PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to assess whether the reliability of Touch Imprinting Cytology (TIC) of Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in skin melanoma patients allows intraoperative decisions regarding simultaneous radical lymphadenectomy to be made. Previous experiences have shown that the limit of TIC in extemporaneous diagnosis was represented by the minimal deposits of the tumor. Many current data seem to show that in this situation radical lymphadenectomy is no longer necessary, so we wondered if TIC could regain importance in the intraoperative management of these patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients with a primary melanoma below the knee may have lymphatic drainage to a sentinel node (SN) in the popliteal fossa. The purpose of this study was to analyze lymphatic drainage to this site and to describe clinical features and surgical management of SNs in the popliteal fossa.
METHODS: Patients with a primary melanoma below the knee presenting to Melanoma Institute Australia between 1992 and 2013 were analyzed. Those found to have a popliteal SN were evaluated. Data on imaging, SN biopsy, completion lymph node dissection, morbidity and follow-up were analyzed.

OBJECTIVE: Preoperative single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) imaging may aid in the localization of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) in cutaneous head and neck malignancy and has been rigorously evaluated for deep cervical lymph nodes. Sentinel lymph node (SLN) status has been advocated in several recently published articles as the single most valuable prognostic marker for melanoma, and of greater prognostic importance than more established parameters such as Breslow thickness. A careful examination of the evidence for these claims, however, indicates that they are not substantiated by the available data, are somewhat misleading and suggest misinterpretation of the statistical analysis of the papers to which they refer. We will examine the basis for these claims and show why they are invalid.

We describe a case of malignant melanoma on the ungual region of the index finger with which 6 sentinel lymph nodes were detected in the axillary basin. Of these nodes, 1 of 3 brachial nodes and 2 of 3 central axillary nodes showed micrometastasis.
