Field high-temperature and high-humidity (HTH) stress causes soybean seed deterioration, including shrinkage, moldiness, browning, and reduced germination rate, thereby decreasing seed vigor, emergence performance, and commercial value. Clarifying the molecular mechanisms of seed vigor formation under HTH stress is critical for identifying key genes and improving spring soybean seed quality. Plant homeodomain (PHD) proteins are conserved zinc-finger transcription factors involved in chromatin remodeling and stress responses. GmPHD3, a soybean PHD family member, has only been studied via hetero

Rehmannia chingii is an important medicinal plant with immense value in scientific research. However, its mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) has not yet been characterized. Herein, based on whole-genome Illumina short reads and PacBio HiFi reads, we obtained the complete mitogenome of R. chingii through a de novo assembly strategy. We carried out comparative genomic analyses and found that, in comparison with the plastid genome (plastome) showing a high degree of structural conservation, the R. chingii mitogenome structure is relatively complex, showing an intricate ring structure with 16 conne

INTRODUCTION: The major latex proteins (MLPs) belong to the Bet v 1/PR-10 protein family, which is widely distributed among in higher plants and crucial for plant growth, hormone signaling, and abiotic stress responses. While MLP genes have been characterized in various plant species, the soybean MLP gene family and its contributions to salt tolerance remain poorly understood.
METHODS: In this study, we integrated soybean genomic and transcriptomic data to comprehensively identify MLP family members using bioinformatics approaches. We systematically analyzed their physicochemical properties,

BACKGROUND: Tomato is a globally important crop that is frequently affected by stress linked to viral infection and drought, both of which significantly reduce yield and quality. Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is a major pathogen that induces severe disease symptoms, while drought limits plant growth and productivity in general. Calcium signaling through cyclic nucleotide-gated channels (CNGCs) plays a critical role in plant responses to both biotic and abiotic stresses. However, it remains unclear how the tomato SlCNGC18, a homolog of Arabidopsis thaliana CNGC4 (DND2), regulates viral resistance

Smut disease is a major constraint on proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) production. Our previous metabolomic work in the cultivar 'Chishu 13' outlined a two-stage defense strategy involving energy metabolism at jointing and phenylpropanoid activation at heading, yet the transcriptional regulation underlying this metabolic shift remained unknown. In this follow-up study, we performed RNA-seq on the same biological samples used in our prior metabolomics analysis to directly link transcriptomic changes to metabolic outcomes. We compared asymptomatic inoculated (IA) and symptomatic inoculated (I

BACKGROUND: In sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), one paramount breeding objective is to increase grain quality. The nutritional quality and end use value of sorghum grains are primarily influenced by the proportions of tannins, starch and proteins, but the genetic basis of these grain quality traits remains largely unknown. This study aimed to dissect the natural variation of sorghum grain quality traits and identify the underpinning genetic loci by genome-wide association study.
RESULTS: Levels of starch, tannins and 17 amino acids were quantified in 196 diverse sorghum inbred lines, and 44 traits

The Damascus and Mamber breeds of goats thrive in Middle Eastern Mediterranean regions where the tannin-rich (20% of polyethylene glycol-binding tannins) brush species Pistacia lentiscus L. (lentisk) is ubiquitous. In light of the increasing recognition of the anthelmintic activity of plant tannins, we examined the effect of offering lentisk foliage for 24 days on fecal egg excretion in 5.5-month-old Damascus and Mamber kid goats (n=28) following infection with 10,000 L3 larvae of mixed gastro-intestinal nematodes (GIN). Lentisk foliage was consumed with or without a daily supplement of 20 g p

Recent outbreak of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (JE Smith), has caused considerable challenges to maize production, Zea mays L., in the world. Sustainable pest management through host plant resistance requires further confirmation of maize hybrids that reduce pest pressure during postflowering stage. In this study, the comparative resistance of kernels from 10 maize hybrids, including BC678, SC201, SC704, SC410, SC706, SC400, SC260, BK66, SC705, and BK65, was evaluated using the nutritional indices, demographic parameters, and enzymatic activities of Spodoptera frugiperda in relati

Vegetable productivity has been decreasing due to a range of stresses, both biotic and abiotic. Biotic factors mainly arise from nematodes, bacteria, viruses and fungal diseases. Traditional approaches such as chemical treatments and conventional breeding are often limited by environmental concerns and restricted genetic resources. Therefore, RNA interference (RNAi) has demonstrated significant promise as a molecular strategy for combating biotic stresses in vegetable crops, offering precision and sustainability in managing plant diseases. RNAi utilizes double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) to silence t

BACKGROUND: Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) has the benefits of high yield and nutritional value as a sustainable forage. However, the water deficit significantly limits its growth and yield performance. Nitric oxide (NO) is a signal molecule that can enhance plant tolerance. The majority of previous studies focus on the role of exogenous NO in plant tolerance. However, the underlying mechanism of endogenous NO in alfalfa drought tolerance remains largely unexplored.
RESULTS: To explore the mechanism of the endogenous NO-mediated water deficit resistance in the alfalfa, seedlings were exposed to

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is negatively impacting numerous species of nocturnally active birds. Nocturnal positive phototaxis, the movement towards ALAN, is exhibited by many marine birds and can result in stranding on land. Seabird species facing major population declines may be most at risk. Leach's Storm-Petrels (Hydrobates leucorhous) are small, threatened seabirds with an extensive breeding range in the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans. The Atlantic population, which represents approximately 40-48% of the global population, is declining sharply. Nocturnal positive phototaxis

Semi-dwarfism is one of the most important agronomic traits for many cereal crops. In the present study, a mutant with semi-dwarf and short flag leaf 1, sdsfl1, was identified and characterized. The sdsfl1 mutant demonstrated some distinguished structural alterations, including shorter plant height and flag leaf length, increased tiller numbers and flag leaf width, and decreased panicle length compared with those of wild type (WT). Genetic analysis suggested that the mutant traits were completely controlled by a single recessive gene. The SDSFL1 gene was mapped to the long arm of chromosome 3

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is endemic in Africa and parts of the Middle East. It is an emerging zoonotic disease threat to veterinary and public health. Outbreaks of the disease have severe socio-economic impacts. RVF virus emergence is closely associated with specific endorheic wetlands that are utilized by the virus' mosquito vectors. Limited botanical vegetation surveys had been published with regard to RVF virus (RVFV) ecology. We report on a phytosociological classification, analysis and description of wetland vegetation and related abiotic parameters to elucidate factors possibly associated
