Impact of psychopathology on day-to-day living in patients with schizophrenia: A network analysis.

Although the relationship between schizophrenia and disability is well established, the association between the symptoms of the disorder and functional domains remains unclear. The current study explored the nuances of the relationship between symptoms and domains of functioning in a sample of 1127 patients with schizophrenia. We assessed the symptoms of schizophrenia with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and psychosocial functioning with the mini-ICF-APP (mini-International Classification of Functioning Rating for Limitations of Activities and Participation in Psychological Di…

Depression Severity and Coping Styles as Independent Predictors of Functioning in Male Adults With Adjustment Disorder.

Adjustment disorder (AD) is characterized by disproportionate emotional and behavioural responses to stressors, often leading to significant functional impairment; however, the psychological mechanisms underlying this impairment remain underexplored. This cross-sectional study examined the effects of coping skills and metacognitive beliefs on psychosocial functioning in 83 young male patients (aged 19-30 years) diagnosed with AD according to DSM-5 criteria. Participants completed the Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CSQ), Metacognitions Questionnaire (MCQ-30), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) a…

Personality characteristics of patients with resistant burning mouth syndrome.

The personality characteristics in 32 patients with resistant burning mouth syndrome (BMS) after treatment of diagnosed medical and odontologic diseases were examined and compared with a sex- and age-matched control group. After evaluation of burning mouth symptoms, the personality, the psychologic functioning, and the quality of life were determined by using the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP), an additional Personality Scale (PS), a Psychological Functioning Scale (PFS), and a Quality of Life Scale (QLS). The result showed that, compared with a control group, the patients with resista

Psychosocial factors associated with the risk of developing psychosis in a Mexican general population sample.

Epidemiological evidence has linked an array of sociodemographic and psychosocial factors with an increased risk of developing psychosis. However, research in samples from low- and middle-income countries is still scarce. This study used a Mexican sample to explore (i) sociodemographic and psychosocial differences between individuals with and without a positive screen for Clinical High-Risk for psychosis (CHR), and (ii) sociodemographic and psychosocial factors associated with screening positive for CHR. The sample consisted of 822 individuals from the general population who completed an onlin

Microbial leakage of MTA, Portland cement, Sealapex and zinc oxide-eugenol as root-end filling materials.

Dysthymic disorder is a chronic depressive condition occurring in 0.6-4.6% of children and 1.6-8.0% of adolescents. Although symptoms are less severe than those observed in major depression, childhood-onset dysthymic disorder is characterised by a persistent and long-term depressed or irritable mood (mean episode duration 3-4 years), a worse outcome than major depression and, frequently, comorbid disorders (in around 50% of patients). Long-lasting depressive symptoms seem responsible for long-term disabling consequences on social skill learning, psychosocial functioning and consequent professi…

Health-related Quality of Life in children and adolescents treated for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), compared with healthy peers: a longitudinal study of early survivorship.

PURPOSE: Survival for childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) has surpassed 90%, making quality of survival an important endpoint in treatment outcomes. This study examined health-related quality of life (HRQoL) trajectories in early survivorship for patients post-ALL treatment compared with a matched group of healthy peers, and explored the association of individual factors (age, sex) and treatment intensity with HRQoL outcomes. METHODS: Eighty-three paediatric patients aged 4-16 years who recently completed treatment for ALL were recruited to the study, alongside 53 age- and sex-match

Recovery among sexual minorities in the united states population: Prevalence, characteristics, quality of life and functioning compared with heterosexual majority.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals ("sexual minorities" [SMs]) are overrepresented among individuals suffering from alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems. However, little is known regarding differences, particularly in functioning and well-being, between SMs and heterosexuals in recovery from AOD problems. METHOD: Cross-sectional, nationally representative sample of US adults who resolved an AOD problem (N = 2002; National Recovery Study [Kelly et al., 2017]). Univariate analyses tested for differences between SMs and heterosexuals on socio-demographic, AOD use/treatment and c

Knowledge of Mental Illness and Its Associations Among Caregivers of Patients With Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness that greatly impacts the real-world functioning of patients. In India, caregivers are primarily responsible for their patients and function as their support system, often taking treatment decisions on their behalf. However, they may have insufficient knowledge of the illness, which can have a negative impact on their roles as effective caregivers. The knowledge of schizophrenia and its associations among caregivers has received very little research attention. AIM: To examine the knowledge of mental illness and its socio-demographic and psyc

Methadone maintenance treatment. When and how to refer patients.

