Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) cases were first reported in Wuhan, Hubei province of China in December, 2019. SARS- COV-2 primarily affects the cardio-respiratory system. Over the last few months, several studies have described various neurological sequelae of SARS-COV-2 infection. Neurological complications are more frequent in patients with severe respiratory infections. In this review, we have analyzed the current literature on neuromuscular complications associated with SARS-COV-2 and highlighted possible mechanisms of neuromuscular invasion. We reviewed 11 st

UNLABELLED: Nicotine is one of the most easily accessible, commonly abused drugs worldwide and if taken in overdose can cause serious clinical presentation, including cardiac arrhythmias and neurotoxicity mediated through oxidative stress. Its toxicity though rare can cause sudden deaths by cardiovascular arrest, respiratory muscle paralysis, and/or central respiratory failure. Here, we describe a case of intentional fatal ingestion of nicotine sulfate decoction used as a mean for fatal suicidal attempt by a 15-year-old adolescent male who was suffering from childhood-onset depression since ab

Autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxia type 8 (SCAR8) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by variants of the SYNE1 gene. It presents with progressive cerebellar ataxia, and some patients exhibit multisystemic symptoms. A 33-year-old woman had cerebellar ataxia since childhood, motor neuron disease, vocal cord abduction paralysis, joint deformities, oculocutaneous telangiectasia, and obesity, and required a tracheostomy. Whole-exome sequencing revealed compound heterozygous nonsense variants of SYNE1 (NM_033071.5), including the novel variant c.18727C>T (p.Gln6243Ter). The SYNE1 mRNA expressi

The Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) represents a group of immune-mediated peripheral polyneuropathies, which are the most common cause of acute flaccid paralysis in clinical practice. Its most prevalent form is acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP), though multiple variants are also recognized, such as axonal neuropathies (AMAN, AMSAN) and MillerFisher syndrome. Diagnosis remains primarily clinical, supported by findings in cerebrospinal fluid analysis, neurophysiological studies, and, in certain cases, specific serology. Early detection is crucial to prevent potentially fatal c

Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) is an uncommon form of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a neurological condition that is acquired, degenerative, demyelinating, and frequently characterized by gradual, symmetrical ascending paralysis. Ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and areflexia are common symptoms that follow a bacterial or viral infection. Here, we want to draw attention to a rare case of MFS in a 45-year-old Indian female who had dysphagia, dysphasia, ataxia, and dyskinesia while moving around. Unusually, she had no past medical history of Campylobacter jejuni infection, recent vaccinations, upper resp

A 20-year-old man with pulmonary arterial hypertension secondary to systemic sclerosis was admitted to our hospital. Prior to admission, his PAH had been successfully managed with the use of tadalafil, ambrisentan and inhaled Tyvaso. Owing to respiratory failure from vocal cord paralysis, he underwent an emergent tracheotomy. The delivery of inhaled Tyvaso through a tracheostomy tube was explored. Post-tracheostomy, the patient continued his ability to self-administer the medication. His WHO functional classification, brain natriuretic peptide levels, and echocardiograms were not significantly

Progressive neuromuscular symptoms years after recovery from acute paralytic poliomyelitis have been termed the PPS. We describe a 52-year-old man who contracted poliomyelitis at age 9 years who fully recovered and 33 years later developed progressive dyspnea. Neurologic evaluation revealed bilateral paralysis of the vocal cords, generalized weakness, and accentuated mouth occlusion pressure and ventilatory responses to hypercapnic, hyperoxic breathing. An EMG and muscle biopsy showed changes consistent with acute and chronic denervation. Cardiopulmonary exercise evaluation demonstrated a pulm

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is the most prevalent cause of acute flaccid paralysis, often following an antecedent illness such as upper respiratory infections. Acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN), a subtype of GBS, predominantly affects motor axons, resulting in significant motor impairment, and is frequently associated with Campylobacter jejuni infection. We present a case of a three-year-old female patient who developed AMAN, a subtype of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). Approximately 10 days prior to admission, she had a history of fever, sore throat, and cough, which slightly improved for

Post-extubation stridor poses a significant challenge in critical care settings, often necessitating prompt intervention to prevent respiratory compromise and potential reintubation. This case report details the successful management of post-extubation stridor in a 55-year-old female patient with a complex medical history, using heliox therapy. Heliox, a gas mixture of helium and oxygen, has emerged as a novel therapeutic option in such scenarios, owing to its ability to reduce airway resistance and improve gas flow dynamics. Following the patient's elective intubation for MRI imaging, she dev

