An expert panel reviewed a cluster of childhood leukemias in Fallon, Nevada, and suggested the population mixing hypothesis as an explanation. This hypothesis proposes that nonimmune children exposed to some unknown infection(s), through population mixing, are at increased risk of developing acute lymphoblastic leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The United Kingdom Childhood Cancer Study registered 3,838 children with cancer and 7,669 matched controls aged 0-14 years during 1991-1996 in England, Scotland, and Wales. Local area characteristics for each child's residential address at diagnosis

Malaria vector Anopheles and other mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) were monitored for 12 months during 1994-95 in villages of Lower Moshi irrigation area (37 degrees 20' E, 3 degrees 21' S; approximately 700 m a.s.l.) south of Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania. Adult mosquito populations were sampled fortnightly by five methods: human bait collection indoors (18.00-06.00 hours) and outdoors (18.00-24.00 hours); from daytime resting-sites indoors and outdoors; by CDC light-traps over sleepers. Anopheles densities and rates of survival, anthropophily and malaria infection were compared betw

We conducted monthly snail captures in Bananal, State of São Paulo, Brazil, between March 1998 and February 2001, to identify Schistosoma mansoni vectors, estimate seasonal population changes, and delimit foci. We also evaluated the impact of improvements in city water supply and basic sanitation facilities. We identified 28,651 vector specimens, 28,438 as Biomphalaria tenagophila, 49 of them (0.2%) infected with S. mansoni, and 213 as B. straminea, none of the latter infected. Vectors predominated in water bodies having some vegetation along their banks. Neither population density nor local v…

Rural-urban BMD differences are well described in high-income countries, typically with higher BMD in rural areas. However, despite rapid urbanization and longevity across Africa, such data remain scarce. This study compares bone and muscle health in older adults living in rural and urban Gambia. Participants aged ≥55 yr from rural (n = 209) and urban (n = 101) communities were measured with DXA (TH, FN, and LS) and peripheral QCT (pQCT; diaphyseal and epiphyseal radius and tibia). Outcomes were DXA areal BMD (aBMD), BMC, bone area (BA); pQCT total volumetric BMD (vBMD), trabecular vBMD, bone

All East African Highland Banana varieties are genetically uniform having arisen from a single clone introduced to Africa. East African Highland bananas (EAHBs) are a subgroup of triploid (AAA genome) bananas of importance to food security in the Great Lakes region of Africa. Little is known about their genetic variation, population structure and evolutionary history. Ninety phenotypically diverse EAHB cultivars were genotyped at 100 SSR microsatellite markers to investigate population genetic diversity, the correlation of genetic variability with morphological classes, and evolutionary origin

BACKGROUND: To reveal the spatio-temporal distribution of malaria vectors in the national malaria surveillance sites from 2005 to 2010 and provide reference for the current National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) in China.
METHODS: A 6-year longitudinal surveillance on density of malaria vectors was carried out in the 62 national malaria surveillance sites. The spatial and temporal analyses of the four primary vectors distribution were conducted by the methods of kernel k-means and the cluster distribution of the most widely distribution vector of An.sinensis was identified using the em

BACKGROUND: Simple modifications of typical rural house design can be an effective and relatively inexpensive method of reducing indoor mosquito vector densities and consequently decreasing malaria transmission. Public health scientists have shown the potential for house design to protect people against malaria, yet this type of intervention remains virtually ignored. A randomized-controlled study was, therefore, undertaken to determine the effects of this method of vector control on the density of indoor resting malaria vectors in a rice irrigation scheme area in lowlands of western Kenya.

The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (Guide) recommends minimum floor space per mouse based on weight, with no other factors considered. We conducted a randomized experiment to evaluate the effect of housing density on reproductive indices and corticosterone levels in lactating mice. Female mice matched for age, strain, and date-of-pregnancy were housed individually. At parturition the dams were randomly allocated to have litters culled or remain intact. The experimental group had litters culled to meet the Guide's space density requirement. Litters of the second group were mai

The risk to humans of contracting tick-borne zoonotic diseases depends on the risk of a bite from an infected tick, which can be broken down into its component parts as the number of host-seeking ticks in the environment, in particular nymphs, and the prevalence of tick-borne pathogens they are carrying. In turn, the prevalence of tick-borne pathogens is dependent upon tick biting intensity on hosts that support transmission between ticks; namely rodents. These ticks once fed moult into the next life stage and search for the next blood meal, thus posing a zoonotic risk. Here, we analyse tick b

