Intravestibular intralabyrinthine schwannomas (ILSs) are uncommon benign tumors that arise from the saccular, utricular, and lateral and superior ampullary nerves. According to the literature, there is an average delay of 8 years between the onset of symptoms and diagnosis. The diagnosis is based on an audiovestibular examination and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We describe a case of intravestibular ILS in which we included the ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs) test in the diagnostic workup. The oVEMPs test is a relatively new neurophysiologic diagnostic modality that

Air flow larynx resistance changes have been recorded in dogs after electrical stimulation and lesion of the recurrent and vagus cervicalis nerves respectively. Experiments were carried out with glottis in situ and isolated. The effects of the administration of athropine i.v. (0.3 mg/kg) were also studied. Air flow larynx resistance decreased after secting the right recurrent nerves as well as after athropine administration. Electrical stimulation of the central end of the right vagus nerve produced a complex response characterized by an initial apnaea followed by a larynx resistance decrease.

PURPOSE: To report the case of a patient who presented with a peripapillary retinal detachment caused by pathological myopia.
OBSERVATIONS: A 73-year-old female with a clinical history of high myopia was admitted to our ophthalmic department complaining of vision loss in her right eye. Her best-corrected visual acuity was 20/25 in the right eye and 20/400 in the left eye. The refractive error was -9.00 D in both eyes. The anterior segment and pupillary reflex were normal. Dilated fundus examination revealed myopic retinopathy in both eyes and a yellow peripapillary lesion, distinct from the m

The authors report a case of macular involvement in a patient with HTLV-I associated myelopathy (HAM). The patient was a 10-year-old girl who noticed sudden decreased vision in her right eye in November 1987. The corrected visual acuity was 0.01 in the right eye and 1.0 in the left eye. Fundus examination of the right eye disclosed mild optic disc pallor. The macula appeared to have pigmentary mottling with superficial irregular retinal reflex that was three disc diameters in size. Fluorescein angiography revealed a discoid hypofluorescent area in the macula, surrounded by mottled hyperfluores

The resting and reflex-evoked activities of single postganglionic sympathetic neurons with axons in the right thoracic vagus were tested in chloralose-anaesthetized cats. The properties of a majority of neurons were found to be similar. Cardiac- and inspiration-related rhythmicities were present in the resting activity of sympathetic neurons. Their resting activity was not affected by hyperventilation which abolished phrenic nerve discharges. Systemic hypoxia (2 min; 8% O2 in N2) increased the activity of the neurons more effectively in the deafferented state than when both sinus nerves remain

BACKGROUND: Long-term segregation (LTS) is used in mental health hospitals in England to manage individuals perceived to pose a sustained risk of harm to others. Increasing evidence indicates that LTS causes significant psychological and physical harm and may breach international human rights standards. The HOPE(S) programme (2022-2025) was introduced nationally to reduce, and ultimately end, the use of LTS for autistic people, individuals with learning disabilities and children and young people.
AIMS: To explore the experiences of LTS from different perspectives and to examine its impact thr

Herpes zoster oticus is a viral disease caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus at the geniculate ganglion. The hallmark of the condition is multiple unilateral erythematous vesicles, which are distributed over the auricle and preceded by severe otalgia. If these symptoms are associated with facial nerve palsy, the condition is called Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) which is usually accompanied by vestibulocochlear abnormalities. A 42-year-old woman came to our clinic with sudden onset of right-sided severe otalgia and several erythematous vesicles on the auricle two days ago. She

RATIONALE: False localizing sign means that the lesion, which is the cause of the symptom, is remote or distant from the anatomical site predicted by neurological examination. This concept contradicts the classical clinicoanatomical correlation paradigm underlying neurological examinations.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 54-year-old man consulted for the right sciatica-like leg pain that had aggravated 1 year ago. Radiological examinations revealed degenerative spondylolisthesis with instability and right-sided recess stenosis at the L4-5 level. After initial improvement following 3 transforaminal epidu

Piriformis syndrome is a rare cause of hip and foot pain which may be due to sciatic nerve irritation because of anatomic abnormalities of sciatic nerve and piriformis muscle or herniated disc, facet syndrome, trochanteric bursit, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, endometriosis and other conditions where sciatic nerve is irritated. There has been no reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) case presented due to piriformis syndrome before. A sixty-two-year-old female patient had right foot and hip pain (VNS: 8), redness and swelling in the foot since 15 days. Her history revealed long walks and travellin

OBJECTIVE: To describe the neurobehavioral syndrome in two children with destruction of the right basal ganglia ostensibly from amniocentesis needle penetration at 17 weeks of gestation.
BACKGROUND: Early-life unilateral lesions of the basal ganglia are rare and the resulting syndrome not described.
METHODS: Both children had repeated clinical assessments, MRI and (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET scans, and psychometric and achievement testing over 10 years.
RESULTS: Right basal ganglia destruction was similar and virtually coextensive in both children; optic nerve and oculomotor dysfunction we

