobe incision; and (2) to compare extracapsular dissection with a TFND (ECD-TFND) with partial superficial parotidectomy with a retrograde approach (PSP) for benign tumours in the tail of the parotid gland with respect to surgical outcomes. Eighty-nine patients underwent PSP or ECD-TFND for benign tumours in the tail of the parotid gland: 49 were treated surgically with PSP and 40 with E

Superficial parotidectomy has been the gold standard for surgical removal of benign mobile parotid gland tumours. The comparatively newer technique of extracapsular dissection, which involves careful dissection of the tumour itself without the need for formal gland excision, has gained popularity in recent years. Tumours can be removed via smaller incision, and the technique reduces the risk of Frey's syndrome (gustatory sweating) and hollowing at the site of surgery. The risk of facial nerve damage can also be lower with extracapsular dissection. If done carefully, the incidence of tumour rec
