PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pediatric cataract surgery remains a very important and difficult problem to manage. While dramatic advances have occurred in this field over the past 10 years, some technical aspects of surgery, changing refraction and functional outcome continue to pose significant problems. Recent interest in the relevancy of near vision tests for presbyopic aircrew members has led to the development of a photographic cockpit model. This model is used to prescribe more accurately for flying personnel. Prescriptions can be evaluated by use of trial lenses. This allows the aircrew members to experience the effect of viewing instruments in the cockpit of a C-130 aircraft.

Despite numerous investigations, the aetiology and mechanism of accommodation and presbyopia remains equivocal. Using Gaussian first-order ray tracing calculations, we examine the contribution that ocular axial distances make to the accommodation response. The effect of aging on the time of spontaneous perceptual alternation in binocular rivalry was examined in 59 subjects. Monovision (MV) contact lenses are commonly used to provide optical correction for presbyopia. Based on their review of the literature on fusional mechanisms, Erickson and Schor predicted that monocular blur associated with MV should not be sufficient to disrupt binocular fusion.
