Improving the Health of Governance: Identifying and Addressing Burnout Among Public Health Association Board Members.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused stress and burnout for governmental public health workers, negatively affecting workers' desire to remain in their professional role. In October 2022, a board for a national association assessed their professional development needs, identified manifestations of burnout, and generated strategies to address burnout. Of 21 board members invited, 16 (76%) responded. Quantitative items were summarized using descriptive analysis. Open-ended responses were summarized with thematic analysis. Board members identified balance between private and professional lives to optimiz

Test or trauma? The voiding cystourethrogram experience of young children.

Many diagnostic procedures, while necessary and appropriate, may be experienced by a child as a trauma. Health care professionals often perceive invasive procedures such as surgery and needle biopsies as more painful and threatening to the child than "test" such as voiding cystourethrograms (VCUGs). However, clinical experience indicates that the VCUG is often perceived by children as more highly distressing than other procedures. Success and a sense of competence (or shame and doubt) in mastering challenging life experiences, such as medical procedures, contribute to a child's evolving self-c

[Theories of nursing professionals about the elderly].

Our study emphasizes the implicit theories of nursing professionals about the elderly and their influence on nursing behavior styles. According to our central hypothesis we expected a correlation between the differentiation of attitudes towards the elderly and the quality of nursing interventions. By means of a new methodological approach based on Forgas' theory of "social episodes" we investigated attitudes towards the elderly and behavior intentions in specific nursing situations. The sample consists of 133 professionals working in nursing homes for the elderly or in home care services. In a

Patient characteristics and variability in adherence and competence in cognitive-behavioral therapy for panic disorder.

UNLABELLED: Although associations with outcome have been inconsistent, therapist adherence and competence continues to garner attention, particularly within the context of increasing interest in the dissemination, implementation, and sustainability of evidence-based treatments. To date, research on therapist adherence and competence has focused on average levels across therapists. With a few exceptions, research has failed to address multiple sources of variability in adherence and competence, identify important factors that might account for variability, or take these sources of variability i

From idealistic helper to enterprising learner: critical reflections on personal development through experiences from Afghanistan.

There is little written about the cultural, social, and ethical challenges encountered by physiotherapists engaging in development work. This article takes a critical perspective on what it means to engage in development work as an expatriate physiotherapist, through a self-critical reflection on experiences from Afghanistan. The field notes from an ethnographic study of a development project conducted in Afghanistan were analysed to explore the transformative process of personal and professional development of the development worker. The critical reflective process entailed a change in meanin

Bridging the gap in Long COVID care: identifying core competencies for primary care curriculum development and evaluation.

BACKGROUND: There is an unmet need for Long COVID care within our healthcare system. Primary care clinicians (PCPs) face challenges in providing effective care due to limited relevant Long COVID training and lack of standardized clinical resources. Pre-CME (continuing medical education) survey data indicates that 62% of clinicians experience difficulty diagnosing and managing Long COVID. There is a need for competency-based curricula to equip PCPs with tools for interdisciplinary, patient-centered care. METHODS: A mixed-methods Delphi needs assessment process was designed to gather stakeholde

Automatic metrics from a new colon phantom can ensure basic competency in colonoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most diagnosed malignancy and the second leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. As global screening programs expand, there is an increasing need for validated tools that ensure colonoscopy competence before trainees perform procedures on patients. This study examined validity evidence for a simulation-based colonoscopy test using a novel colon phantom with automated performance metrics. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, 42 participants from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden were categorized as novice (0 procedures), intermed

RESEARCH PURPOSE: Based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this study systematically examines the effectiveness of Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) curriculum from the perspective of student satisfaction. By mapping six course design attributes to three basic psychological needs, the study constructs a theoretical framework to explain satisfaction with PETE curriculum. Implementation of self-directed learning within clinical clerkships.

Background: The main aim of medical curricula is to prepare students for the first day at the work place. While teaching clinical competence is pivotal, clinical clerkships are often the last chance to close knowledge gaps with the help of clinical teachers. Self-directed learning is a dynamic field for research within medical education, though its curricular implementation is rare. This study focuses on the needs assessment of clinical clerkships using the concept of self-directed learning. Methods: The study comprised an educational experience at the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität (LMU) Muni

[Reference care plans and clinical pathways, from standardisation to personalisation].

The reference care plan and clinical pathway are complementary tools. Their implementation, once the method is acquired, is a real scientific approach. It formalises a clinical reasoning shared between the professionals involved in the patient's care. These tools are quality reference guides which give meaning to the caregiving activity. They help to consolidate competencies. This approach guides the clinical judgement and reasoning of caregivers. It is a health care decision support tool. This collective work is the result of reflective practice and is built on experiential knowledge.

Constructing maternal-child learning experiences using clinical simulations.

Clinical simulations are gaining more attention in the field of maternal-child health and allow nursing programs and service organizations to assess competency of students and staff in key patient safety situations. Nursing and midwifery programs, orientations, and yearly reaccreditation modules commonly include simulation on postpartum hemorrhage, placenta abruption, shoulder distocia, and other high-risk, low-incidence emergency events. This article describes the use of simulations by educators and managers as teaching or professional development strategies.

Medicine dispensation in the prison system: Is pharmaceutical care assured?

This paper aims to analyze the process of medicine dispensation in prisons. A qualitative study was conducted in seven penitentiaries in Paraíba with 13 health professionals and 43 people deprived of liberty using essential/strategic medicines from February to August 2016. The results were categorized from the perspective of Bardin's content analysis. Three categories emerged: medicine storage location in the prison system, delivery process in the prison system, and health-related responsibilities with pharmaceutical care. We can conclude that the lack of pharmacies, the legal non-compliance r

Specific learning disability.

Specific learning disabilities (SLD) have an impact on discrete areas of academic function. They result in a level of difficulty that is unexpected when considered in the context of a student's overall intellectual and academic competence. A common example is dyslexia, an SLD that affects the acquisition of literacy. Medical professionals have an important role to play in the evaluation and management of SLD. The medical role is founded on the fact that these conditions are biologically based and have the potential to cause significant harm for the developing child. Even if details of biologic

The national jockey injury study: an analysis of injuries to professional horse-racing jockeys.

While there have been numerous reports in the literature of accidents in equestrian sports, no comprehensive study has been conducted to ascertain the nature and incidence of injuries incurred by professional horse-racing jockeys. A survey was conducted to determine the types of injuries to jockeys and racing-related health concerns, including weight reduction methods. The questionnaire was completed by 706 professional jockeys actively competing at United States racetracks between July and October 1990 about injuries they had sustained in their careers. More than 1,700 injuries were reported.