A 47-year-old man underwent slow pathway ablation for slow-fast atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia. Following the procedure, he felt palpitations while swallowing, and swallowing-induced atrial tachycardia was diagnosed. Swallowing-induced atrial tachycardia arose from the right atrium-superior vena cava junction and was cured by catheter ablation. After the procedure, the patient's heart rate variability changed significantly, indicating suppression of parasympathetic nerve activity. In this case, swallowing-induced atrial tachycardia was related to the vagal nerve reflex. Analysis

We report the case of a 5-year-old boy with multiple congenital anomalies, including ptosis, polydactyly, ventricular septal defect, epilepsy, and intellectual deficits. The patient presented with synkinetic eyelid movements accompanying jaw and ocular movements, including Marcus-Gunn phenomenon (eyelid elevation at mouth opening) in the right eye, inverse Marcus-Gunn phenomenon (aggravation of ptosis at mouth opening) in the left eye, and unilateral eyelid elevation on each side during ipsilateral abduction. This suggests that the different types of synkinesia may represent a common etiology

In this paper, I present a viewpoint about prevention and spina bifida that is not usually expressed within the occupational therapy literature. Using an autoethnographic account, I convey my experiences as a person with impairments from spina bifida in order to problematize current preventive efforts undertaken to eradicate this birth defect. This self-reflexive account connects my personal experiences to historical and medical views about spina bifida. The messages inherent in preventive efforts are discussed from a disability rights perspective. Occupational therapists are challenged to exa

BACKGROUND: Brain infarction secondary to stenosis of the posterior cerebral artery is uncommon. We report a patient with midbrain infarction and symptoms of both Benedikt's and pupil-sparing oculomotor palsy syndromes secondary to posterior cerebral artery stenosis.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 51-year-old woman developed diplopia, left ptosis, and right hemiataxia and hyperactive tendon reflexes. Pupils were equal and reactive. Radiological examination revealed stenosis of the posterior cerebral artery and left-sided midbrain infarct.
CONCLUSIONS: Stenosis of the posterior cerebral artery may cause

The article presents the results of neurophysiological examination of 32 patients with noninflammatory form of abacterial chronic prostatitis/ chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS III B). Intramuscular electromyography was performed, right and left bulbocavernous reflex and cortical somatosensory evoked potentials during stimulation of n. pudendus were evaluated. It is shown that there is a high frequency of abnormal neurophysiological patterns in the absence of clinical neurological disease in patients with CP/CPPS III B. In this case, the pain as the main symptom was not associated with pro

A 53-year-old Japanese woman presented with myoclonus during the course of Guillain-Barré syndrome. The myoclonus was characterized by relatively regular involuntary movements, starting from proximal muscles of the right lower leg, and moving almost simultaneously towards the left lower leg and upper trunk. Surface electromyography revealed rhythmic synchronous discharges with 100-200 ms duration in the agonist and antagonist muscles at approximately 4 Hz. The jerk-locked back averaging, long latency reflexes, and somatosensory evoked potentials studies were normal. We report myoclonus due to

Seizures induced by eating are generally considered rare. Eating epilepsy is a kind of reflex epilepsy. We report two patients aged 11 and 16, with seizures provoked by eating. The eating-provoked seizures in both patients were a series of tonic spasms. Both ictal EEGs showed a periodic pattern characterized by diffuse high voltage slow wave. These findings were consistent with periodic spasms described by Gobbi et al. The ECD were widely distributed in both patients, although that of Patient 1 was partially clustered in the right frontal region. This is the first report of patients with perio

Lesion of cranial nerves due to vascular damage at pontine level generally associates affectation of near nerve tracts. Isolated fifth nerve palsy due to vascular pontine lesions has been scarcely reported. We present a hypertense 57 year old woman who suffered from sudden paresthesias and hypoesthesia on the three divisions of trigeminal nerve without motor involvement and with preservation of corneal and masseter reflexes. Cranial magnetic resonance showed small dorsolateral pontine infarct over the right fifth cranial nerve entry. Isolated sensitive trigeminal neuropathy is a rare debut for

The effect on service provision of describing a variety of actions as challenging behaviour is discussed: it is suggested that studying stereotyped, aggressive and self-injurious acts in their own right has yielded more useful psychological debate, and ignoring such conceptual thinking leads to implicit theorizing where assumptions go unquestioned. Evidence for the relevance of staff actions on different topographies of client responses is critically reviewed, alongside discussion of the authors' rhetoric. The importance of adjusting language and frameworks to make room for alternative concept

4 fatal cases after tracheotomy and 35 cases after endotracheal anaesthesia were examined taking pathomorphological aspects into consideration. In long-period intubation mucous membrane necroses occurred as of the 4th day. After 6 days' intubation skeletizations of the tracheal rings were established in each case. Infections of the decubial ulcers and errosion haemorrhages from the necrotically altered tracheal wall were frequent complications. Faulty intubation of the oesophagus and the right bronchus, aspirations and reflex-related circulatory failure during intubation as well as hypoxic dam
