Gingival recession following apical surgery in the esthetic zone: a clinical study with 70 cases.

The present study evaluated gingival recession 1 year following apical surgery of 70 maxillary anterior teeth (central and lateral incisors, canines, and first premolars). A visual assessment of the mid-facial aspect of the gingival level and of papillary heights of treated teeth was carried out using photographs taken at pre-treatment and 1-year follow-up appointments. In addition, changes in the gingival margin (GM) and clinical attachment levels (CAL) were calculated with the use of clinical measurements, that is, pre-treatment and 1-year follow-up pocket probing depth and level of gingival

Reactions of rat odontogenic tissues to heat.

Twenty-four Wistar rats were anesthetized and 200 degrees C heat was applied for 4 minutes to each mandibular left first molar. Eight of these rats were then killed at 2, 8, and 14 weeks. The subject and control teeth were radiographed and compared. They were then prepared for histologic evaluation and scored for levels of inflammation in both the pulpal and periradicular tissues. Furcal, interproximal, and apical radiographic changes were found at all three time intervals. These changes involved progressively larger percentages of teeth at 8 and 14 weeks. Histologically, complete necrosis and

Changes in the radiographic characteristics of the mandibular alveolar process in dentate women with varying bone mineral density: a 5-year prospective study.

The association between skeletal bone mineral density (BMD) and mandibular alveolar bone mass has been reported to be rather weak, probably due to local functional factors. Many new investigations are therefore focused on assessing the mandibular bone structure. No long-term structural alterations have been reported in human mandibular bone with the exception of alveolar crest changes related to periodontal disease. The aim of this prospective study was to investigate dentate women to see if possible alterations in the radiographic characteristics of the mandibular alveolar bone are related to

The effect of human immunodeficiency virus on endodontic treatment outcome.

The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare periradicular healing between HIV positive and negative patients 1 yr after endodontic treatment of necrotic teeth with chronic apical periodontitis. The preoperative radiographs of 33 patients diagnosed with HIV and 33 medically healthy patients were scored by three endodontists using the Periapical Index (PAI) Scoring Method. Follow-up radiographs were taken 12 months after endodontic treatment and also scored with the PAI. The degree of healing, as determined by the mean PAI change, was compared between the two groups. There were no sta

Antimicrobial susceptibilities of Eubacterium, Peptostreptococcus, and Bacteroides isolated from root canals of teeth with periapical pathosis.

Eubacterium, Peptostreptococcus, and Bacteroides were isolated in high frequency from root canals with acute periapical inflammation. The antimicrobial susceptibilities of these strains were studied by determining minimum inhibitory concentrations of different agents. Although all three kinds of isolates were susceptible to penicillins, the isolates other than black-pigmented Bacteroides were less susceptible to cephems, tetracyclines, and macrorides with several resistant strains. All strains were uniformly resistant to aminoglycosides. Some differences in susceptibilities were observed among

Factors influencing the outcome of nonsurgical root canal treatment and retreatment: A retrospective study.

This study assessed the influence of diverse variables on the outcome of nonsurgical root canal treatment/retreatment. In general, 304 teeth from 218 patients were treated/retreated and the outcome evaluated by the periapical index (PAI). Teeth with apical periodontitis lesions that have not completely healed were classified as success or failure based on lenient and rigid criteria, respectively. Findings were evaluated using a logistic regression analysis. The overall success rates were 74% and 82% using the PAI-rigid and lenient success criteria, respectively. Specifically for treatment, the

[Dental foci. Role, treatment and prophylaxis in patients at risk].

A dental focus usually is a localized chronic infection that under certain circumstances may result in severe local or systemic disease. The most important dental foci are periodontitis, periapical lesions, advanced carious lesions, nonvital pulp, partially impacted teeth and root tips. Local effects of dental foci particularly are processes that may come to expression because of a compromised immunological defence, such as osteoradionecrosis. Systemic effects are mainly caused by transient bacteraemia which can occur spontaneously out of dental foci or after manipulations such as brushing, fl

Deep Learning for the Assessment of Alveolar Bone Loss on Intraoral Radiographs: A Systematic Review.

Background. Radiographic bone loss is a primary determinant of periodontitis stage. Intraoral radiographs (periapical and bitewing) are the standard projections for assessing interproximal bone levels, yet their interpretation is subjective and poorly reproducible, and previous syntheses have pooled intraoral with panoramic imaging. Objectives. To appraise and synthesise studies developing or validating deep learning (DL) models for detecting, quantifying, staging or classifying alveolar bone loss on intraoral radiographs. Methods. Seven databases and six supplementary sources were searched fr

Metformin switches cell death modes to soothe the apical periodontitis via ZBP1.

Apical periodontitis (AP) is a disease caused by pathogenic microorganisms and featured with the degradation of periapical hard tissue. Our recent research showed the crucial role of Z-DNA binding protein 1 (ZBP1)-mediated necroptosis and apoptosis in the pathogenesis of AP. However, the specific regulatory mechanisms of ZBP1 in AP are not fully elucidated. It was found that metformin has a regulatory role in cell necroptosis and apoptosis. But whether and how metformin regulates necroptosis and apoptosis through the ZBP1 in the context of AP remains unknown. This study provided evidence that
