Lead administration (250, 500, 1000, and 2000 ppm, as lead acetate) in drinking water during fetal development (from 15 to 20 days of gestation), in normal and iron-deficient pregnant rats, revealed dose-dependent increases in the lead content of maternal blood that was more marked in iron-deficient animals. Dexamethasone-immunosuppressed rats infected with Cryptosporidium parvum were used to assess the macrolides azithromycin and spiramycin for anticryptosporidial activity. Azithromycin consistently prevented ileal infection, while spiramycin was ineffective. The anticryptosporidial activity of azithromycin was dose-related, 200 mg/kg/day being the minimum dose that prevented infection. Reductions in the concentration of retinol (vitamin A) in serum, lung and kidney were observed in rats subjected to inflammation-inducing treatments (turpentine oil injection of thermal injury). Colonic cancers were induced in rats by subcutaneous injection of 1,2-Dimethylhydrazine. Tumor growth patterns were estimated by means of a double contrast barium enema technique. Tumor growth was almost exponential and the average doubling time was 20 +/- 5 (m +/- S.D.) days, at which time three different types of tumor growth patterns: Constant type, decreasing type and reaccelerating type, were noted. Serial double contrast barium enema technique appeared to be an useful method of studying in vivo primary colonic cancer growth patterns in rats.

The effect of a high concentration (1%, w/w) of ascorbic acid in a Cu-adequate (150 mumol/kg) purified diet was studied in rats.
