The forensic psychiatric aspects of schizophrenia.

This review of the literature does seem to reveal an association between schizophrenia and a variety of antisocial behaviors that include violent crime, and even homicide, especially in North America. The literature consistently shows that since the 1950s, schizophrenics have been involved in crime and arrested more frequently than the general population, they are overrepresented in correctional settings, and they represent the majority of those found not guilty by reason of insanity. Many authors cite changes in mental health policies, particularly de-institutionalization, as one of the major

Tungiasis in domestic, wild, and synanthropic animals in Brazil.

Tungiasis is an ectoparasitic skin disease of humans and warm-blooded animals caused by fleas of the genus Tunga (Jarocki, 1938). Dogs, cats, pigs, and synanthropic rodents are the main animal reservoirs. Of the 14 known species, 12 are found in Latin America and, among these, eight are found in Brazil, including the two zoonotic species Tunga penetrans and Tunga trimamillata. Tunga penetrans predominates among humans and Brazilian pets, where the dog is the most affected species, and its presence is a risk factor associated with the disease in humans. Tunga spp. are widely distributed through

Barriers to mental health care utilization in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is frequently complicated by co-occurring psychiatric problems such as depression and anxiety that negatively affect the course and management of the illness. Yet, in most cases, these psychiatric comorbidities are neither recognized nor treated to remission. The primary purpose of this study was to identify and describe barriers to mental health care utilization for people with PD. Secondary objectives included the assessment of attitudes and preferences regarding the need for mental health services in the PD community and the acceptability of telehealth i

Risk Characterization for a Multi-Pathway Quantitative Risk Assessment Model: A Case Study on Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamas Producing E. coli Spread From Broiler Production.

This article revisits the risk characterization phase in Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) and proposes a methodological framework to translate probabilistic risk estimates into easily interpretable public health metrics, thereby facilitating risk communication. This framework adopts a top-down perspective, aiming to estimate the public health burden on a particular population associated with the exposure to a specific microbial hazard originating from a predefined production process. Such an approach is useful for risk managers to compare the relative health impacts of a food prod

Role of Oral Rabies Vaccines in the Elimination of Dog-Mediated Human Rabies Deaths.

Domestic dogs are responsible for nearly all the »59,000 global human rabies deaths that occur annually. Numerous control measures have been successful at eliminating dog-mediated human rabies deaths in upper-income countries, including dog population management, parenteral dog vaccination programs, access to human rabies vaccines, and education programs for bite prevention and wound treatment. Implementing these techniques in resource-poor settings can be challenging; perhaps the greatest challenge is maintaining adequate herd immunity in free-roaming dog populations. Oral rabies vaccines hav

Interventions for the detection, monitoring, and management of chronic non-communicable diseases in the prison population: an international systematic review.

BACKGROUND: High rates of health inequalities and chronic non-communicable diseases exist amongst the prison population. This places people in and/or released from prison at heightened risk of multimorbidity, premature mortality, and reduced quality of life. Ensuring appropriate healthcare for people in prison to improve their health outcomes is an important aspect of social justice. This review examines the global literature on healthcare interventions to detect, monitor and manage chronic non-communicable diseases amongst the prison population and people recently released from prison. [Diagnosis and treatment of late-life depression].

Late-life depression is a common pathology. The diagnosis can be difficult to make, due to intricacy of comorbidities, aging and treatments. The presentation is frequently atypical, with a high prevalence of somatic complaints. Depression is, in fact, underdiagnosed in this population and, when it is, poorly managed. This pathology constitutes a real public health problem due to impairment of functioning and quality of life, increase of comorbidities, use of health care and overall mortality, particularly by suicide. Treatment consists of psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy and/or electroconvulsive

Effectiveness of a stepped-care programme of WHO psychological interventions in migrant populations resettled in Italy: Study protocol for the RESPOND randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Migrant populations, including workers, undocumented migrants, asylum seekers, refugees, internationally displaced persons, and other populations on the move, are exposed to a variety of stressors and potentially traumatic events before, during, and after the migration process. In recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic has represented an additional stressor, especially for migrants on the move. As a consequence, migration may increase vulnerability of individuals toward a worsening of subjective wellbeing, quality of life, and mental health, which, in turn, may increase the risk of

Addressing Primary Care Needs in People Living With Sickle Cell Disease : A Narrative Review.

Adults with sickle cell disease (SCD) are living longer due to advances in care but face a growing burden of chronic comorbid conditions that fall within the scope of primary care. However, primary care providers often lack structured guidance because literature on managing these conditions in the context of SCD is limited. This article outlines clinical approaches to hypertension, diabetes, obesity, chronic constipation, reproductive health, cognitive impairments, depression, and anxiety in people living with SCD. The authors highlight relevant epidemiology, screening recommendations, and tre

Addressing global health, economic, and environmental problems through family planning.

Although obstetrician-gynecologists recognize the importance of managing fertility for the reproductive health of individuals, many are not aware of the vital effect they can have on some of the world's most pressing issues. Unintended pregnancy is a key contributor to the rapid population growth that in turn impairs social welfare, hinders economic progress, and exacerbates environmental degradation. An estimated 215 million women in developing countries wish to limit their fertility but do not have access to effective contraception. In the United States, half of all pregnancies are unplanned

Mycotic pseudoaneurysm of the radial artery following explant of infected radiocephalic fistula.

Hemodialysis has been provided free of charge by Nepal's Ministry of Health and Population since 2016, providing services to a growing population of dialysis-dependent patients nationwide. Despite expanded access to free hemodialysis, geographic and socioeconomic barriers delay the timely management of dialysis access problems in Nepal. This leads to frequent presentation with advanced complications, including infection. We present the case of a 33-year-old male patient with an infected AV fistula, whose presentation for definitive evaluation and treatment was delayed by the remote location of

Oral manifestations in HIV-infected patients: diagnosis and management.

Oral lesions have been observed since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. The number of HIV-infected patients is still increasing, especially in the heterosexual population. Oral diseases in HIV-infected patients are often more difficult to diagnose because the clinical presentations may differ from the same diseases in HIV-negative patients. HIV-associated oral lesions have diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic impact. Approximately 10% of the HIV-infected population will have oral manifestations as a first sign of their disease. In HIV-infected men oral hairy leukoplakia and oral candidias
