The pathways between abstinence self-efficacy, perceived social support and substance use craving.

Low abstinence self-efficacy, lack of social support, especially from family and friends, low self-esteem, feeling lonely, and lack of self-control have been considered as risk factors for substance use disorders, but the pathways of these risk factors on drug craving have not yet been determined. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the association between abstinence self-efficacy and perceived social support on the one hand to drug craving in patients referred to substance use treatment centers on the other hand, with loneliness, self-control, and self-esteem as mediating variables

Feeding the inner critic: Self-criticism and shame in the association of affiliative memories with emotional and disordered eating in women.

Emotional eating, defined as overeating in response to intense negative emotions, is considered part of a disordered eating continuum, as a milder form of binge eating. It is linked to high emotional dysregulation and risk factors like negative traumatic childhood memories, which have been associated with several negative psychopathological outcomes. Recent research has started to also highlight the negative impact of the lack of early positive memories on psychopathological outcomes, including eating-related disorders. This study explores the role of early affiliative memories on emotional ea

The role of cognitive disengagement syndrome in non-suicidal self-injury among adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

AIMS: We aimed to investigate the relationship between Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS) and non-suicidal self injury (NSSI) in adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: A semi-structured psychiatric interview and an NSSI screening questionnaire were conducted. Questionnaires assessing CDS (with daydreamer, sleepy, and slow subdimensions), depression, anxiety, self-esteem, emotion regulation, coping strategies, and loneliness were administered. RESULTS: Among 104 participants (n: 63, 60.6% girls), the combined type of ADHD was the most common (66.3%), an

Conflicting patterns of cardiovascular reactivity, self-report, and behavior associated with social anxiety during a conversation with a close friend.

Social anxiety (SA) is characterized by anxious symptomology and fear during social situations, but recent work suggests that SA may not necessarily be associated with negative interpersonal and intrapersonal outcomes in support contexts. The current research investigates the discrepancies between self-perceptions, behavior, and physiological responses associated with SA in social support conversations with close friends. Specifically, we examined the associations between SA and positive and negative affect, perceptions of demands and resources, and responsiveness. Additionally, we used the bi

Perfectionistic Concerns, Social Negativity, and Subjective Well-Being: A Test of the Social Disconnection Model.

Partner-specific perfectionistic concerns (PC) include concern over mistakes, self-criticism, and socially prescribed perfectionism as it pertains to one's partner. The social disconnection model proposes that PC influences well-being indirectly through interpersonal problems. Thus, we hypothesized that social negativity (expressed anger, hostility, and rejection) would mediate the relationship between dyadic PC and subjective well-being. Data from 203 romantic dyads (92.1% heterosexual) were collected using self-report surveys and a four-wave, 4-week longitudinal design. Participants were pre

Patients' Perspectives and Experiences Living with Systemic Sclerosis: A Systematic Review and Thematic Synthesis of Qualitative Studies.

OBJECTIVE: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic, progressive autoimmune disease with major end-organ involvement. Much attention has been focused on the management of physical and clinical manifestations; however, the effect of the disease and treatment on the patient's identity, relationships, functioning, and mental well-being are less known. We aimed to describe the patients' perspectives and experiences of living with SSc. METHODS: Electronic databases were searched to October 2014. Thematic synthesis was used to analyze the findings. RESULTS: We included 26 studies involving 463 patien

The effects of belief in good luck and counterfactual thinking on gambling behavior.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: One's belief in good luck, and belief that it is a personal trait, could play a crucial role in gambling behavior, and can lead gamblers to have an irrational anticipation to win and to over-generalize their subjective sense of control. And upward counterfactual thinking has been considered to be a factor that offsets those irrational beliefs. This study examined the effects of belief in good luck and of upward counterfactual thinking on gambling behavior. METHODS: The subjects of the study were 52 college students who had been classified as non-problematic and non-pathol

Hostility, religious involvement, gratitude, and self-rated health in late life.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates a latent variable model that assesses the relationships among hostility, church attendance, helping others, gratitude, and self-rated health. METHODS: The participants come from the sixth wave of a nationwide survey of older adults (N = 1,011). RESULTS: The data suggest that older individuals who go to church less often help others less frequently, older people who help others less are less grateful, and older adults who are less grateful rate their health in a less favorable manner. In addition, the data indicate that older people with high hostility scores

Rumination as a vulnerability factor to depression during the transition from early to middle adolescence: a multiwave longitudinal study.

