Warming exacerbates the impacts of ultraviolet radiation in temperate diatoms but alleviates the effect on polar species.

Under global change scenarios, the sea surface temperature is increasing steadily along with other changes to oceanic environments. Consequently, marine diatoms are influenced by multiple ocean global change drivers. We hypothesized that temperature rise mediates the responses of polar and temperate diatoms to UV radiation (UVR) to different extents, and exposed the temperate centric diatoms, Thalassiosira weissflogii and Skeletonema costatum, and a polar pennate diatom Entomoneis sp., to warming (+5°C) for 10 days, then performed short-term incubations under different radiation treatments wit

Effectiveness of natural-based products for radiation-induced oral mucositis therapy: A systematic review.

Radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) is one of the common toxic reactions from ionizing radiation and normal tissue injuries as a complication of radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Radiation therapy is an option for the treatment of head and neck cancer (HNC). The use of natural products is an alternative therapy for RIOM. This review aimed to describe the effectiveness of natural-based products (NBPs) in reducing the severity, pain score, incidence, oral lesion size, and other symptoms such as dysphagia, dysarthria, and odynophagia. This systematic review follows the Preferred Reporting I

Treatment of protoscoleces with gamma radiation: Potential immunoprotective effect against experimental murine echinococcosis.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is one of the most important zoonotic diseases with a worldwide distribution. It is caused by the larval stage of the dog tapeworm "Echinococcus granulosussensu lato" and constitutes a major economic and public health problem in several countries. Protoscoleces are one component of this larval stage that can interact with both definitive and intermediate hosts. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential role of using a radio-attenuated form of these protoscoleces for immunoprophylaxis against experimental murine echinococcosis. However, mice were i

Evaluation of the Effects of Gamma Radiation Sterilization on Rhein-Loaded Biodegradable Microparticles for the Treatment of Osteoarthritis.

In previous work, we reported on the design of biodegradable rhein-loaded PLGA microparticles for the treatment of osteoarthritis. Considering that a formulation designed for intra-articular administration must meet sterility requirements to guarantee its safety, in this study the effect of gamma radiation sterilization on these microparticles was evaluated. The size, morphology, and surface characteristics of the microparticles and the encapsulation efficiency of rhein were not affected by the sterilization process. Although DSC and PXRD analyses suggested otherwise, rhein release profiles we

Stem Cell Migration: A Possible Mechanism for the Tissue-Sparing Effect of Spatially Fractionated Radiation.

Stem cell responses in tissues after exposure to radiation are of significance for maintaining tissue functions. From the point of view of stem cell characteristics, this article seeks to illustrate some contributions of microbeam research to spatially fractionated radiotherapy (SFRT), such as grid radiotherapy and microbeam radiotherapy. Although the tissue-sparing response after SFRT was first reported more than a century ago, current radiation dose-volume metrics are still unable to accurately predict such tissue-level changes in response to spatially fractionated radiation fields. However,

Variation in tube voltage for pediatric neck 64VCT: Effect on radiation dose and image quality.

Exposure to ionizing radiation can cause cancer, especially in children. In computed tomography (CT), a trade-off exists between the radiation dose and image quality. Few studies have investigated the effect of dose reduction on image quality in pediatric neck CT. We aimed to assess the effect of peak kilovoltage on the radiation dose and image quality in pediatric neck multidetector-row CT. Measurements were made using three phantoms representative of children aged 1, 5, and 10 years, with tube voltages of 80, 100, and 120 kilovoltage peak (kVp); tube current of 10, 40, 80, 120, 150, 200, and

Delivered dose-effect analysis of radiation induced rib fractures after thoracic SBRT.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Anatomical changes during the stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) of early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) may cause the delivered dose to deviate from the planned dose. We investigate if normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) models based on the delivered dose predict radiation-induced rib fractures better than models based on the planned dose. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 437 NSCLC patients treated to a median dose of 3x18 Gy were included. Delivered dose was estimated by accumulating EQD2-corrected fraction doses after being deformed with daily CBCT-

The Contribution of In Vivo Mammalian Studies to the Knowledge of Adverse Effects of Radiofrequency Radiation on Human Health.

The proliferation of cellular antennas and other radiofrequency radiation (RFR) generating devices of the last decades has led to more and more concerns about the potential health effects from RFR exposure. Since the 2011 classification as a possible carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), more experimental studies have been published that support a causal association between RFR exposure and health hazards. As regard cancer risk, two long-term experimental studies have been recently published by the US National Toxicology Program (NTP) and the Italian Ramazzini I

Photobiomodulation Enhances the Angiogenic Effect of Mesenchymal Stem Cells to Mitigate Radiation-Induced Enteropathy.

Radiation-induced enteropathy remains a major complication after accidental or therapeutic exposure to ionizing radiation. Recent evidence suggests that intestinal microvascular damage significantly affects the development of radiation enteropathy. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy is a promising tool to regenerate various tissues, including skin and intestine. Further, photobiomodulation (PBM), or low-level light therapy, can accelerate wound healing, especially by stimulating angiogenesis, and stem cells are particularly susceptible to PBM. Here, we explored the effect of PBM on the therap

Radiation-Induced Dual Oxidase Upregulation in Rat Heart Tissues: Protective Effect of Melatonin.

Background: Radiation-induced heart injury can lead to increased risk of heart failure, attack, and ischemia. Some studies proposed IL-4 and IL-13 as two important cytokines that are involved in late effects of ionizing radiation. On the other hand, these cytokines may, through upregulation of Duox1 and Duox2, induce chronic oxidative stress, inflammation, and fibrosis. In this study, we evaluated the upregulation of Duox1 and Duox2 pathways in hearts following chest irradiation in rats and then detected possible attenuation of them by melatonin. Materials and Methods: Twenty male Wistar rats

Predictors of the therapeutic effect of corticosteroids on radiation-induced optic neuropathy following nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Radiation-induced optic neuropathy (RION) is a severe visual complication resulting from radiotherapy of the head and neck, which mostly occurs in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in the southern part of China. The mechanism of RION is unclear. Therefore, identifying risk factors for RION is an important step towards enhancing our understanding. In the current study, we retrospectively reviewed patients with NPC who were admitted to Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital for visual loss between 2006 and 2017. The study included 38 participants (68 eyes) in the corticosteroid-effective group
