Predictors of Clinically Significant Outcome for Adolescents with Temporomandibular Disorders.

AIMS: To evaluate and identify baseline characteristics of the adolescent patients included in two previous randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that may predict a clinically significant outcome after treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) with an occlusal appliance (OA) or relaxation training (RT) in a clinical sample of adolescents. METHODS: This study combined two patient samples from the earlier RCTs for a total of 167 adolescents with frequent TMD pain (once a week or more often), diagnosed according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD. They were treated with OA, RT, or re

Does relaxation treatment have differential effects on migraine and tension-type headache in adolescents?

The present study evaluated the effects of relaxation treatment in 36 adolescents aged 13 to 18 years (mean +/- SD, 15.4 +/- 1.55 years) suffering from migraine or migraine and tension-type headache as compared with a waiting-list condition group. The subjects rated various characteristics of migraine and tension-type headache in a diary. Significant reductions were found for total headache sum (P <.05) and intensity scores of total headache activity (P <.05) as well as for migraine intensity (P <.05) for subjects treated with relaxation as compared with those in the waiting-list condition gro

[Drug therapy of ankylosing spondylitis].

Ankylosing spondylitis has to be treated with NSAID's in order to influence the inflammatory process and thus reducing pain and slowing down the stiffening of the vertebral column. For this purpose, apart from the NSAID's Sulphasalazine is used. As a symptomatic treatment of pain and muscle spasm simple analgesics and muscle relaxants can be used. In peripheral arthritis a local treatment with intraarticular steroids can be useful, and sometimes a radiosynoviorthesis can stop the inflammation for a longer period. In case of osteoporotic fractures prescription of calcitonin may be considered.

Long-term effects of a complex behavioral treatment of essential hypertension.

A multidimensional behavioral program was developed for the treatment of essential hypertension. Over a course of 6 weeks, 108 patients of a rehabilitation center were treated with this program consisting of health education, self-monitoring of blood pressure, relaxation techniques, and a social skill training in addition to standard medical treatment alone. Blood pressure and other cardiovascular risk factors were monitored for a period of 12 months. Blood pressure levels became normotensive in both groups at the end of the 6-week training program. However, the blood pressure reduction in the

Effects of four treatment methods on social phobic patients not suitable for insight-oriented psychotherapy.

Forty-two social phobic men and women, rated unsuitable for insight-oriented psychotherapy, received one of four randomly assigned types of treatment for 3 months. All patients received basal therapy (B) in the form of standardized information, self-exposure instructions, and anxiolytic medication. One group received this treatment only, with monthly appointments. The others, in addition, received either therapist-directed prolonged exposure in vivo, in some cases supplemented with exposure in imagination (PE), dynamically oriented supportive therapy (ST) or relaxation therapy (R). There was a…

Self-control, biofeedback, and change in 'psychosomatic' approach.

The new psychosomatic treatment modalities of biofeedback and relaxation techniques have in common an emphasis on self-control or self-regulation. The surging populatiry of the self-control techniques at present may reflect a change in the self-image of medicine, which emphasizes its role as a collaborator of the patient in his self-control of disease processes. Modern concept of psychosomatic medicine emphasizes a systems or field approach to evaluation and treatment rather than on 'psychogenic' causes of physical illness. The self-control treatment modalities form an important part of the ar

Personalised Approach to the Management of Older People with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus-A Comprehensive Narrative Review.

The global population is ageing due to increased life expectancy, and the prevalence of diabetes is proportionally increasing. With advancing age, diabetes in older people is a complex condition due to associated morbidities and geriatric syndromes. As a result, the management of diabetes in old age is challenging. Due to the wide heterogeneity of older people, diabetes management in this age group should be personalised. While strict targets are accepted in fit individuals, relaxed targets should be considered in patients with multiple morbidities and a high risk of hypoglycaemia. The develop

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation in Treatment of Occipital Neuralgia: A Case Report.

Occipital neuralgia is the third most common headache syndrome after migraine and tension type headaches. There is no well-established treatment regimen for a reliable cure. The current case presents a 39-year-old woman, diagnosed with occipital neuralgia of idiopathic cause. The condition was difficult to control by conservative or interventional approaches. The patient was started on conventional transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, 3 sessions per week. After the procedure, the patient achieved significant pain relief: 1-2/10 on the numeric rating scale, pain initially being 10/10. W

Teaching strategies for coping with stress--the perceptions of medical students.

BACKGROUND: The undergraduate medical course is a period full of stressors, which may contribute to the high prevalence of mental disorders among students and a decrease in life's quality. Research shows that interventions during an undergraduate course can reduce stress levels. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the Strategies for Coping with Professional Stress class offered to medical students of the Federal University of Goiás, at Goiânia, Goiás, in Brazil. METHODS: Qualitative research, developed with medical students in an elective class addressing strategies for coping with stress af

The Effect of Electromyographic Biofeedback Relaxation Training on Pain Catastrophizing and Fatigue Levels in Lung Cancer Patients Undergoing Combined Chemoradiotherapy.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Lung cancer patients undergoing combined chemoradiotherapy often experience pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and decreased quality of life. Among these, pain catastrophizing, as a negative cognitive pattern, can exacerbate symptom experience. Similarly, fatigue and sleep disturbances are also influenced by psychological and cognitive factors, yet conventional supportive care provides limited intervention at the psychological and cognitive levels. This study aims to investigate the impact of electromyographic biofeedback relaxation training on pain catastrophizing and fatigue

Impaired right and left ventricular function and relaxation induced by pulmonary regurgitation are not reversed by tardive antifibrosis treatment.

Pulmonary regurgitation (PR) after repair of tetralogy of Fallot (rTOF) is associated with progressive right (RV) and left (LV) ventricular dysfunction and fibrosis. However, angiotensin II receptor blockade therapy has shown mixed and often disappointing results. The aim of this study was to serially assess changes in biventricular remodeling, dysfunction, and interactions in a rat model of isolated severe PR and to study the effects of angiotensin II receptor blockade. PR was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats by leaflet laceration. Shams (n = 6) were compared with PR (n = 5) and PR + losartan t

Guided relaxation-based virtual reality versus distraction-based virtual reality or passive control for postoperative pain management in children and adolescents undergoing Nuss repair of pectus excavatum: protocol for a prospective, randomised, controlled trial (FOREVR Peds trial).

INTRODUCTION: Virtual reality (VR) offers an innovative method to deliver non-pharmacological pain management. Distraction-based VR (VR-D) using immersive games to redirect attention has shown short-term pain reductions in various settings. To create lasting pain reduction, VR-based strategies must go beyond distraction. Guided relaxation-based VR (VR-GR) integrates pain-relieving mind-body based guided relaxation with VR, a novel therapy delivery mechanism. The primary aim of this study is to assess the impact of daily VR-GR, VR-D and 360 video (passive control) on pain intensity. We will als

Immunoexpression of C4 Binding Protein in Oral Leukoplakia and Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Today there are approximately one million people with dementia in Germany. If current demographic trends continue, this number is likely to rise substantially in the coming years. In the older population, dementia is the most frequent reason for long-term care. Because most forms of dementia cannot be cured, the aim of treatment is to delay disease progression and to maintain functioning and quality of life. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: What is the evidence on different approaches to the long-term usual care of patients with dementia in terms of common endpoints such as quality of life,
