Twenty-six outpatients with chronic plaque-type psoriasis vulgaris were treated five times weekly with topically applied white petrolatum and subsequent exposure to erythemogenic doses of ultraviolet radiation from fluorescent bulbs with a wavelength of 280 to 400 nm. All patients were cleared of psoriasis in ultraviolet-exposed sites in an average of 27 treatments. The combination of topically applied white petrolatum and ultraviolet radiation provides a convenient, cosmetically acceptable outpatient therapy for psoriasis.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a minimally invasive therapeutic approach based on the light-induced activation of a photosensitizer in the presence of molecular oxygen, resulting in the generation of reactive oxygen species, including singlet oxygen. Despite local selectivity and low systemic toxicity, reproducibility of PDT is restricted by non-uniform accumulation of the photosensitizer, aggregation and insufficient solubility of compounds, variability in the optical properties of tissues, hypoxia, oxygen consumption, photobleaching, and the lack of a universal measure of photodynamic dose. This article introduces a heavy-atom-free, acceptor-donor-acceptor conjugated organic photosensitizer (ADA-S), exhibiting an exceptional singlet oxygen (1O2) quantum yield (Φ∆) ∼1. The ADA-S structure integrates two thionated naphthalene-monoamide acceptors with a central thiophene donor moiety. To elucidate the impact of the extended conjugation on the photosensitizing efficiency, control molecules such as a less conjugated analogue (AD-S), an acceptor-only unit (NMIS-Br) or an un-thionated derivative (ADA-O) were studied. Through the 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran (DPBF) assay, it was evident tha

ConspectusSince the approval of cisplatin in the late 1960s, metal-based chemotherapies have garnered a continuous amount of attention. Driven by the intrinsic limitations of platinum-based therapy, neighboring elements have been investigated for clinical use, among others, in the context of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photoactivated chemotherapy (PACT). Ruthenium- and iridium-based photosensitizers (PSs) have led the field owing to their exceptional photophysical properties and low systemic toxicity. In contrast, osmium-based drug candidates have been slower to emerge, partly due to concer

In this work, we explore the use of porphyrin/fluorene assemblies as luminescent photosensitizers (PSs) for two-photon photodynamic therapy in biological media. In this context, we systematically investigated a series of star-shaped hydrophobic porphyrins bearing four arms composed of either a single fluorenyl unit or two fluorenyls linked by triple or double bonds. These fluorenyl-porphyrins, previously identified as efficient fluorescent two-photon PSs in organic solvents, were encapsulated at various loadings in poly(benzyl malate)-based polymeric nanoparticles (NPs). Notably, promising PDT

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) exploits the controlled generation of reactive species to selectively destroy target cells, offering a minimally invasive alternative to conventional cancer and antimicrobial treatments. A key determinant of PDT efficacy is the ability of the photosensitizer (PS) to localize within lipid membranes, where proximity to polyunsaturated lipids maximizes oxidative damage. Riboflavin (Rf, Vitamin B2) is a biocompatible, naturally occurring PS with absorption in the blue light range; however, its inherent hydrophilicity limits membrane interaction. Here, we report the photo

Osteomyelitis, an inflammatory disease of bone and bone marrow caused by infectious microorganisms, has long been a major clinical challenge due to the lack of consistently effective treatment strategies. Conventional therapeutic approaches, such as antibiotic therapy and surgical debridement, are frequently associated with the development of antibiotic resistance and a high risk of disease recurrence, thereby complicating long-term clinical management. In recent years, reactive oxygen species (ROS)-based nanotechnology has emerged as a promising therapeutic modality for osteomyelitis, garneri

Peri-implant diseases are important but often overlooked diseases in the spectrum of oral diseases, mainly divided into peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. Dental plaque accumulation is the initial factor for peri-implant diseases. Non-surgical treatment, which mainly involves removing dental plaque and local deposits such as calculus and residual adhesives from surface of the implant, is the primary treatment for peri-implant mucositis and the necessary step in the treatment of peri-implantitis. Non-surgical treatment methods for peri-implant diseases mainly include mechanical treatm

Verrucous xanthoma is an uncommon skin condition, most frequently occur in the oral cavity and other sites [1], and its occurrence on the glans penis is especially rare. Conventional treatment methods such as surgical excision or laser therapy often carry a risk of scarring, which may reduce glans sensitivity and negatively impact sexual function. This case report describes a successful outcome using 5-ALA PDT as a non-invasive treatment.

Lung cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. Energy-based modalities, including radiotherapy, photodynamic therapy, and radiofrequency ablation, are now integral to multidisciplinary treatment regimens for this disease. However, the clinical efficacy of these approaches is severely constrained by intrinsic tumor hypoxia, the robust DNA repair machinery of cancer cells, and the off-target toxicity inflicted upon adjacent normal tissues. To address these bottlenecks, research has demonstrated that metallic nanoparticles (MNPs), by virtue of their uniqu

Rose bengal-assisted green light photodynamic antimicrobial therapy (RB-PDAT) is a new approach being evaluated for treating infectious keratitis. Preliminary clinical evidence suggests the broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity of RB-PDAT. The therapy potentially exerts its activity by generating reactive oxygen species that inhibit microbial growth. Large clinical trials are underway to further establish a role for RB-PDAT in clinical medicine, especially recalcitrant fungal keratitis that is less responsive to conventional photodynamic therapy with riboflavin. A potential limitation of the t

The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant bacteria and emerging viruses urgently requires new antimicrobial approaches. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) combining light, photosensitizers, and molecular oxygen generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that disrupt microbial cells, including in biofilms. In this review, we present recent clinical and preclinical evidence for PDT's effectiveness against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, oral/dental pathogens, and viral structures. We highlight applications such as periodontal therapy, root canal disinfection, denture stomatitis, and s