The current study examined vulnerability to depression during the transition from early to middle adolescence from the perspective of the response styles theory. During an initial assessment, 382 adolescents (ages 11-15 years) completed self-report measures assessing rumination and depressive symptoms as well as a semistructured clinical interview assessing current and past major depressive episodes. Every 3 months for the subsequent 2 years, adolescents completed self-report measures assessing depressive symptoms and negative events. Every 6 months, adolescents completed a semistructured clin

Agreement between parent and child report of quality of life in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is little information in the research literature of agreement between parent and child in reports of child quality of life (QOL) for a sample of children diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The aim of our study was to determine whether parent and child concordance is greater for physical domains of QOL than for psychosocial domains; whether parents rate their child's QOL better or poorer than their child's ratings; and whether concordance is related to demographic, socioeconomic or clinical factors. METHODS: The study was a questionnaire survey of

Infant intersubjectivity: research, theory, and clinical applications.

We review research evidence on the emergence and development of active "self-and-other" awareness in infancy, and examine the importance of its motives and emotions to mental health practice with children. This relates to how communication begins and develops in infancy, how it influences the individual subject's movement, perception, and learning, and how the infant's biologically grounded self-regulation of internal state and self-conscious purposefulness is sustained through active engagement with sympathetic others. Mutual self-other-consciousness is found to play the lead role in developi

Effects of facial paralysis after acoustic neuroma surgery in Norway.

This survey investigated how individuals with facial paralysis resulting from acoustic neuroma surgery manage self-care needs of daily living. Facial paralysis was defined to include damage from surgery to other cranial nerves located in the same area as the facial nerve. The 40 patients surveyed had surgery performed at the Neurosurgical Department, National Hospital of Norway, Oslo, during a four-year period. The instrument used was a questionnaire based on Orem's universal self-care requisites. Results showed that problems related to eating and drinking and certain physiological problems we

Selective encoding failure of self-face identity in subthreshold depression.

Subthreshold depression is associated with significant functional impairment and elevated risk of major depressive disorder. A negative self-concept may disrupt the implicit positive association evoked by one's own face, impairing incidental encoding of self-relevant information. Whether subthreshold depression involves a selective deficit in encoding self-face identity remains unclear. The attribute amnesia paradigm is well suited to address this question because it can dissociate attentional selection from working memory encoding. Using this paradigm, we examined the issue across two experim

Lessons learned from a pilot implementation of physical activity recommendations in axial spondyloarthritis exercise group therapy.

BACKGROUND: The Ankylosing Spondylitis Association of Switzerland (SVMB) aimed to implement physical activity recommendations (PAR) within their exercise groups (EGs). The PAR promote exercise in all fitness dimensions at the correct dose. To implement the PAR within EGs, they were translated into a new EG concept with five key activities: (a) training for supervising physiotherapists (PTs), (b) correctly dosed exercises in all fitness dimensions, (c) exercise counselling, (d) bi-annual fitness assessments, and (e) individual exercise training, in addition to EG. All these activities were real

Breaking the vicarious trap: two buffers against close others' environmental influence.

BACKGROUND: Close others' pro-environmental or anti-environmental behaviors can create a vicarious trap: good deeds trigger licensing (reducing one's own effort), and bad deeds induce identification (justifying inaction). However, how this trap can be mitigated remains unclear. METHODS: Across four studies (total N = 523), we found evidence for the vicarious trap in pro‑environmental behavior (PEB) and tested two buffers: situational openness (Study 2) and environmental self‑identity (Studies 3-4). Study 1 compared relationship types; Study 4 combined a brief identity‑enhancement intervention

Neural correlates linked to developmental and affective disorder-related self-referential processing: an ALE meta-analysis.

Recent models of self-development highlight different rates of development in brain networks underlying emotion and cognition, which may contribute to increased vulnerability to depression and social anxiety disorder during adolescence. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies suggest age- and affective disorder-related differences in neural activation during self-referential processing (SRP)-a cognitive process central to typical and atypical development. However, findings are mixed, with high methodological variability. We conducted the first activation likelihood estimation meta