BACKGROUND: As a global health pandemic, the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS- CoV2) outbreak began in December 2019 which rapidly spread to more than 200 countries. Respiratory complications and fever are the most obvious symptoms. Sometimes the neurological features are superimposed on the main disease and complicate patient's status.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe 6 patients with COVID-19 and concomitant quadriparesia who underwent electrodiagnosis using EMG/NCS and results indicated 3 axonal variants of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), including; 2 cases AMAN (acu

In acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients, spontaneous breathing is associated with multiple physiologic benefits: it prevents muscles atrophy, avoids paralysis, decreases sedation needs and is associated with improved hemodynamics. On the other hand, in the presence of uncontrolled inspiratory effort, severe lung injury and asynchronies, spontaneous ventilation might also worsen lung edema, induce diaphragm dysfunction and lead to muscles exhaustion and prolonged weaning. In the present review article, we present physiologic mechanis

BACKGROUND: In recent years, we have observed respiratory difficulty manifested as paroxysmal laryngospasm in a few outpatients, most of whom were first encountered in a respiratory clinic. We therefore explored how to identify and address paroxysmal laryngospasm from the perspective of respiratory physicians.
METHODS: The symptoms, characteristics, auxiliary examination results, treatment, and prognosis of 12 patients with paroxysmal laryngospasm treated in our hospital from June 2017 to October 2019 were analyzed.
RESULTS: Five males (42%) and 7 females (58%) were among the 12 Han patients

CASE: A 45-year-old man presented with posttraumatic fracture-dislocation of T11/12 with neurological level T8 AIS A. Sensory level progressed to T4 in the next day morning. He underwent T10, T11, T12, and L1 percutaneous pedicle screw-rod fixation. Postoperatively, there was rapid worsening of his neurology and within 48 hours, he became tetraplegic with neurological level C2 with respiratory paralysis requiring mechanical ventilation. He died on the 14th postoperative day. Clinicoradiological findings were consistent with subacute posttraumatic ascending myelopathy (SPAM).

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune disorder in which an individual's immune system attacks the peripheral nerve myelin. Although rare, but serious, the syndrome typically starts with numbness, tingling, or weakness in the lower extremities and progresses in an ascending fashion. Severe weakness can transmit into paralysis and respiratory compromise. Although rare, GBS has been reported as a complication of multiple surgeries including orthopedic, cardiovascular, transplant, and general surgeries. To our knowledge, we here present the first case report of GBS after minimally invasiv

Fourteen patients with unilateral paralysis of the recurrent laryngeal nerve underwent a combined therapy which included acupuncture, phonopedics, respiratory muscle gymnastics, prozerin administration by means of sinusoidal modulated currents, and intramuscular injection of B1 and B6 vitamins. Before and after treatment the vocal function was assessed using indirect laryngoscopy, laryngostroboscopy, larynx tomography and thermography, larynx endophotography, voice tape recording, and maximum phonation time measurement. The combined treatment yielded good results in all patients in terms of th

Chest infections are serious complications in neuromuscular disorders. The predictive values of lung and respiratory muscle function including peak cough flow still remain unclear. We performed retrospective analysis of 46 children and adolescents (12.7+/-3.7 years) in whom lung function, respiratory muscle function and peak cough flows had been obtained. Data were related to: (1). number of chest infections and days of antibiotic treatment the year prior to the study and (2). history of severe chest infection requiring hospital admission. The number of chest infections and the number of days

Background/Objectives: Respiratory impairment is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in participants with spinal cord injury (SCI). Cervical SCI (cSCI) severely compromises respiratory function due to paralysis and weakness of the respiratory muscles. Recent evidence suggests that transcutaneous electrical spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) may enhance motor strength and promote functional recovery. Therefore, cervical tSCS, applied at cervical segments, holds potential as a therapeutic strategy to improve respiratory function in participants with cervical SCI. Methods: This randomized co

Hemisection of the spinal cord at C2 eliminates ipsilateral descending drive to the phrenic nucleus and causes hemidiaphragmatic paralysis in rats. Phrenic nerve (PhN) or diaphragmatic activity ipsilateral to hemisection can occasionally be induced acutely following hemisection by respiratory stressors (i.e., hypercapnia, asphyxia, contralateral phrenicotomy) and becomes spontaneously active days-to-weeks later. These investigations, however, are potentially confounded by the use of anesthesia, which may suppress spontaneously-active crossed phrenic pathways. Experiments were performed on vecu
