Nuclear oncopolitics: Surveilling and decommissioning radioactive sources in Ethiopia.

This article examines the Office of Radiological Security (ORS), a U.S. non-proliferation initiative designed to secure high-risk radiological sources in medical, industrial, and research settings, and its implementation in Ethiopia. Drawing on multi-sited ethnographic research conducted between August 2022 and November 2025, I detail the suspicions and resistance the program provoked among Ethiopian actors. While the case adds new perspectives to literature interrogating nuclear politics and speaks to a growing body of literature on power and inequality in global cancer care, my overall aim i

From fragmentation to integration: building a globally harmonised biodosimetry framework for radiological emergency preparedness.

Escalating geopolitical instability and the persistent risk of radiological or nuclear incidents highlight an urgent need for resilient global radiation emergency preparedness. In such crises, rapid and reliable biological dose assessment is indispensable for triage, therapeutic stratification, and long-term health surveillance. While the dicentric chromosome assay remains the gold standard for biodosimetry, its labour-intensive nature, limited throughput, and variability in implementation constrain large-scale responsiveness. Emerging approaches, including DNA-DSB repair foci analysis and G0-

Standardization of Dental Radiographic Techniques Using a Handheld X-Ray System in Rhesus Macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Dental radiology is a valuable diagnostic tool commonly used during comprehensive oral health assessments and treatments (COHAT) and oromaxillofacial surgical procedures in companion animals and humans. However, standardized techniques for dental radiography in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) remain underdeveloped. This study aimed to establish practical and reproducible methods for obtaining high-quality dental radiographs in rhesus macaques using the handheld X-ray system. Initially, anatomic landmarks, optimal X-ray beam, and sensor angles were determined using a preserved rhesus macaque s

Two Conventional Implants vs Four Mini Dental Implants to Retain Mandibular Overdentures: A Systematic Review of Clinical and Radiological Outcomes.

It is essential to compare conventional dental implants (CDIs) and mini dental implants (MDIs). This systematic review evaluates the clinical and radiological outcomes of individuals receiving MDI-retained overdentures (ODs) compared with CDI-retained ODs. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines were followed for the current systematic review. The PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane databases were examined for evidence-based research articles addressing the clinical and radiological outcomes of MDI and CDI published from January 2013 to September 2024. Core Decompression With Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate for Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head.

INTRODUCTION: Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head is a complex and debilitating condition that predominantly affects a relatively young population. Core decompression of the femoral head is the primary surgical option for joint preservation, most commonly used in the early stages. However, clinical and radiological outcomes are variable in the literature. Biological therapies, such as bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), have also been used as adjuvants to complement this procedure. This study aims to evaluate the outcomes of this surgical intervention. METHODS: From 2012 to 2022

A Revised System of Radiological Protection Is Needed.

The system of radiological protection has been based on linear no-threshold theory and related dose-response models for health detriment (in part related to cancer induction) by ionizing radiation exposure for almost 70 y. The indicated system unintentionally promotes radiation phobia, which has harmed many in relationship to the Fukushima nuclear accident evacuations and led to some abortions following the Chernobyl nuclear accident. Linear no-threshold model users (mainly epidemiologists) imply that they can reliably assess the cancer excess relative risk (likely none) associated with tens o

A renal aplasia case mimicking radiologically as unilateral renal agenesis in a child with spina bifida, atresia ani and unilateral undescended testis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: As a result of the failure of embryogenic kidney formation, a condition can occur where not a single kidney appears and this phenomenon is known as unilateral renal agenesis (URA). Both aplastic and dysplastic kidney are different from renal agenesis, atrophy and renal hypoplasia. However, from this case report it can be seen that there are similarities, both radiologically and macroscopically, between cases of unilateral renal aplasia and renal agenesis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 2 year old Javanese boy came to the health facility with complaints of recurrent fever and urinary tract s

Multinodular Vacuolating Neuronal Tumors: Symptomatic Presentation Versus Incidental Finding: Case Series and Literature Review.

