PURPOSE: To study the safety and long-term stability of 11-0 Mersilene when used alone as a single running suture in corneal grafts.
METHODS: Seventeen eyes on which corneal transplants were performed with 11-0 Mersilene alone as a single running suture between October 1992 and April 1998 were entered into this study. We studied 40 patients who underwent reconstruction for chronic anterior cruciate ligament deficiency with a Dacron ligament prosthesis using a modified MacIntosh over-the-top technique, augmented with iliotibial band. Thirty patients had undergone at least 1 prior surgical procedure on the affected knee, but only 7 patients had previous anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Choice of the most suitable synthetic graft for use in peripheral vascular surgery in the lower extremity is controversial. The knitted Dacron Velour Externally Supported (EXS) graft is a recently developed vascular prosthesis which promises to be effective and durable for use in femoropopliteal and femorotibial bypass surgery. Forty two children and two young adults who were long term survivors of either intracardiac or extracardiac valve replacement with glutaraldehyde porcine valves form the basis of this report. Implantation of a small-sized biological prosthesis into a hypoplastic aortic annulus causes significant resting gradients. To make insertion of a suitable biological valve possible, we recommend enlargement of the aortic annulus by extension of the aortic incision into the anterior mitral leaflet for approximately 2 cm. The clinical findings in this series of 22 cases of subclavian steal syndrome showed a predominance of men (13:9), a mean age of 51 years, and a predominance of left subclavian artery obstruction.
