Spatial and temporal analysis of postural control in dyslexic children.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to examine postural control of dyslexic children using both spatial and temporal analysis. METHODS: Thirty dyslexic (mean age 9.7±0.3years) and thirty non-dyslexic age-matched children participated in the study. Postural stability was evaluated using Multitest Equilibre from Framiral®. Posture was recorded in the following conditions: eyes open fixating a target (EO) and eyes closed (EC) on stable (-S-) and unstable (-U-) platforms. RESULTS: The findings of this study showed poor postural stability in dyslexic children with respect to the non-dyslexic chil…

Postural limits of stability in premanifest and manifest Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is associated with neuronal death in basal ganglia circuits important for postural control. Despite evidence of postural instability associated with HD, postural control at the limits of stability has not been investigated in this disease. OBJECTIVE: To use computerized dynamic posturography to measure postural control at the limits of stability during the premanifest and manifest stages of HD. METHODS: Patients with manifest HD, premanifest gene carriers, and matched controls stood on mechanically locked force plates while viewing a computer screen. The

A model of the basal ganglia in voluntary movement and postural reactions.

A basal ganglia central pattern generator (CPG) is developed and its role in voluntary movements on the ground and postural reactions on a disturbed platform are studied and analysed by simulation. Biped dynamics and platform kinematics are utilised. The effects of agonist-antagonist muscular co-activation and joint stiffness are formulated. The implementation of the necessary counter-manoeuvres for maintaining balance and postural stability is studied. A control strategy, applicable to large systems, is formulated. The biped manoeuvres and transitions terminate in pre-specified intervals of t

Gastric emptying in postural tachycardia syndrome: a preliminary report.

PURPOSE: Autonomic neuropathy is widely recognized to be associated with upper gastrointestinal symptoms and abnormal (i.e., rapid or slow) gastric emptying. While patients with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) may also have gastrointestinal symptoms, our understanding of gastric-emptying disturbances in POTS is very limited. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the relationship between gastric-emptying disturbances and gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with POTS. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 22 well-characterized patients with POTS

Dynamic postural stability for double-leg drop landing.

Dynamic postural stability has been widely studied for single-leg landing, but seldom considered for double-leg landing. This study aimed to evaluate the dynamic postural stability and the influence mechanism of muscle activities during double-leg drop landing. Eight recreationally active males and eight recreationally active females participated in this study and dropped individually from three heights (0.32 m, 0.52 m, and 0.72 m). Ground reaction force was recorded to calculate the time to stabilisation. Electromyographic activities were recorded for selected lower-extremity muscles. A multi

Cognitive and postural precursors of motion sickness in adolescent boxers.

Athletic head trauma (both concussive and sub-concussive) is common among adolescents. Concussion typically is followed by motion sickness-like symptoms, by changes in cognitive performance, and by changes in standing body sway. We asked whether pre-bout body sway would differ between adolescent boxers who experienced post-bout motion sickness and those who did not. In addition, we asked whether pre-bout cognitive performance would differ as a function of adolescent boxers' post-bout motion sickness. Nine of nineteen adolescent boxers reported motion sickness after a bout. Pre-bout measures of

Clinical factors associated with abnormal postures in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal posture (AP) is often seen in Parkinson's disease (PD), and marked forms known as dropped head syndrome and camptocormia encumber daily living activities. Unlike other motor disabilities such as bradykinesia or muscular rigidity, AP is not always improved but rather deteriorated by PD medication. PURPOSE: To clarify factors associated with neck and thoracolumbar AP. METHODS: Neck flexion (NF) and thoracolumbar (TL) angles were measured in 216 consecutive PD patients and 175 elderly healthy controls. The differences in NF and TL angles between PD patients and controls wer…

Cortical control of postural balance in patients with hemiplegic stroke.

Despite its remarkable effect on the activities of daily living, the precise mechanism underlying balance control after stroke remains to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the cortical activation induced by postural perturbation in 20 patients with stroke using a 50-channel event-related functional near-infrared spectroscopy. A combination of brisk forward and backward movements of a platform without any prior cue was used as an external postural perturbation. Multi-participant analysis of oxygenated hemoglobin signals showed postural perturbation-related cortical activation in the

Postural stabilization by gripping a stick with different force levels.

Hand contact with a stationary surface reduces postural sway in healthy individuals even when the level of force applied is mechanically insufficient. To make this phenomenon more applicable to a real-life situation, where a stationary support is not available, a mobile stick was used to measure and control grip force. The effect of a supra-postural task of stick gripping on stability was tested in 18 healthy individuals during quiet standing, standing in semi-tandem, and with eyes closed. Subjects stood either holding no haptic stick, or gripping with one of six force levels ranging from 1 to

Effect of a dual task on postural control in dyslexic children.

Several studies have examined postural control in dyslexic children; however, their results were inconclusive. This study investigated the effect of a dual task on postural stability in dyslexic children. Eighteen dyslexic children (mean age 10.3±1.2 years) were compared with eighteen non-dyslexic children of similar age. Postural stability was recorded with a platform (TechnoConcept®) while the child, in separate sessions, made reflex horizontal and vertical saccades of 10° of amplitude, and read a text silently. We measured the surface and the mean speed of the center of pressure (CoP). Read

Adaptation process for standing postural control in individuals with hemiparesis.

PURPOSE: To study the adaptation process for standing postural control in patients with hemiparesis after stroke. METHODS: The changes of a standing posture developed in nine hemiparetic patients who had never maintained an upright stance alone (aged 48-62 years; 6-19 days after stroke) was evaluated by recording ground reaction forces and surface electromyographic (EMG) from lower limbs. A 60-s standing trial without any instruction about body alignment was repeated five times, and the experience-related changes of centre of pressure (COP) and integrated EMG data were estimated. RESULTS: In…

Is there an association between variables of postural control and strength in adolescents?

Is there an association between variables of postural control and strength in adolescents? The risk of sustaining sport injuries is particularly high in adolescents. Deficits in postural control and muscle strength represent 2 important intrinsic injury risk factors. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between variables of static and dynamic postural control and isometric and dynamic muscle strength and to find out whether there is an association between measures of postural control and muscle strength. Twenty-eight adolescents participated in this study (a

Impaired postural stability as a marker of premanifest Huntington's disease.

Subtle changes in fine motor control have been observed in individuals who carry the Huntington's disease (HD) mutation but have not yet manifested symptoms, referred to as premanifest HD (preHD). However, few studies have examined gross motor impairments in this population. This study sought to examine the role of sensory involvement in maintaining postural stability during the premanifest and manifest stages of HD using computerized dynamic posturography. Eleven HD participants, 22 preHD subdivided into "preHD Near" (<5 years from estimated clinical onset) and "preHD Far" (>5 years from esti

Aging of human supraspinal locomotor and postural control in fMRI.

Standing, walking, and running are sensorimotor tasks that develop during childhood. Thereafter they function automatically as a result of a supraspinal network that controls spinal pattern generators. The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate age-dependent changes in the supraspinal locomotor and postural network of normal subjects during mental imagery of locomotion and stance. Sixty healthy subjects (ages: 24-78 years), who had undergone a complete neurological, neuro-ophthalmological, and sensory examination to rule out disorders of balance and gait

Postural control in children, teenagers and adults with Down syndrome.

The goal of this work was to analyze postural control in Down syndrome (DS) participants considering three different groups composed by children, teenagers and adults with DS. An analysis of the centre of pressure (COP) displacement during standing position was therefore performed for the three groups of subjects. The obtained signal of COP was then analyzed in both time and frequency domains in order to perform a thorough analysis of the signal. Even if several parameters revealed more differences between the control and DS participants in adulthood, results indicated a divergence of these tw