Background: Multinodular Vacuolating Neuronal Tumors (MVNTs) are mixed glial-neuronal brain lesions classified as World Health Organization (WHO) CNS grade 1 tumors, often associated with long-term epilepsy. First described by Huse et al. in 2013 and included in the WHO CNS classification in 2016, MVNTs present a range of clinical manifestations, from symptomatic to asymptomatic. They typically affect young to middle-aged adults and exhibit diverse presentations. Radiologically, MVNTs are usually supratentorial, frequently located in the temporal lobe but also observed in the frontal and parie

Outcomes of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in patients with situs inversus viscerum.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Situs inversus viscerum (SIV) is a congenital condition defined by left-to-right transposition of all visceral organs. This anatomical variant has caused technical challenges in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Data on ERCP in patients with SIV are limited to case reports of unknown clinical and technical success rates. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and technical success rates of ERCP in patients with SIV. METHODS: Data from patients with SIV who underwent ERCP were retrospectively reviewed. The data were collected by querying the nationwide

A case report of persistent drug-sensitive pulmonary tuberculosis after treatment completion.

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) has been found to persist within cavities in patients who have completed their anti-tuberculosis therapy. The clinical implications of Mtb persistence after therapy include recurrence of disease and destructive changes within the lungs. Data on residual changes in patients who completed anti-tuberculosis therapy are scarce. This case highlights the radiological and pathological changes that persist after anti-tuberculosis therapy completion and the importance of achieving sterilization of cavities in order to prevent these changes. Repeatability of radiographic assessments for feline hip dysplasia suggest consensus scores in radiology are more uncertain than commonly assumed.

Variation in the diagnostic interpretation of radiographs is a well-recognised problem in human and veterinary medicine. One common solution is to create a 'consensus' score based on a majority or unanimous decision from multiple observers. While consensus approaches are generally assumed to improve diagnostic repeatability, the extent to which consensus scores are themselves repeatable has rarely been examined. Here we use repeated assessments by three radiologists of 196 hip radiographs from 98 cats within a health-screening programme to examine intra-observer, inter-observer, majority-conse

The first use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the ER: triage not diagnosis.

Predictions related to the impact of AI on radiology as a profession run the gamut from AI putting radiologists out of business to having no effect at all. The use of AI appears to show significant promise in ER triage in the present. We briefly discuss the emerging effectiveness of AI in the ER imaging setting by looking at some of the products approved by the FDA and finding their way into "practice." The FDA approval process to date has focused on applications that affect patient triage and not necessarily ones that have the computer serve as the only or final reader. We describe a select g

Predictive value of early MRI findings on neurocognitive and psychiatric outcomes in patients with severe traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the major public health problem worldwide, particularly in the Middle East. Diffuse axonal injury (DAI) is commonly found in TBI. Although DAI can lead to physical and psychosocial disabilities, its prognostic value is still a matter of debate. Magnetic Resonance (MR) is more sensitive for detecting DAI lesions. OBJECTIVE: To identify the radiological and clinical factors associated with the functional capacity one year after the traumatic brain injury. METHODS: The study included 251 patients with severe head trauma for whom Brain MRI was done wit

A review of radiation countermeasures focusing on injury-specific medicinals and regulatory approval status: part I. Radiation sub-syndromes, animal models and FDA-approved countermeasures.

PURPOSE: The increasing global risk of nuclear and radiological accidents or attacks has driven renewed research interest in developing medical countermeasures to potentially injurious exposures to acute irradiation. Clinical symptoms and signs of a developing acute radiation injury, i.e. the acute radiation syndrome, are grouped into three sub-syndromes named after the dominant organ system affected, namely the hematopoietic, gastrointestinal, and neurovascular systems. The availability of safe and effective countermeasures against the above threats currently represents a significant unmet me
