Performance of anterior nares and tongue swabs for nucleic acid, Nucleocapsid, and Spike antigen testing for detecting SARS-CoV-2 against nasopharyngeal PCR and viral culture.

OBJECTIVES: This study assesses and compares the performance of different swab types and specimen collection sites for SARS-CoV-2 testing, to reference standard real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and viral culture. METHODS: Symptomatic adults with COVID-19 who visited routine COVID-19 testing sites used spun polyester and FLOQSwabs to self-collect specimens from the anterior nares and tongue. We evaluated the self-collected specimen from anterior nares and tongue swabs for the nucleocapsid (N) or spike (S) antigen of SARS-CoV-2 by RT-PCR and then compared these

Testing Makes Us Stronger™: Evaluating the correlation between exposure and intermediate outcomes targeted by the campaign's messages.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether self-reported exposure to Testing Makes Us Stronger™ (TMUS), an HIV testing health communication campaign for black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (BMSM), was associated with key intermediate outcomes targeted by the campaign's messages. METHODS: Data from sexually active, HIV-negative or unknown status BMSM aged 18-44 (N = 590) were collected through an anonymous Web-based survey that measured sociodemographics, campaign exposure, attitudinal beliefs, normative beliefs, self-efficacy, and HIV testing intentions, among other variables. Using Urine Drug Testing to Estimate the Prevalence of Drug Use : Lessons Learned From the New York City Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2013-2014.

OBJECTIVES: Estimating the prevalence of drug use in the general population is important given its potential health consequences but is challenging. Self-reported surveys on drug use have inherent limitations that underestimate drug use. We evaluated the performance of linking urine drug testing with a local, representative health examination survey in estimating the prevalence of drug use in New York City (NYC). METHODS: We used urine drug testing from the NYC Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NYC HANES) to estimate the prevalence of drug use (benzodiazepines, cocaine, heroin, and opi

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Rectal and Urethral Sexually Transmitted Infections From Self-Collected Samples Among Young Men Who Have Sex With Men Participating in the Keep It Up! 2.0 Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite recommendations that sexually active men who have sex with men be regularly tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and that testing reflect anatomical sites of potential exposure, regular testing is not widely performed, especially for rectal STIs. As such, little is known about the prevalence of rectal and urethral STIs among young men who have sex with men (YMSM). METHODS: The current study examined the prevalence and risk factors for rectal and urethral chlamydia and gonorrhea in a sample of 1113 YMSM ages 18 to 29 years (mean, 24.07 years). Before participat

Why I Can't, Won't or Don't Test for HIV: Insights from Australian Migrants Born in Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia.

People born in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia are overrepresented in HIV notifications in Australia. Just under half of all notifications among people from sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia are diagnosed late. Increased HIV testing among these communities is necessary to ensure early diagnosis, better care and reduce likelihood of HIV onward transmission. Recently, Australia has made new HIV testing methods available: rapid HIV testing and self-testing kits. We conducted 11 focus groups with 77 participants with people from sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia in fo…

[Self-monitoring of oral coagulation: for which patients?].

Oral anticoagulant treatment with vitamin K antagonists (VKA) is prescribed to an increasing number of patients. These drugs are, however, one of the leading causes of iatrogenic disease. It is essential to monitor the intensity of anticoagulation very closely, by a biological measure (INR, international normalized ratio),to minimize the frequency of thrombotic and hemorrhagic events that may occur in the case of insufficient or excessive anticoagulation. Current methods of monitoring INR can be improved.Self-testing of INR and self-monitoring of oral coagulation treatment offer advantages over…

HIV treatment cascade for older adults in rural South Africa.

OBJECTIVES: The HIV treatment cascade is a powerful framework for understanding progress from initial diagnosis to successful treatment. Data sources for cascades vary and often are based on clinical cohorts, population cohorts linked to clinics, or self-reported information. We use both biomarkers and self-reported data from a large population-based cohort of older South Africans to establish the first HIV cascade for this growing segment of the HIV-positive population and compare results using the different data sources. METHODS: Data came from the Health and Aging in Africa: A Longitudinal

Community perspectives on ideal bacterial STI testing services for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in Toronto, Canada: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Innovation is needed to produce sustained improvements in bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STI) testing given suboptimal access and uptake among sexually active gay, bisexual or other men who have sex with men (GBM). Yet, the STI testing processes and technologies that best address local testing barriers among GBM in Toronto is unknown. We aimed to explore men's perspectives regarding STI testing services for GBM to identify and prioritize new STI testing interventions in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. METHODS: We conducted four focus groups with twenty-seven GBM in 2017: two

Concordance between self-reported SARS-CoV-2 positivity and laboratory-confirmed positivity.

