Chronic exposure to sunlight induces clinical, histological and physiological changes that are described as photoaging. To assess the resulting skin changes different clinical and photographic scores have been evaluated. Regarding different scoring systems a standardized grading system would be useful in a variety of indications, in particular to improve the quality of epidemiologic and clinical studies of photodamage. Photonumeric grading is considered superior to descriptive scales; however, the combination of both may suggest an advanced assessment of photodamage.

One eye each of ten healthy volunteers was tested with the Rodenstock Optic Nerve Head Analyzer on ten separate occasions. A color-coded pallor map was developed for each examination. PURPOSE: To report new findings in the CHARGE syndrome with phenotypic anomalies associated with the R2319C mutation in the CHD7 gene.
METHODS: Fundoscopic photography, ultrasonography, fluorescein angiography, optical coherence tomography (OCT). Mutational analysis of the CHD7 gene in lymphocyte DNA.
RESULTS: Large pale optic discs with a fibrous elevation and colobomata and arterio-venous anastomoses with enlarged veins in optic discs were detected. OCT revealed numerous flat cystic spaces. The genetic study revealed the R2319C mutation in the CHD7 gene.

Photic retinal injuries have been described after surgical exposure to the intense illumination systems of operating microscopes. The overall incidence of such injuries has been postulated at less than 10%. The authors prospectively studied 43 consecutive patients to determine the incidence of photic macular injuries during cataract surgery. We evaluated the efficacy of long-term cimetidine in treating hirsutism by monitoring four indices: subjective hair removal practice, grading of hair growth by the Lorenzo scale, photography, and hair weight measurement. Of 20 women with moderate to severe facial hirsutism treated with cimetidine, 300 mg four times daily, nine were followed for 48 weeks or longer. Of these nine subjects who completed 48-72 weeks of treatment, only two showed a decrease in hirsutism. None of the 11 subjects treated for less than 48 weeks had any decrease in hirsutism.
