Seed amplification assays (SAA) are the first credible molecular assay for Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the value of SAA to support the clinicians' initial diagnosis of PD is not clear. In our study, we analyzed cerebrospinal fluid samples from 121 PD patients recruited through population screening methods and taken within a median delay of 38 days from diagnosis and 51 normal controls without neurodegenerative disease. Nigella sativa oil, commonly known as black seed oil (BSO), is a well-known Mediterranean food, and its consumption is associated with beneficial effects on human health. A potent napin protein has been thoroughly characterized from seeds of rocket salad (Eruca sativa). Eruca sativa napin (EsNap) was purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation (70%) and size-exclusion chromatography. Single intact 16 kDa EsNap band was reduced to 11 and 5 kDa bands respectively on SDS-PAGE. Upcycled defatted sunflower seed flour (SUN), a by-product obtained from sunflower oil extraction, was used as an animal fat replacer to develop healthier frankfurters. For that end, animal fat was replaced (~50%) with water and 2% or 4% of SUN. Nutritional composition, technological, structural and sensorial properties were evaluated. A dog with a history of recurrent pericardial effusion that required repeated pericardiocentesis was presented to the surgical service at the Ontario Veterinary College Health Sciences Centre for thoracoscopic pericardiectomy. Physical examination revealed a subcutaneous mass in the right lateral thorax. Cytology of the subcutaneous mass and histopathology of the pericardium were consistent with mesothelioma. This article details the first reported case of pericardial mesothelioma with suspected extra-thoracic metastasis following pericardiocentesis in a dog.
