[The impact caused by the insertion of family members in the treatment of the adult social phobic patient].

INTRODUCTION: Although several clinical studies on adult social phobic patients have been developed of late, related literature fails to present studies of interventionist nature dealing with family participation in the patient's treatment. OBJECTIVE: The present article is intended to verify the impact caused by the insertion of family members in the treatment of the adult social phobic patient. METHOD: Subjects included 15 male and 15 female patients affected by social phobia, age range 25 to 40 years, and showing depressed mood; eight caregivers were also included in the study. Instrument

A 2010 evidence-based algorithm for the pharmacotherapy of social anxiety disorder.

A growing evidence base on the management of social anxiety disorder has yielded many meta-analyses and guidelines on the pharmacotherapy of this clinically important condition. We aimed to update a pharmacotherapy algorithm for the treatment of social anxiety disorder that was developed to be concise and user friendly and that was addressed to the primary care practitioner in particular. The updated algorithm attempts to summarize succinctly the recent literature in this area, as well as to include the views of an international panel of experts with diverse experience. The algorithm comprises

The role of verbal threat information in the development of childhood fear. "Beware the Jabberwock!".

Rachman's (Behaviour Research and Therapy 15:372-387, 1977; Clinical Psychology Review 11:155-173, 1991) three pathways theory proposed that childhood fears not only arise as a consequence of direct learning experiences, but can also be elicited by means of threat information transmission. This review looks at the scientific evidence for this idea, which has accumulated during the past three decades. We review research on the influences of media exposure on children's fears, retrospective parent and child reports on the role of threat information in fear acquisition, and experimental studies t

What is the Revised Fear Survey Schedule for Children measuring?

The Fear Survey Schedule for Children-Revised (FSSC-R) is a widely used self-report questionnaire that purports to measure the number of fears and the overall level of fearfulness in children. A number of studies have shown that the ten most common childhood fears can be found on the Danger and Death subscale of the FSSC-R, with upwards of 50% of children endorsing such fears. However, some researchers (e.g., H. McCathie & S.H. Spence, 1991; Behaviour Research and Therapy, 29, 495-502) have questioned the validity of these findings, suggesting that these items do not reflect actual childhood f

Moral panic versus the risk society: the implications of the changing sites of social anxiety.

This paper compares moral panic with the potential political catastrophes of a risk society. The aim of the comparison is threefold: 1. to establish the position of risk society threats alongside more conventional moral panics; 2. to examine the conceptual shifts that accompany the new types of threats; and 3. to outline the changing research agenda. The paper suggests that as new sites of social anxiety have emerged around environmental, nuclear, chemical and medical threats, the questions motivating moral panic research have lost much of their utility. Conceptually, it examines how the roule

Fear of flying: an overview.

Flying gives the aviator a sense of power and control. Aviators challenge their own skills and test the physical limitations of the plane. They must maintain the balance between fear and joy, sacrifice and love, and risks and rewards of flying in order to continue to fly without reservation. Flying is dangerous. The danger is both real and symbolic, generating fears and anxiety. Interpretation of fear of flying spans from the psychoanalytic-endogenous on one side to the behaviouristic-exogenous on the other side. Unless strictly understood, both models should be taken to consider the interacti

Social phobia: individual response patterns and the effects of behavioral and cognitive interventions.

In the present study, the role of individual response patterns in the treatment of social phobic patients was investigated. Seventy-four patients were diagnosed as social phobics. On the basis of extreme scores on a behavioral test (the Simulated Social Interaction Test) and on a cognitive measure (the Rational Behavior Inventory), the response patterns of 39 patients were analyzed, and the patients themselves were classified as either 'behavioral reactors' or 'cognitive reactors'. Half of the patients with each response pattern received a behavioral focused treatment, i.e. social skills train

Utilization approaches and psychodynamic psychotherapy in a case of hospital phobia: an integrated approach.

Milton Erickson's approaches, including utilization techniques, were integrated with psychodynamically oriented psychotherapy in the treatment of a woman with a hospital phobia.