As the use and availability of at-home antigen tests for SARS-CoV-2 infection have increased, the number of individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infections that are reported to state COVID-19 surveillance systems have decreased. Self-reported infection dates are critical to accurately track incidence and outbreaks of COVID-19 and for continued research on illness progression; however, the reliability of self-reported infection dates is unknown to date. To assess accuracy of self-reported test dates, we utilized self-reported SARS-CoV-2 testing data from the Arizona CoVHORT Study (CoVHORT) and laborator

Predictors of Intention to Use At-Home HPV Testing: Health Belief Factors and Potential Moderation by Decision-Making Style.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer screening rates are declining in the United States and below the Healthy People 2030 goal of 79.2%. Alternative screening methods to the Pap test (e.g., at-home human papilloma virus [HPV] testing) need to be explored to determine if they are feasible for those unscreened and underscreened. The purpose of this study was to determine the relative importance of Health Belief Model constructs on intention to use at-home HPV testing and explore possible moderation by a person's decision-making style. METHODS: A total of 300 women aged 30-65 in the United States were re

Self-Collected Gargle Lavage Allows Reliable Detection of SARS-CoV-2 in an Outpatient Setting.

Current procurement of specimens for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) detection requires trained personnel and dedicated equipment. We compared standard nasopharyngeal swabs with self-collected gargle lavage fluid obtained from 80 mostly symptomatic outpatients. After RNA extraction, RT-PCR to detect SARS-CoV-2 was performed. Qualitative results obtained with the paired samples from individual outpatients were 100% congruent. Therefore, self-collected gargle lavage fluid can serve as a suitable specimen for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) testing in outpatients.

High-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia in human papillomavirus self-sampling of screening non-attenders.

BACKGROUND: Self-sampling for human papillomavirus (HPV) offered to women who do not participate in cervical cancer screening is an increasingly popular method to increase screening coverage. The rationale behind self-sampling is that unscreened women harbour a high proportion of undetected precancer lesions. Here, we compare the cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or worse (⩾CIN2) detection rate between non-attenders who participated in self-sampling and women attending routine screening. METHODS: A total of 23 632 women who were qualified as non-attenders in the Copenhagen Region wer

Brief Report: Lower Self-Efficacy and Lower PrEP Stigma Predict telePrEP Preferences Among HIV Self-Testers.

BACKGROUND: Remote health services, such as HIV self-testing (HIVST) and telehealth-based PrEP (telePrEP), can reduce barriers to prevention care. The goal of this study was to evaluate preferences for telePrEP services among a cohort of individuals who obtained HIVST. We hypothesized that preferences for telePrEP would be associated with lower self-efficacy and higher PrEP stigma. METHODS: Individuals ≥17 years of age who obtained a HIVST through the Philadelphia Department of Public Health and reported a negative test result were eligible for the study. Participants completed an online surv…

Psychopathy testing bias in sexual orientation minorities.

Measures of psychopathic personality traits have been utilized in a variety of settings and are often weighed heavily in decision-making. Though there is evidence of testing bias in marginalized groups, no evaluation of potential bias has been conducted for bias among sexual orientation minorities. This study utilized a slope-intercept bias approach to evaluate the testing bias of three self-report psychopathy measures: the Triarchic Psychopathy Measure, the Comprehensive Assessment of Psychopathic Personality-Self-Report, and the Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy Scale. Broadly, the current fi

First-time testers in the GetaKit study: conceptualizing new paths to care for gbMSM.

When analyzing the data for Ontario, Canada, HIV rates continue to be highest among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM). Since HIV diagnosis is a key component of HIV care, self-testing has provided options for allowing this population to access care, resulting in a significant number of first-time testers. Between 1 April 2021 and 31 January 2022, 882 gbMSM participants ordered an HIV self-test through GetaKit. Of these, 270 participants reported that they had never undergone HIV testing previously. Our data showed that first-time testers were generally younger, members …
