Recent advances in diagnostic tests for sexually transmitted diseases include the development of a synthetic Venereal Disease Research Laboratory reagent that will improve the sensitivity and stability of nontreponemal serologic tests for syphilis. A second generation user friendly and high throughput nucleic acid amplification test for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae has also been developed.

Hydatid disease is a parasitic disease caused by one of two species of Echinococcus: Echinococcus granulosus (cystic hydatid disease) or Echinococcus multilocularis (alveolar hydatid disease). Muscular echinococcosis accounts for 0.5% to 5.4% of all hydatid disease cases, with very little data on the incidence of muscular echinococcosis of the head and neck. We report a unique case of primary echinococcosis of the right sternocleidomastoid muscle in a 56-year-old man. To assess the role of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in malnutrition in African children, clinical examination and serologic tests were performed in 183 undernourished children at the Protestant Hospital of Dabou which is located in a semi-urban area of Cote d'Ivoire. Malnutrition was noted in 18% of children admitted to the Pediatric Department including 70.5% with marasmus. Serologic tests were positive for HIV in 46 of the 183 children, i.e. 25.1%. Diagnosis of infection caused by Chlamydia pneumoniae, a newly recognized respiratory pathogen, has proved difficult. Between July 1987 and April 1988, culture and serologic tests for C. pneumoniae were done on specimens from 49 patients with pneumonia seen at an Atlanta hospital emergency room.
