The impact of ionizing radiation on placental trophoblasts.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to low-dose radiation is widespread and attributable to natural sources. However, occupational, medical, accidental, and terrorist-related exposures remain a significant threat. Information on radiation injury to the feto-placental unit is scant and largely observational. We hypothesized that radiation causes trophoblast injury, and alters the expression of injury-related transcripts in vitro or in vivo, thus affecting fetal growth. METHODS: Primary human trophoblasts (PHTs), BeWo or NCCIT cells were irradiated in vitro, and cell number and viability were determined. Pr

ALARA+: Summit on Radiation and Orthopedic Risks in Fluoroscopic Laboratories.

Occupational radiation exposure has a clear association with long-term health effects and has a particular impact on women, trainees, and supporting staff. There is a reliance on limited, traditional radiation protection and nonergonomic equipment, which carries associated orthopedic injury rates with adverse impacts on both individual career trajectories and health systems, and with significant challenges to widespread implementation of enhanced radiation protection devices. Usefulness of an additional lead shielding device in reducing occupational radiation exposure during interventional endoscopic procedures: An observational study.

Adoption of interventional endoscopic procedures is increasing with increasing prevalence of diseases. However, medical radiation exposure is concerning; therefore, radiation protection for medical staff is important. However, there is limited information on the usefulness of an additional lead shielding device during interventional endoscopic procedures. Therefore, we aimed to determine whether an additional lead shielding device protects medical staff from radiation. An X-ray unit (CUREVISTA; Hitachi Medical Systems, Tokyo, Japan) with an over-couch X-ray system was used. Fluoroscopy-associat

APPLICATION OF REFLECTANCE CONFOCAL MICROSCOPY FOR EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF RADIATION-INDUCED ACUTE DERMATITIS IN RADIOSENSITIVE PATIENT: CASE STUDY.

According to the guidelines on cancer treatment up to 52% of newly diagnosed cancer patients should be treated with external beam radiotherapy. Ionizing radiation (IR)-induced skin injury (radiation dermatitis) occurs in up to 95% of radiotherapy patients and can manifest from mild erythema till necrosis and ulceration. Individual radiosensitivity was proposed to be an important factor for the development of adverse reactions to IR. Therefore, assessment of radiosensitivity could be useful in predicting and dealing with radiation injuries caused by both radiotherapy and accidental overexposure…

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound of blunt abdominal trauma in children.

Trauma is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children, and rapid identification of organ injury is essential for successful treatment. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is an appealing alternative to contrast-enhanced CT in the evaluation of children with blunt abdominal trauma, mainly with respect to the potential reduction of population-level exposure to ionizing radiation. This is particularly important in children, who are more vulnerable to the hazards of ionizing radiation than adults. CEUS is useful in hemodynamically stable children with isolated blunt low- to moderate-e

The imaging of paediatric thoracic trauma.

Major chest trauma in a child is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. It is most frequently encountered within the context of multisystem injury following high-energy trauma such as a motor vehicle accident. The anatomic-physiologic make-up of children is such that the pattern of ensuing injuries differs from that in their adult counterparts. Pulmonary contusion, pneumothorax, haemothorax and rib fractures are most commonly encountered. Although clinically more serious and potentially life threatening, tracheobronchial tear, aortic rupture and cardiac injuries are seldom observ

Oral PEG 15-20 protects the intestine against radiation: role of lipid rafts.

Intestinal injury following abdominal radiation therapy or accidental exposure remains a significant clinical problem that can result in varying degrees of mucosal destruction such as ulceration, vascular sclerosis, intestinal wall fibrosis, loss of barrier function, and even lethal gut-derived sepsis. We determined the ability of a high-molecular-weight polyethylene glycol-based copolymer, PEG 15-20, to protect the intestine against the early and late effects of radiation in mice and rats and to determine its mechanism of action by examining cultured rat intestinal epithelia. Rats were expose

Effects of single dose irradiation on pancreatic beta-cell function.

We have irradiated abdominal cavity of 23 rats with 10 Gy irradiation-induced hypoglycemia on the fourth day after intervention. Islets collected at this time showed an impaired insulin secretion without affecting insulin content. This impairment persisted after one month follow-up with reduced number of beta-cells in morphological examination.

[Exposure to ionizing radiation: radiobiological effects and pathogenesis. 1].

The present paper describes the radiobiological effects induced by an exposure to ionizing radiation and their pathogenesis. The different skin reactions are described in detail because of their importance and frequency. Thus the acute skin lesions after high doses and the late effects resulting, either from high doses, or from accumulation of chronic irradiation, are studied. The main early syndromes are then characterized: neurological, gastro-intestinal, bone-marrow and prodromic. As far as the complex problem of radiocarcinogenesis is concerned, the main results derived from studies by int

Radiation detriment: its quantification and use in setting standards.

At the end of 1990 the International Commission on Radiological Protection adopted new recommendations for the control of exposure to ionizing radiation. The main reasons for the revision of existing standards were first, the new estimates of the risks associated with exposure and second, the need to develop a conceptual framework that covered not only occupational exposures but also radon in homes and the consequences of accidents. This paper addresses these issues and shows how the definition of radiation detriment is used to set new standards in a System of Radiological Protection.

Taurine Deficiency in Tissues Aggravates Radiation-Induced Gastrointestinal Syndrome.

Ionizing radiation administered for cancer treatment or from nuclear plant accidents are two common causes of radiation exposure. Ionizing radiation exposure generates reactive oxygen species and free radicals, which cause oxidative stress. We previously reported that taurine contributes to the recovery from radiation-induced injuries, suggesting its potential as a radioprotector and radiation mitigator. However, the effect of taurine on radiation-induced gastrointestinal syndrome remains poorly understood. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of taurine tissue depletion on radiatio

[The complications of radiotherapy for breast cancer and the treatment for radiation ulcer].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effective treatment for chronic ulcer following radiotherapy for breast cancer and reveal the universality and severity of radiation-induced brachial plexus neuropathy. METHODS: The TRAM flap, the local expanded flap or the delayed skin flap were applied to repair the ulcer wounds in 16 patients. Electromyogram examinations were used to evaluate the radiation lesions of the brachial plexus. RESULTS: All the flaps survived successfully with satisfactory results except one, which sustained partial necrosis due to infection. Ten patients underwent regular electromyogra

Immediate medical consequences of nuclear accidents. Lessons from Chernobyl.

The immediate medical response to the nuclear accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power station involved containment of the radioactivity and evacuation of the nearby population. The next step consisted of assessment of the radiation dose received by individuals, based on biological dosimetry, and treatment of those exposed. Medical care involved treatment of skin burns; measures to support bone marrow failure, gastrointestinal tract injury, and other organ damage (ie, infection prophylaxis and transfusions) for those with lower radiation dose exposure; and bone marrow transplantation for those
