Down Syndrome in FPIES: An Overwhelming and Unexpected Prevalence.

Down syndrome (DS) is one of the most common chromosomal anomalies. Gastrointestinal disorders in DS are predominantly related to anatomical anomalies and celiac disease. In 2015, the first two cases of non-IgE-mediated food allergy in patients with DS were described. However, gastrointestinal symptoms experienced by subjects with DS have never been related to a possible non-IgE-mediated food allergy and a Food Protein-induced Enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES). A retrospective descriptive single-center study was conducted. Subjects included were children with acute FPIES who entered our instituti

Elevated homocysteine levels in patients with heart failure: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Elevated homocysteine (Hcy) levels showed increasing significance as the predisposing factor for the pathogenesis of atherosclerotic sequelae, including cardiovascular mortality, coronary artery disease, and stroke. There is increasing evidence linking plasma Hcy levels and heart failure (HF). The association between the elevated level of plasma Hcy and HF was examined by meta-analysis and systematic review in this study. METHODS: The PubMed and ScienceDirect databases until April 2020 were utilized to collect previous literature on plasma Hcy levels and the potential relation to

C-reactive Protein in Periodontitis and its Comparison with Body Mass Index and Smoking Behaviour.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic periodontitis is an infectious disease resulting in inflammation within the supporting tissues of the teeth, progressive attachment loss, and bone loss. In addition to declining oral health, there is always low grade infection present in periodontitis. Studies show increased levels of systemic biomarkers in periodontal disease such as CRP, which is considered a key-marker of CVD. Research has also shown positive association between BMI and smoking with periodontitis and CRP. The objective of the study was to assess the levels of CRP in patients with and without periodonti

Optical coherence tomography findings in patients with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Research in bipolar disorder suggests the presence of structural brain abnormalities. It is not clear whether these findings are trait markers or operate with the onset and progress with disease severity and duration. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive technique that detects degenerative changes in the retina reflecting brain degeneration. This study aimed at detecting these changes and relating them to disease severity and clinical characteristics. METHODS: A case-control study conducted in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine hospital, Faculty of Medicine at Cairo

Effect of traumatic imagery on cerebrospinal fluid dopamine and serotonin metabolites in posttraumatic stress disorder.

Dopaminergic mechanisms may be involved in the pathophysiology of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), although the evidence for this is limited; serotonergic mechanisms are implicated largely by virtue of the modest efficacy of serotonergic drugs in the treatment of the disorder. Basal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dopamine and serotonin metabolite concentrations are normal in PTSD patients. However, in the present experiment, we postulated that perturbations in CSF dopamine and serotonin metabolites could be induced by acute psychological stress. Ten volunteers with war-related chronic PTSD und

Quantifying women's stated benefit-risk trade-off preferences for IBS treatment outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The Food and Drug Administration, currently, is exploring quantitative benefit-risk methods to support regulatory decision-making. A scientifically valid method for assessing patients' benefit-risk trade-off preferences is needed to compare risks and benefits in a common metric. OBJECTIVES: The study aims to quantify the maximum acceptable risk (MAR) of treatment-related adverse events (AEs) that women with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are willing to accept in exchange for symptom relief. RESEARCH DESIGN: A stated-choice survey was used to elicit trade-off

Human breath odors and their use in diagnosis.

Humans emit a complex array of volatile and nonvolatile molecules that are influenced by an individual's genetics, health, diet, and stress. Olfaction is the most ancient of our distal senses and may be used to evaluate food and environmental toxins as well as recognize kin and potential predators. Many body odors evolved to be olfactory messengers, which convey information between individuals. Consequently, those practicing the healing arts have used olfaction to aid in their diagnosis of disease since the dawn of medical practice. Studies using modern instrumental analyses have focused upon

Influence of religiosity on HIV risk behaviors in active injection drug users.

