[Conceptual clarification of ecosystem stability: Core dimensions, organizational levels, and scale characte-ristics].

Ecosystem stability is characterized by multidimensionality, hierarchical organization, and scale dependence. The lack of a clear conceptual framework has often led to confusion. We systematically examined the connotations, core dimensions, organizational levels, and spatiotemporal scale dependencies of ecosystem stability. In a narrow sense, ecosystem stability commonly refers to temporal stability of productivity, which is typically quantified as the ratio of the mean to the standard deviation of productivity (the inverse of the coefficient of variation). In a broader sense, ecosystem stabil

Quorum-sensing microbial dark matter enables core functions in wastewater microbiomes.

Quorum-sensing bacteria (QSB) play a crucial role in coordinating microbial activities in activated sludge. However, our knowledge is primarily based on cultivated or taxonomically classified species, neglecting microbial dark matter (MDM), which comprises lineages lacking reference genomes and is prevalent in wastewater communities. Herein, 3569 high- and medium-quality metagenome-assembled genomes were obtained from 69 full-scale wastewater treatment plants. A total of 1289 MDM lineages were identified to possess quorum sensing (QS) capabilities, designated as MDM-QSB. Among them, 127 novel

Light-Triggered p-n Junction Switching in Hierarchical GaxIn2-xO3@MIL-68(GaIn) Nanotube Gas Sensors with Thermally Adaptive Dual-Selectivity toward Acetic Anhydride and Isopropanol.

Acetic anhydride and isopropanol are essential chemical raw materials, and their accurate and efficient detection is of great significance. Conventionally, the sensing of these two gases requires two distinct types of sensors, which increases the complexity of the detection device. Meanwhile, sensors still face challenges regarding detection limits and power consumption. To address these issues, this study constructed a heterogeneous structure of hierarchical GaxIn2-xO3@MIL-68(GaIn) nanotubes based on the bimetallic metal-organic framework (BMOF) precursor MIL-68(GaIn). This heterogeneous stru

IL-1-mediated cancer-adapted hematopoiesis in aging and clonal hematopoiesis.

A defining and evolutionary-selected feature of hematopoiesis is its capacity to adapt to organismal cellular needs. This demand-adapted hematopoiesis relies on a complex peripheric immune system capable of sensing minute amounts of damage and pathogen molecular patterns and trigger an inflammation-based reaction that sets the organism on alert. At a receiver-end of this response are bone marrow (BM) hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) which rapidly sense inflammatory messages and engage in differentiating divisions to replenish the consumed innate immune cells, bringing the organi

Unlocking the Comparative Potential of Porous Frameworks: A Review on MOFs and COFs for Gas Sorption.

Gases are integral to Earth's climate and ecosystem balance, but human activity has significantly altered atmospheric composition by increasing greenhouse gas emissions. In 2025, carbon dioxide emissions were estimated at around 39-41 billion tons, reflecting a continued increase. Emissions of carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide were expected to remain close to 2.5 billion tons, 100 million tons, and 25 million metric tons, respectively. Hydrogen sulfide emissions decreased to 15 million tons compared with the previous year. These numbers underscore the challenge of addressin

The economic burden of overweight and obesity in Brazil: perspectives for the Brazilian Unified Health System.

OBJECTIVES: Parallel to rising obesity prevalence in Brazil, there is expected to be increased direct health care costs related to non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In this study, we estimated the economic burden of NCDs attributable to overweight and obesity in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). METHODS: We used self-reported body mass index of 85,715 adults from the 2019 Brazilian National Health Survey. Annual costs (1 US$ = 2.281 Reais) with inpatient and outpatient procedures were obtained from the Hospital and Ambulatory Information Systems of the Brazilian SUS. Relative risks f

Single-cell transcriptomic analysis of neuroepithelial cells and other cell types of the gills of zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposed to hypoxia.

The fish gill is a multifunctional organ involved in numerous physiological processes, such as gas exchange and sensing of hypoxia by respiratory chemoreceptors, called neuroepithelial cells (NECs). Many studies have focused on zebrafish (Danio rerio) to investigate the structure, function and development of the gills, yet the transcriptomic profile of most gill cells remains obscure. We present the results of a comprehensive transcriptomic analysis of the gills of zebrafish using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq). Gill cells from ETvmat2:EGFP zebrafish were individually labelled before s

Renal hypoxia-HIF-PHD-EPO signaling in transition metal nephrotoxicity: friend or foe?

The kidney is the main organ that senses changes in systemic oxygen tension, but it is also the key detoxification, transit and excretion site of transition metals (TMs). Pivotal to oxygen sensing are prolyl-hydroxylases (PHDs), which hydroxylate specific residues in hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs), key transcription factors that orchestrate responses to hypoxia, such as induction of erythropoietin (EPO). The essential TM ion Fe is a key component and regulator of the hypoxia-PHD-HIF-EPO (HPHE) signaling axis, which governs erythropoiesis, angiogenesis, anaerobic metabolism, adaptation, survi

A Golgi Apparatus-Targeting, Naphthalimide-Based Fluorescent Molecular Probe for the Selective Sensing of Formaldehyde.

Formaldehyde (FA) is a colorless, flammable, foul-smelling chemical used in building materials and in the production of numerous household chemical goods. Herein, a fluorescent chemosensor for FA is designed and prepared using a selective organ-targeting probe containing naphthalimide as a fluorophore and hydrazine as a FA-binding site. The amine group of the hydrazine reacts with FA to form a double bond and this condensation reaction is accompanied by a shift in the absorption band of the probe from 438 nm to 443 nm upon the addition of FA. Further, the addition of FA is shown to enhance the

Interspecies bacterial communication produces a delicate balance between Vibrio cholerae and the chironomid egg mass microbiome.

