68 Ga-Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen PET/CT in Ovarian Tumors : Potential to Differentiate Benign and Malignant Tumors Before Surgery: A Preliminary Report.

PURPOSE OF THE REPORT: Ovarian cancer is usually diagnosed in an advanced stage of disease due to the absence of specific symptoms and a lack of sensitive diagnostic methods. Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is expressed on prostate cancer cells but can be found in other tumors such as ovarian cancer. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility of using 68 Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT in detection of ovarian neoplasm before surgical treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eight women with mean age of 56.0 ± 16.2 years were included in the study. All patients underwent transvaginal ultra

Application of 18F Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography in Monitoring Gastric Metastasis and Cancer Thrombi from Renal Cell Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) with gastric metastasis is rare, particularly accompanied by multiple cancer thrombi. METHODS: We reported a 66-year-old man with a history of a right radical nephrectomy because of RCC. The patient underwent 18F prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scanning after 6 months of targeted therapy because of gastric metastasis and cancer thrombi. We conducted a systematic review of the literature and identified 73 cases of RCC with gastric metastasis. We analyzed the clinicopathological characteri

Deep Membrane Proteome Profiling Reveals Overexpression of Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen (PSMA) in High-Risk Human Paraganglioma and Pheochromocytoma, Suggesting New Theranostic Opportunity.

Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) are rare neuroendocrine tumors arising from chromaffin cells of adrenal medulla or sympathetic or parasympathetic paraganglia, respectively. To identify new therapeutic targets, we performed a detailed membrane-focused proteomic analysis of five human paraganglioma (PGL) samples. Using the Pitchfork strategy, which combines specific enrichments of glycopeptides, hydrophobic transmembrane segments, and non-glycosylated extra-membrane peptides, we identified over 1800 integral membrane proteins (IMPs). We found 45 "tumor enriched" proteins, i.e., prot

Using reduced graphene oxide-Ca:CdSe nanocomposite to enhance photoelectrochemical activity of gold nanoparticles functionalized tungsten oxide for highly sensitive prostate specific antigen detection.

An ultrasensitive sandwich-type photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor was constructed for the detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA). In this work, Au-nanoparticle-loaded tungsten oxide (WO3-Au) hybrid composites was applied as PEC sensing platform, while Ca ions doped CdSe equipped on the conducting framework of reduced graphene oxide (rGO-Ca:CdSe) nanocomposites were employed as the signal amplification probe. As for WO3-Au, massive Au nanoparticles were formed on the surface of WO3 without any additional reducing agent, providing a novel nanocarriers for anchoring plenty of the prim

The effect of antibiotics on elevated serum prostate specific antigen in patients with urinary symptoms and negative digital rectal examination: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: 65-70% of patients with abnormal prostate specific antigen (PSA) do not have cancer on prostate needle biopsy. Prostate biopsy is a potentially morbid procedure. Prostatitis is commonly reported on needle biopsies. To cut down on the number of unnecessary prostate biopsies we evaluated the effect of antibiotic on PSA level in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), normal digital rectal examination (DRE), normal urinalysis and elevated PSA. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 48 selected patients with LUTS, normal DRE, normal urinalysis and elevated PSA (range 5.0-28

The cutoff level of free/total prostate specific antigen (f/t PSA) ratios in the diagnosis of prostate cancer: a validation study on a Turkish patient population in different age categories.

We investigated an optimal cutoff level of free/total PSA ratios (f/t PSA) in predicting prostate cancer in different age groups, focusing on the avoidance of unnecessary prostate biopsies. A total of 4955 men were enrolled into the study. Serum tPSA, fPSA, and f/t PSA ratios were determined for the study population. All males who had suspicious digital rectal examination and tPSA > 4 ng/mL underwent transrectal ultrasonography-guided prostate biopsy. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for each group were generated by plotting the sensitivity versus 1-specificity for the f/t PSA ra

Prostate-specific antigen in the cerebrospinal fluid leads to diagnosis of solitary cauda equina metastasis: a unique case report and review of the literature.

A 79-year-old male patient presented with a subacute cauda syndrome caused by an intradural metastasis of the lumbosacral caudate fibres from an adenocarcinoma of the prostate, which had been treated 5 years earlier with external beam radiation therapy. Diagnosis could not be established by repeated magnetic resonance images (MRIs) during a 2-year period of increasingly severe radicular pain. Eventually, a small tumour mass could be visualized on the fourth MRI. Repeated normal serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) did not hint at a prostate cancer metastasis (range 2.4-5.1 ng ml(-1)); however…

Utility of prostate-specific antigen density and its correlation with Gleason grade groups: a hospital-based cross-sectional study among patients with prostate-related urinary symptoms at Bugando Medical Centre, Mwanza, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: At Bugando Medical Centre, prostate cancer contributes to 39% of all cancers in male patients admitted to the Oncology department, and the majority have high Gleason grades. Although Prostate-specific antigen density (PSAD) has been shown to improve the diagnostic accuracy of prostate cancer and to triage patients for prostate biopsy, there is a significant variation across geographical locations. METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study among patients with prostate-related urinary symptoms at Bugando Medical Centre, Mwanza, Tanzania. The study analyzed prostate-specific ant…

Extending Current Guideline-recommended Prostate-specific Antigen Density Thresholds for Improving Benefit/Harm Balance in Risk-based Magnetic Resonance Imaging-directed Prostate Cancer Diagnosis, from the Community-based Multicentre MR-PROPER Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: International guidelines recommend a risk-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-directed diagnostic pathway in prostate cancer (PCa) suspected biopsy-naïve men to reduce overdiagnosis. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) density has been suggested as a stratification tool for MRI or biopsy testing. This study aims to investigate the risk-based MRI-directed pathway with PSA density thresholds indicating MRI and/or targeted biopsy in PCa suspected men, reducing safely unproductive interventions. METHODS: A post hoc analysis was conducted in the MRI arm of the prospective …