Previous studies have shown a positive relationship between religiosity and the practice or adoption of protective health behaviors, including reduction of illicit drug use among hard-core injecting drug users (IDUs). The purpose of this study was to examine the role of religiosity in predicting HIV high-risk drug and sexual practices among a sample of IDUs in Chicago, USA. We hypothesized that high religiosity would be associated with a lower likelihood of IDUs engaging in risky behaviors for HIV transmission. Snowball sampling techniques were used to recruit 1,095 active IDUs for HIV testing

Behind the scenes of lying - cognitive and emotional processes revealed by reaction times and self-reports.

While lying is assumed to be cognitively and emotionally demanding, empirical research has primarily focused on cognitive mechanisms. The current study therefore examined cognitive and emotional components of lying simultaneously, using self-reports and reaction times. In two preregistered experiments (n = 49; n = 48), participants conducted a modified version of the Sheffield Lie Test, providing truthful and deceptive responses to neutral and mock-crime-related questions. After each block, participants rated their cognitive and emotional load, as well as specific subprocesses. Results reveale

Review of Clinical Equipoise: Examples from Oncology Trials.

BACKGROUND: The current standards that govern clinical research have been shaped over the years through many historical, social, and political events. The third principle of the Belmont Report, Justice, guides the scientific community toward the equal distribution of benefits and risks in research involving human subjects. Clinical equipoise is the status of genuine uncertainty by the investigator about the superiority of one treatment arm over the other. The term clinical equipoise was proposed to provide an ethical ground to conduct randomized controlled clinical trials. OBJECTIVE: The obje

Variants of GRM7 as risk factor and response to antipsychotic therapy in schizophrenia.

Genome-wide association study (GWAS) has determined the metabotropic glutamate receptor 7 (GRM7) gene as potential locus for schizophrenia risk variants; However, the relationship between the GRM7 variants and the risk of schizophrenia is still uncertain, and there are significant individual variations in response to the antipsychotic drugs. In order to identify susceptible gene and drug-response-related markers, 2413 subjects in our research were chosen for determining drug-response-related markers in schizophrenia. The rs1516569 variant (OR = 0.95, P < 3.47 × 10-4) was a significant risk fac

Challenges associated with peripheral arterial disease in women.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is an increasingly recognized disorder that is associated with functional impairment, quality-of-life deterioration, increased risk of cardiovascular ischemic events, and increased risk of total and cardiovascular mortality. Although earlier studies suggested that PAD was more common in men, recent reports based on more sensitive tests have shown that the prevalence of PAD in women is at least the same as in men, if not higher. PAD tends to present itself asymptomatically or with atypical symptoms more frequently in women than in men, and is associated with co

Case report: reduction of low back pain in a professional golfer.

Previous research agrees that the majority of injuries that affect male golfers are located in the lower back and that they are related to improper swing mechanics and/or the repetitive nature of the swing. This study describes the trunk motion and paraspinal muscle activity during the swing of a golfer with related low back pain (LBP) and assesses the effect of a 3-month period of muscle conditioning and coaching on these variables. Motion of the trunk was measured using three-dimensional video analysis and electromyograms (EMGs) were recorded from the same six sites of the erector spinae at

Effects of bogus genetic feedback on subjective and physiological responses to acute stress.

Recent advances in direct-to-consumer genetic testing have made individualized genetic risk feedback increasingly accessible, yet its psychological impact remains unclear. Initial findings suggest potential adverse outcomes, including increased worry and biased symptom reporting. Given that stress reactivity is partially heritable and a key risk factor for numerous stress-related conditions, understanding the influence of genetic feedback on stress reactivity is critical. In this study, we investigated how receiving bogus genetic feedback about stress vulnerability influences subjective, physi

Post-pandemic shocks and non-suicidal self-injury risk in working-age adults: differential pathways via psychological distress and social support.

BACKGROUND: During the post COVID 19 transition, psychological challenges have shifted from short term reactions to enduring psychosocial strain that depletes individual coping resources and fosters maladaptive responses, with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) showing a sharp rise in prevalence. Despite its clinical severity and links to suicide risk, research on NSSI in the context of large scale public health emergencies remains limited, particularly among working-age adults who are especially vulnerable to pandemic related disruptions. METHODS: Data were collected via a nationwide online sur