The evolution of antimicrobial resistance in bacterial pathogens is considered by the World Health Organization to be one of the ten most concerning public health threats facing humanity (World Health Organization, 2020). Bacterial diseases previously controllable by antibiotics are resurging and treatment options are dwindling. Cholera is one such disease. Human pathogenic strains of Vibrio cholerae cause as many as 4 million cases of disease resulting in over 100,000 deaths each year (Ali et al. 2015) and multidrug-resistant V. cholerae is now established where pandemic cholera persists. Vitamin D and calcium deficits predispose for multiple chronic diseases.

There is evidence from both observational studies and clinical trials that calcium malnutrition and hypovitaminosis D are predisposing conditions for various common chronic diseases. In addition to skeletal disorders, calcium and vitamin D deficits increase the risk of malignancies, particularly of colon, breast and prostate gland, of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases (e.g. insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis), as well as of metabolic disorders (metabolic syndrome, hypertension). The aim of the present review was to provide improved un

A review of the marine biogeochemical response to typhoons.

Typhoons are extreme weather events that can not only affect marine dynamics, but also change marine biogeochemistry, considerably impacting the climate. Based on the satellite remote sensing data, the upwelling of abundant nutrients induced by typhoons from deeper eutrophic water to the upper oligotrophic layer triggers phytoplankton blooms in the upper oceans, thereby increasing new productivity (as a carbon sink). However, field observations have shown that organic matter decomposition (as a carbon source) is the dominant process regardless of whether phytoplankton blooms occur after typhoo

Cathodic deposition of MOF films: mechanism and applications.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) thin films could be used for ion/molecular sieving, sensing, catalysis, and energy storage, but thus far no large-scale applications are known. One of the reasons is the lack of convenient and controllable fabrication methods. This work reviews the cathodic deposition of MOF films, which has advantages (e.g., simple operations, mild conditions, and controllable MOF film thickness/morphology) over other reported techniques. Accordingly, we discuss the mechanism of the cathodic deposition of MOF films which consists of the electrochemically triggered deprotonation o

Effects of Human Nucleolus Upon Guest Viral-Life, Focusing in COVID-19 Infection: A Mini- Review.

The nucleolus is a subcellular membrane-less structure of eukaryotic cells. In 1965, in a world's southern summer summit in Uruguay, the role of the nucleolus as the site of ribosome synthesis, biogenesis, and processing of tRNA was conclusively established. Today, accumulating evidence confirm the multiple functions of the nucleolus, including tRNA precursor processing, cell stress sensing, as well as being influential in gene silencing, senescence, lifespan, DNA damage response (DDR), and cell cycle regulation. Therefore, nucleolopathy is observed in various human diseases. Modern advances h

Centrosome dysfunction in human diseases.

Centrosomes are the major microtubule organizing centers in a large number of animal cells. They are involved in diverse cellular functions like cell division, migration, sensing and motility. Despite being identified more than 100 years ago, they did not receive much attention until recent discoveries suggesting their association with human diseases. Centrosome-related defects have been observed in several human diseases including cancers, brain disorders and ciliopathies. Researchers in the field are trying to understand the relationship between centrosomes and these diseases. Accordingly, t

Physiology of the Carotid Body: From Molecules to Disease.

The carotid body (CB) is an arterial chemoreceptor organ located in the carotid bifurcation and has a well-recognized role in cardiorespiratory regulation. The CB contains neurosecretory sensory cells (glomus cells), which release transmitters in response to hypoxia, hypercapnia, and acidemia to activate afferent sensory fibers terminating in the respiratory and autonomic brainstem centers. Knowledge of the physiology of the CB has progressed enormously in recent years. Herein we review advances concerning the organization and function of the cellular elements of the CB, with emphasis on the m

The triple threat of cryptococcosis: it's the body site, the strain, and/or the host.

Cryptococcosis is the leading invasive fungal infection in the world today. Over the past century, the causative agents, Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii, have risen from the status of medical curiosities to common but life-threatening central nervous system pathogens. In an elegant experimental pathobiology study of these two organisms carried out by Ngamskulrungroj et al., there are three matters that merit further discussion. First is the question of whether there is a variable specific pathobiology for each yeast strain. Does it make biological and clinical sense to designat

Infections associated with Bartonella species in persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus.

Two members of the genus Bartonella, Bartonella quintana (formerly Rochalimaea quintana) and Bartonella henselae (formerly Rochalimaea henselae), have recently been recognized as agents of severe or fatal disease in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The development of infection with B. henselae in HIV-infected individuals has been associated with traumatic contact with cats (scratches or bites), and domestic cats have been identified as a major reservoir for this organism. Specific information regarding the transmission of B. henselae to humans is not yet available, bu

Effect of Chain Length on the Antimicrobial Properties of Dialkylresorcinols.

Dialkylresorcinols (DARs) are naturally occurring compounds produced in several species of the Photorhabdus and Pseudomonas bacterial genera, which are involved in modulating quorum-sensing in the producing organisms, as well as possessing significant antimicrobial properties. A range of dialkylresorcinols were synthesized, systematically varying the chain-lengths of the C-2 and C-5 alkyl chains, and the antimicrobial properties of the products assessed. Against two Staphylococcus test strains, medium-length alkyl chains (5-7 carbons) in both positions proved optimum for high antibiotic activi
