Potential Effects of Music on Non-Motor Symptoms in Parkinson's Disease: Translating Mechanisms to Therapy.

Non-motor symptoms (NMSs) are highly prevalent in Parkinson's Disease (PD) and contribute significantly to disease severity, progression, and diminished quality of life. NMSs are rooted in both physiological and psychological domains and include emotional dysfunction, autonomic dysregulation, cognitive impairment, pain exacerbation, and neural deficits. While pharmacological approaches are often employed for the alleviation of non-motor symptomology, modest efficacy and adverse side effects may limit their practical utility for individuals with PD, leaving the need for the identification of co

The Protective Role of Vigor in Volunteering Against Somatic and Psychological Symptoms in EMDR Therapists.

BACKGROUND: Empirical evidence highlights that psychotherapists and applied psychologists experience stress, anxiety, depression, emotional exhaustion, secondary traumatic stress, and other symptoms of somatic and psychological distress. Although studies suggest that volunteering can protect somatic and psychological well-being in the general population, these relationships have not been investigated in mental health professionals. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the role of volunteering and work-related characteristics in symptoms of somatic and psychological distress among psychother

Are psychologists aware of group psychological abuse? A survey on awareness of the phenomenon among Italian psychologists.

INTRODUCTION: Psychologically abusive groups are characterized by systematic influence, relational control, and leadership structures that foster dependency; however, empirical data on how mental health professionals conceptualize these phenomena remain limited. The present study investigated Italian psychologists' knowledge, representations, and professional experiences regarding psychologically abusive groups. METHODS: An online survey was administered to 232 psychologists across Italy between November 2024 and April 2025. The questionnaire explored self-assessed knowledge, information sour

Toward a Differentiated Conceptualization of Extreme Experiences and Their Relevance To Integrative Mental Health Theory.

Extreme experiences lie at the edges of human existence-and precisely for that reason, they demand the attention of psychology and psychotherapy science. However, in this context, extremes are often interpreted as pathological deviations from an assumed norm. This article argues for a conceptual re-evaluation: extremes should not be understood primarily as symptomatic distortion or disorders, but as potentially meaningful states that are relevant to psychological development. Building on historical, theoretical, and empirical perspectives, an integrative framework model is proposed that analyz

Pharmacotherapy for the soul and psychotherapy for the body.

The "mind-body" dualism has shaped the development of psychiatry. At the very beginning psychiatry was related to the mind and the rest of the medicine to the body. The main reasons for such division were lack of biological evidence for psychiatric disorders and wrong beliefs about demonic origins of "lunacy". But although the development of science offered more than enough biological evidence to understand brain as an organ of origin for psychiatric disorders, the dualism of mind and body remained alive even in the modern classification systems. One of the consequences was another dualism tha

The psychological mechanisms of fitness app gamification in promoting college students' exercise engagement: Multiple mediating roles of basic psychological needs and self-efficacy.

Drawing upon an integrative framework of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), this study investigated the influence mechanism of perceived exercise app gamification affordances on college students' exercise engagement, testing the multiple mediating roles of basic psychological needs in exercise and exercise self-efficacy. Analysis of 403 valid questionnaires using structural equation modeling and the Bootstrap method (5000 resamples) revealed that perceived exercise app gamification affordances were positively associated with exercise engagement (β = 0.475, p < .

State violence, protest suppression, and trauma outcomes: a scoping review of cumulative exposure across different political contexts.

BACKGROUND: State violence directed at protest movements represents a recurrent source of trauma exposure, yet research examining its psychological consequences remains fragmented across disciplines, exposure modalities, and political contexts. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review synthesises evidence on protest suppression and state violence to examine how repressive practices function as pathways to trauma-related outcomes across diverse settings. METHOD: Eligible sources, including peer-reviewed empirical studies, systematic and scoping reviews, and institutional or policy documents published b

On the prowl for disciplinary vassals: Neurologists, psychiatrists, and clinical psychologists discuss science, technology, and profession at the National Research Council's Conference on Relations of Psychiatry to Psychology (1921).

The 1910s were a complex and rapidly changing decade in mental hygiene, marked by institutional innovation, professional development, and the expanding reconceptualization of mental disease and maladjustment. This growth frequently generated friction between practical clinical sciences, particularly psychiatry and consulting clinical psychology. After years of mounting tension, the National Research Council convened a joint conference in 1921 on the "Relations of Psychiatry to Psychology," bringing together 12 representatives to debate and draft resolutions intended to harmonize collaboration.

An Embedded Model of Care to Address Depression in the In-Home Aged Care Setting.