The relationship between the pace of life and coronary heart disease (CHD) was examined in a total of 36 small, medium, and large metropolitan areas across the United States. Four indicators of pace were observed: walking speed, articulation rate (talking speed), bank teller speed (work speed), and the proportion of individuals wearing watches (concern with clock time). Pace of life was strongly related to death rates from coronary heart disease both across cities and across regions of the country. This provides support, on a sociological level, for Wright's (1988) contention that time urgency

We have investigated the annual incidence of Perthes' disease in Dumfries and Galloway (Southwest Scotland), in relation to the population density and socio-economic status. The incidence of Perthes' disease in rural Scotland is comparable with that in urban areas (15.4 per 100,000). There was a direct association between the incidence of Perthes' disease and deprivation scores, with the highest incidence in the most deprived areas. A higher incidence of Perthes' disease was noted in areas with a lower population density compared with those with a higher density. We found no correlation betwee…

Xin Dai, Ling-Yu Zhou, Jie-Xia Cao, Yan-Qi Zhang, Feng-Ping Yang, Ai-Qin Wang, Wan-Hong Wei, and Sheng-Mei Yang (2018) Population density is well known to influence animal physiology and behavior. How population density affects the aggressive behavior of the Brandt's vole (Lasiopodomys brandtii) is, however, little known. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of group density on physiologic responses and aggressive behavior of male Brandt's voles and their potential underlying neuro-mechanism. The results show that increasing group density led to elevated serum corticosterone lev…

The population densities of many organisms have changed dramatically in recent history. Increases in the population density of medically relevant organisms are of particular importance to public health as they are often correlated with the emergence of infectious diseases in human populations. Our aim is to delineate increases in density of a common disease vector in North America, the blacklegged tick, and to identify the environmental factors correlated with these population dynamics. Empirical data that capture the growth of a population are often necessary to identify environmental factors…

The incidence of human West Nile virus (WNV) varies spatially and temporally and is influenced by a wide range of biotic and abiotic factors. There are numerous important vector species, with variable geographic ranges and ecologies, considered crucial to the transmission of WNV in the coterminous United States. To date there has been a lack of a systematic investigation in the United States, at a regional scale, of the wide variety of landscape, land use, and demographic influences on WNV incidence. In this study, we use published vector species distribution maps, as well as prominent landsca

Suicide rates amongst young people, particularly males, have increased in many industrialised countries since the 1960s. There is evidence from some countries that the steepest rises have occurred in rural areas. We have investigated whether similar geographical differences in trends in suicide exist in England and Wales by examining patterns of suicide between 1981 and 1998 in relation to rurality. We used two complementary population-based indices of rurality: (1) population density and (2) population potential (a measure of geographic remoteness from large concentrations of population). We …

BACKGROUND: The São Francisco River Integration Project (PISF) may facilitate the spread of intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis to previously unaffected areas, potentially increasing disease transmission owing to human migration and environmental changes. This study aimed to describe the distribution of freshwater mollusk fauna along the river basins involved in the PISF in the state of Ceará.
METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in three municipalities in the state of Ceará (Brejo Santo, Jati, and Mauriti) located along the Meta 2N axis of the PISF. Mollusks were coll

BACKGROUND: Spatial-temporal variation exists in the density and species composition of malaria-carrying mosquitoes, which will in turn influence the transmission of the disease. While there has been extensive research on seasonality and other main drivers of the vector populations, the heterogeneity partitioned as random effects at various spatial-temporal scales is just as important but has not attracted the same attention.
METHODS: To investigate the relative contributions of the between-house, between-village and between-year variations, as well as other house-level covariates such as inh

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis occurs in Embu das Artes, where Lutzomyia longipalpis is absent, but secondary vectors are present.
METHODS: Sandflies were collected using Shannon and CDC (Center for Disease Control) light traps in a household with seropositive dogs; presence of flagellates was investigated by dissection.
RESULTS: From 11 species, 1,224 sand flies were collected, predominantly Pintomyia (Pi.) fischeri (88.6%) and Migonemyia (Mg.) migonei (8.4%). Shannon traps captured most specimens, mainly in peridomicile. Abundance was higher during spring/summer. Flagellates were detected only

Expanding tick populations and increasing Lyme disease incidence in Ottawa, Ontario, highlight the need for effective strategies to reduce human exposure in recreational areas. Ixodes scapularis is the primary tick vector of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.), the causative agent of Lyme disease in this region. We conducted a two-year experimental field trial (2022-2023) in Ottawa's Greenbelt to evaluate whether modifying trailside ecotones with woodchip borders could reduce questing tick density. Twenty 50-m trail segments across two sites were randomly assigned to intervention groups:
