Leishmania infantum detection in Nyssomyia neivai and dogs in Southern Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The sand fly Nyssomyia neivai is one of the most abundant species in Southern Brazil. It is frequently found in areas that are foci of visceral leishmaniasis in the state of Santa Catarina, caused by Leishmania infantum. In this region, the main vector of L. infantum, Lutzomyia longipalpis, has not been detected. In the absence of L. longipalpis, this study aimed to identify the sand fly fauna and diagnose any potential Leishmania spp. infection in sand flies and in dogs in a region of Southern Brazil that experienced a recent canine visceral leishmaniasis outbreak. METHODS: This …

Evaluation of the efficacy of a topically administered combination of imidacloprid and permethrin against Phlebotomus perniciosus in dog.

The phlebotomine sand fly Phlebotomus perniciosus is one of the main vectors of Leishmania infantum, responsible for human and canine leishmaniasis in the Mediterranean Basin. The objective of this study was to evaluate the repellent and insecticidal efficacy of imidacloprid 10% (w/v)/permethrin 50% (w/v) spot-on against sand flies (P. perniciosus) on dogs. The dogs used in this trial were laboratory-bred beagles: eight were impregnated with the solution (treated group), while the other eight were left untreated (control group). On day 0 the animals in the treatment group received 0.1 ml/kg bo…

Elimination of COD, microorganisms and pharmaceuticals from sewage by trickling through sandy soil below leaking sewers.

To simulate the filtration and/or degradation of trickling sewage from leaky sewers through the non-water-saturated underground, sewage was trickled through sand of 0.4-2mm from the Rhine valley in glass columns of 125 cm length. For the same sewage the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was almost independent of low or high trickling rates. The COD removal efficiency varied, however, from 67% to 79%, for sewage from rain and dry weather periods, respectively. The water content of the moist sand increased from initially 80 ml kg(-1) with increasing sewage trickling rates to 108 ml kg(-1) san…

Impact of freeze-thaw cycles on the remobilization behaviors of microplastics in natural soils.

Freeze-thaw (FT) cycle would greatly influence the fate of plastic particles (one of emerging contaminants with great concerns) in soils, yet its impacts and mechanisms remain unclear. The vertical migration/release behaviors of plastic particles (with diameters of 0.2 μm and 1 μm) in two natural soils and one model soil (i.e. quartz sand) without/with FT treatments (1 and 3 cycles) were examined. Owing to the presence of Fe/Al oxide minerals, finer pore structure, and uneven surfaces of natural soils, the breakthrough ratio of plastics in two natural soils was over 25% lower than in quartz sa…

Leishmania sp. detection and blood-feeding behaviour of Sergentomyia minuta collected in the human leishmaniasis focus of southwestern Madrid, Spain (2012-2017).

Phlebotomine sand flies are the only known vectors of Leishmania spp. protozoan which causes leishmaniasis in 98 countries. In Spain, 11 sand fly species are described, but only Phlebotomus perniciosus and Phlebotomus ariasi are proven vectors of the disease. On the other hand, Sergentomyia minuta is one of the most abundant and ubiquitous sand flies in this territory, although scarce information is available about this species. Sand flies from this genus are known for their preference to feed on cold-blooded animals and are traditionally involved in the transmission of reptile Leishmania. How…

A proteomic map of the unsequenced kala-azar vector Phlebotomus papatasi using cell line.

The debilitating disease kala-azar or visceral leishmaniasis is caused by the kinetoplastid protozoan parasite Leishmania donovani. The parasite is transmitted by the hematophagous sand fly vector of the genus Phlebotomus in the old world and Lutzomyia in the new world. The predominant Phlebotomine species associated with the transmission of kala-azar are Phlebotomus papatasi and Phlebotomus argentipes. Understanding the molecular interaction of the sand fly and Leishmania, during the development of parasite within the sand fly gut is crucial to the understanding of the parasite life cycle. Th…

Toxicity studies of abrasive blasting agents administered by inhalation to F344/NTac rats and Sprague Dawley (Hsd:Sprague Dawley SD) Rats.

Abrasive blasting, commonly known as sandblasting, involves forcibly projecting a stream of abrasive particles through compressed air or steam against a surface to change its quality or to remove contaminants. Silica blasting sand contains high levels of crystalline silica--which can cause pulmonary fibrosis (silicosis) after exposure through inhalation and is considered a lung carcinogen--and constitutes approximately 63% of all abrasives used in abrasive blasting. Other abrasives, including specular hematite, are recommended as alternative blasting agents. Due to the health risks associated …

Influence of humidity and of the electric and magnetic microwave radiation fields on the remediation of TCE-contaminated natural sandy soils.

The influence of moisture content (15% w/w) on the remediation (vaporization) of trichloroethylene (TCE) present in natural sands, chosen as a TCE-polluted model system for soils, was investigated with regard to applied microwave power levels, the depth of the sand sample, and the dielectric factors. The heating process occurring in the sand samples arises through the microwave conduction loss heating and dielectric loss heating mechanisms. The characteristic relevance of the electric and magnetic microwave radiation fields to the heating mechanisms was also examined. Heating by the magnetic m…

Biosurfactant-affected mobility of oxytetracycline and its variations with surface chemical heterogeneity in saturated porous media.

Herein, the influences of rhamnolipid (a typical biosurfactant) on oxytetracycline (OTC) transport in the porous media and their variations with the surface heterogeneities of the media (uncoated sand, goethite (Goe)-, and humic acid (HA)-coated sands) were explored. Compared to uncoated sand, goethite and HA coatings suppressed OTC mobility by increasing deposition sites. Interestingly, rhamnolipid-affected OTC transport strongly depended on the chemical heterogeneities of aquifers and biosurfactant concentrations. Concretely, adding rhamnolipid (1-3 mg/L) inhibited OTC mobility through sand …

Revisiting the largest human leishmaniasis outbreak in Western Europe (Madrid, Spain): a follow-up entomological study in 2023 and 2024.

BACKGROUND: During the 2010s, Madrid experienced an outbreak of human leishmaniasis by Leishmania infantum, which affected at least 824 people until 2024 and peaked between 2010 and 2012. It was associated with a high density of infected Phlebotomus perniciosus sand fly vectors and, unusually, with rabbits and hares as the primary parasite reservoirs. In 2023 and 2024 we investigated sand fly species distribution, L. infantum infection rates, and bloodmeal sources in the outbreak area and compared the results with a similar study conducted in 2012-2014. METHODS: The four sand fly surveillance…

Improving properties of sandy soil and production of Phaseolus vulgaris cultivation using Azolla pinnata, eggshells, and biochar.

Sandy soils are characterized by low organic matter content, weak nutrient retention, and limited water-holding capacity, which restrict crop productivity in arid and semi-arid regions. This study evaluated the individual and combined effects of biochar, Azolla pinnata, and eggshell powder on soil properties and the productivity of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) grown in sandy soil. Field experiments were conducted during two consecutive growing seasons (2021-2022) at the Ismailia Agricultural Research Station, Egypt, using a randomized complete block design with eight treatments and thre…

A framework for estimating soil water characteristic curve and hydraulic conductivity function of permeable reactive media.

The unsaturated behavior of permeable reactive barriers (PRB) is a critical component in predicting the removal efficiency through the adsorption of contaminants. This study investigates the framework to estimate the soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) and hydraulic conductivity function (HCF) for iron oxide-coated sand (IOCS) and zeolite, which are common materials used in PRBs. A multistep outflow (MSO) experiment was performed and the results of the MSO experiment were used to optimize associated parameters in Kosugi's SWCC and HCF. In addition, three scenarios of optimization analysis w…

Mineralization and residue characteristics of chloramphenicol in aerobic soils: evidence from a carbon-14 study.

Chloramphenicol, a broad-spectrum antibiotic employed for controlling bacterial infections, presents an intriguing aspect in terms of its environmental fate in soils. 14C-labeled chloramphenicol was used to explore its mineralization and residue characteristics in three distinct agricultural soils in China. The findings revealed a nuanced pattern in the fate of 14C-chloramphenicol, with notable variations among the different soils under investigation. The chloramphenicol extract residue exhibited a reduction of 18.04% in sandy clay soil, 23.04% in clay loam soil, and 21.73% in loamy clay soil.…

Three Blind Moles: Molecular Evolutionary Insights on the Tempo and Mode of Convergent Eye Degeneration in Notoryctes typhlops (Southern Marsupial Mole) and Two Chrysochlorids (Golden Moles).

Golden moles (Chrysochloridae) and marsupial moles (Notoryctidae) are textbook examples of convergent evolution. Both taxa are highly adapted to subterranean lifestyles and have powerful limbs for digging through the soil/sand, ears that are adapted for low-frequency hearing, vestigial eyes that are covered by skin and fur, and the absence of optic nerve connections between the eyes and the brain. The eyes of marsupial moles also lack a lens as well as retinal rods and cones. Two hypotheses have been proposed to account for the greater degeneracy of the eyes of marsupial moles than golden mole…

Detection of diatoms in a case of mud aspiration at a coastal area.

The source of diatoms detected in non-drowned bodies have been attributed to postmortem invasion, contamination during autopsy or diatom testing, or "natural load." However, sand aspiration has not been reported as a source. Herein, we report an autopsy case in which diatoms were detected in a non-drowned human who had aspirated mud. A man in his 60 s was found dead at a harbor park in Japan. His whole body was covered with sand, including his face. A situational investigation suggested that he may have entered the sea. Autopsy revealed intratracheal mud, with no obvious findings indicating dr…

Systematic detection and evaluation of cracking behavior of flawed brittle sandstones with AE and 3D-DIC techniques.

Determination of the cracking behavior during crack propagation helps to better understand damage and fracture processes in brittle rocks. The paper studies the cracking behavior of rocks on three scales: macro-deformation (or macro-cracking), internal micro-fracture, and surface crack coalescence. Under uniaxial compression, the cracking behavior of two types of sandstone specimens having single flaws was experimentally and systematically investigated. Acoustic emission (AE) and three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC) techniques were utilized to continuously monitor the acoustic …