OBJECTIVE: Depression is increasingly common among older Australians receiving home care, yet symptoms are often under-recognised and access to evidence-based psychological treatment remains limited. This paper introduces EMBED, a new model of care designed to improve detection, escalation and management of depression within routine home care service delivery. METHODS: We describe the development of an evidence-informed model of care for the Australian home care setting. The model draws on clinical guidelines, published evidence on late-life depression and psychological treatment, implementat

Invisible harm in patient safety: a framework and definition for preventable psychological harm in cancer care.

BACKGROUND: While patient safety is receiving increasing attention in healthcare services research and policies, it is mainly centred around prevention of physical harm. Preventable psychological harm (PPH) remains invisible in reports and quality measurements. As patients with cancer are particularly vulnerable due to the severity of their condition and therapies, they are exposed to risks such as non-physical adverse events. Recently, incidents of psychological harm have gained more attention in patient safety research, but a common and accepted definition and classification are missing. AI

Narrative-based study of spiritual health in advanced cancer patients: insights from Macao's cultural context with broader implications for Asia and beyond.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with advanced cancer frequently have substantial physical, psychological, and spiritual obstacles. Spiritual health has garnered growing attention as a crucial element of palliative care, particularly in enhancing patients' quality of life (QoL) and psychological resilience. Nevertheless, studies regarding the spiritual well-being of advanced cancer patients in Macao remain scarce. This study seeks to investigate the spiritual health and narrative experiences of advanced cancer patients in Macao, while comparing the results with worldwide perspectives to emphasize cultu

Qualitative analysis of emotional distress in burns, plastic and reconstructive surgery patients from the perspectives of cognitive and metacognitive models.

INTRODUCTION: Burns and other injuries requiring plastic and/or reconstructive surgery (BPRS) are lifechanging, often unexpected, and increase the risk of psychiatric morbidity. There are no published studies we are aware of that explores the applicability of psychological models to BPRS patients. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is the benchmark treatment in mental health but may be less effective in physical health settings. Metacognitive therapy (MCT)can be more effective than CBT in mental health settings and shows promise in reducing anxiety and depression symptoms in people with cance

Contemplative/emotion training reduces negative emotional behavior and promotes prosocial responses.

Contemplative practices are believed to alleviate psychological problems, cultivate prosocial behavior and promote self-awareness. In addition, psychological science has developed tools and models for understanding the mind and promoting well-being. Additional effort is needed to combine frameworks and techniques from these traditions to improve emotional experience and socioemotional behavior. An 8-week intensive (42 hr) meditation/emotion regulation training intervention was designed by experts in contemplative traditions and emotion science to reduce "destructive enactment of emotions" and

Information needs of Chinese surgical patients on discharge:a comparison of patients' and nurses' perceptions.

AIMS: This paper is a report of a descriptive study of Chinese abdominal surgical patients' and nurses' perceptions of discharge information needs. BACKGROUND: Discharge from hospital poses a potential threat to surgical patients' lives because they have to cope in daily life with the consequences of the illness and surgery. Recent studies indicate that nurses often underestimate or inappropriately perceive patients' discharge information needs. Few studies have examined the discharge information needs of patients who have undergone abdominal surgery, and research in Asian populations is part

Is it time to rethink how we measure the quality of life in young-onset dementia?

Young-onset dementia (YOD) presents distinct psychological, relational, and practical challenges. In their longitudinal study, Aspo et al. examine self-reported quality of life in people with YOD over two years, revealing group-level stability alongside notable individual variation. These findings challenge deficit-focused views of dementia and highlight the need for early, sustained support that preserves agency and identity. This commentary situates the study within clinical practice, calling for greater attention to the lived experiences behind quantitative measures and emphasizing the impo

Practical recommendations for the clinical evaluation of patients with hereditary ataxia and hereditary spastic paraplegia.

Hereditary ataxia (HA) and hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) are rare diseases; as such, they are rarely managed in general neurology consultations. We present a set of brief, practical recommendations for the diagnosis and management of these patients, as well as a standardised procedure for comprehensive evaluation of disability. We provide definitions for HA and "HA plus," and "pure" and "complicated" HSP; describe the clinical assessment of these patients, indicating the main complementary tests and clinical scales for physical and psychological assessment of the patients; and summarise

Reliability of psychiatric and psychological diagnoses of mental retardation severity: judgments under naturally occurring conditions.

The reliability of diagnoses of mental retardation severity was examined through the comparison of psychiatric and psychological case reports found in client records. For a sample of 126 dually diagnosed clients, overall chance-corrected agreement was .47, ranging from .38 (for diagnoses of moderate mental retardation) to .55 (for diagnoses of borderline mental retardation). Results showed that the analysis of naturally occurring variation in diagnostic practices (including variability in professional judgment and assessment methods) may offer a more realistic appraisal of the reliability of d