Methadone, a long-acting oral narcotic analgesic, prevents withdrawal symptoms and craving over a 24-hour period in patients addicted to narcotics. Methadone maintenance treatment programs have been shown to decrease criminal behavior, improve psychosocial functioning, and decrease injecting narcotic use, thus reducing the spread of AIDS. For primary care physicians, knowing when and how to refer a patient to methadone maintenance treatment, as well as ensuring ongoing liaison with the treatment program, can help improve the quality and continuity of care for addicted patients.

Life events and physical illness.

This paper reviews research on the role of stressful life events in the aetiology of physical illness. Particular attention is given to the methodological problems involved in the identification and measurement of life events. There has been insufficient sound research for firm conclusions to be drawn but prospective studies make it clear that assessment of life events will lead to a more complete understanding of how psychosocial factors interact with bodily functioning. Future research studies will need to be based on an interactional model.

Clitoral reconstructive surgery in vulvar cancer patients: a qualitative study about motives, experiences, and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Vulvar cancer involving the clitoral region often requires radical excision, including (partial) resection of the clitoris, which can impair quality of life and sexual function, and although reconstructive flap surgery has long been used in patients with vulvar carcinoma to restore anatomy and overall function, clitoral-specific reconstructive procedures remain poorly described. AIM: To evaluate patient motives, experiences, and outcomes following clitoral reconstruction in women with vulvar cancer. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with vulvar cancer patients wh

Characterization of chronic overlapping pain conditions in patients with chronic migraine: A CHOIR study.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic overlapping pain conditions (COPCs) represent a co-aggregation of widespread pain disorders. We characterized differences in physical and psychosocial functioning in patients with chronic migraine (CM) and those with CM and COPCs. BACKGROUND: Patients with CM and COPCs have been identified as a distinct subgroup of patients with CM, and these patients may be vulnerable to greater symptom severity and burden. METHODS: Data were extracted from Collaborative Health Outcomes Information Registry (an open-source learning health-care system), completed at the patients' first vis…

Performance-based versus patient-reported physical function: what are the underlying predictors?

BACKGROUND: Functional limitations have been operationally defined for studies of rehabilitation science through measures of physical performance and patient-reported function. Although conceived as representing similar concepts, differences between these 2 modes of measuring physical functioning have not been adequately characterized scientifically. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) with the function component of the Late-Life Function and Disability Instrument (LLFDI) with respect to their association with physiologic factors a

Psychosocial factors and reading difficulties: students with reading difficulties drawn from a representative population sample.

In a representative sample of 2,464 Norwegian adolescents, aged 12-15 years, 7.8% (n= 191) reported reading difficulties (RD). No gender difference was found. Adolescents with RD were compared to classmates on psychosocial variables. In univariate analysis, RD adolescents report higher levels of depressive symptoms, more school stress, worried more about going to school, had lower school grades and lower attachment to parents than those without RD. They also scored lower on Global Self-worth and on Social Acceptance scales. Further, they reported reduced levels of psycho-functioning during the

Mutual influences on maternal depression and child adjustment problems.

Often undetected and poorly managed, maternal depression and child adjustment problems are common health problems and impose significant burden to society. Studies show evidence of mutual influences on maternal and child functioning, whereby depression in mothers increases risk of emotional and behavioral problems in children and vice versa. Biological mechanisms (genetics, in utero environment) mediate influences from mother to child, while psychosocial (attachment, child discipline, modeling, family functioning) and social capital (social resources, social support) mechanisms mediate transac

Older adult treatment outcome following elder-specific inpatient alcoholism treatment.

This study examined multidimensional 6-month outcomes of elder-specific inpatient alcoholism treatment for 90 participants over the age of 55. At baseline, physical health functioning was similar to that reported by seriously medically ill inpatients in other studies while psychosocial functioning was worse, and nearly one third of the sample had comorbid psychiatric disorders. Based on 6-month outcomes, participants were classified into the following groups: Abstainers, Non-Binge Drinkers, and Binge Drinkers. The groups did not differ on any baseline measures (demographics, drinking history, …
