The sleep patterns of sixty patients suffering from mood disturbance, were studied, with mean age of 36.1 +/- 11.3 years ( 12 males, 48 females). These patients were submitted to two nights of nocturnal polysomnographic evaluation; the second night acquired data was employed in the statistics. The following parameters were analyzed: parameters of sleep continuity, parameters of sleep architecture, REM and non-REM sleep parameters. The patients were analyzed in accordance to depression severity, presence of sleep disorders and relevant mood disturbances. The most common diagnosis was dysthymia

Periodic leg movements during sleep (PMS) is a disorder frequently encountered in narcolepsy. In the present study, 12 narcoleptic patients (six with PMS and six without) were recorded in a sleep laboratory for 2 consecutive nights before and after treatment with gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) taken at bedtime for 1 month. Treatment resulted in decreased rapid eye movement (REM) sleep latency and increased REM efficiency without change in the total duration of REM sleep. GHB was associated with the appearance of pathological levels of PMS in patients who were unaffected before treatment. These re

Sleep patterns in two chronically "locked-in" patients were studied. The first patient had sleep activity similar to other quadriparetic patients with reduced physical activity. The second patient experienced no REM sleep and only short bursts of non-REM sleep. Clinical evidence suggested extension of his lesion dorsally into the pontine tegmentum. This correlates well with experimental evidence indicating that structures in the tegmental area are essential for normal sleep.

Hypnic headache (HH) occurs exclusively during sleep. Six attacks were recorded during nocturnal polysomnographic (PSG) monitoring of 10 HH patients. The PSG data obtained indicate that the attacks arose directly from sleep: four from non-REM and two from REM sleep. In no patient were the HH attacks found to show any close temporal relationship with sleep-related breathing abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: Persistent sleep disruptions following withdrawal from abused drugs may hold keys to battle drug relapse. It is posited that there may be sleep signatures that predict relapse propensity, identifying which may open new avenues for treating substance use disorders.
METHODS: We trained male rats (approximately postnatal day 56) to self-administer cocaine. After long-term drug withdrawal (approximately postnatal day 100), we examined the correlations between the intensity of cocaine seeking and key sleep features. To test for causal relationships, we then used behavioral, chemogeneti

Noradrenergic, serotonergic, and histaminergic neurons are continuously active during waking, reduce discharge during NREM sleep, and cease discharge during REM sleep. Cataplexy, a symptom associated with narcolepsy, is a waking state in which muscle tone is lost, as it is in REM sleep, while environmental awareness continues, as in alert waking. In prior work, we reported that, during cataplexy, noradrenergic neurons cease discharge, and serotonergic neurons greatly reduce activity. We now report that, in contrast to these other monoaminergic "REM-off" cell groups, histamine neurons are activ

Sleep problems are frequent in functional motor disorders (FMDs). Surprisingly, objective correlates of impaired sleep and its relationship to other comorbidities have been understudied, and no polysomnographic study is available. We aimed to map the polysomnographic parameters in the context of self-reported sleep and mood symptoms and search for comorbid sleep disorders in FMD and healthy controls. Thirty-seven patients (mean age [SD], 48.2 [10.6] years) with clinically definite FMD and 37 controls (48.6 [11.2] years) underwent structured medical and sleep history assessment, neurological ex

INTRODUCTION: Decreased need for sleep has been proposed as a core symptom of mania and it has been associated with the pathogenesis of Bipolar Disorder. The emergence of Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) as a new diagnostic has been controversial and much has been speculated about its relationship with the bipolar spectrum. REM sleep fragmentation could be a biomarker of affective disorders and it would help us to differentiate them from other disorders.
METHOD: Polysomnographic cross-sectional study of children with DMDD, bipolar disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Diso

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injuries (SCI) are associated with altered cardiovascular autonomic control (CAC). Sleep is characterized by modifications of autonomic control across sleep stages; however, no data are available in SCI subjects on CAC during sleep. We aim to assess cardiac autonomic modulation during sleep in subjects with SCI.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 27 participants with a neurological and radiological diagnosis of cervical (Cerv, n = 12, ie, tetraplegic) and thoracic SCI (Thor, n = 15, ie, paraplegic) and healthy subjects (Controls) were enrolled. Overnight polysomnographic (PSG) reco

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To update current knowledge regarding sleep disturbances and myotonic dystrophies so as to better understand if sleep symptoms may help in the early recognition of the two genetic subtypes: myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) and myotonic dystrophy type 2 (DM2).
RECENT FINDINGS: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), restless legs syndrome, periodic limb movements in sleep, hypersomnia, and REM sleep dysregulation are frequently described in DM1 patients. SDB does not always explain hypersomnia, but a central dysregulation of sleep-wake modulation is reported mainly in DM1. Sleep ap

Rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) is an REM sleep parasomnia characterized by enactment of dream content during REM sleep associated with loss of muscle atonia. RBD can be either idiopathic or secondary to drugs or other diseases. The best recognized association is with neurodegenerative diseases, namely alpha-synucleinopathies. RBD may represent the first feature of neurodegeneration and can be considered an early marker of these disorders. This review describes the main clinical, pathogenetic, and therapeutic features of RBD, pointing to its association with neurodegene

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) affects sleep.
METHODS: We prospectively followed up the sleep pattern of 23 opiate addicts when admitted to MMT and after 6 and 12 months of treatment. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, pain self-report questionnaires, urine for drug abuse, and one-night sleep polysomnography were assessed.
RESULTS: The baseline sleep indices (sleep time [5.5 ± 1.1 hours], sleep efficiency [80.6% ± 10.5%], rapid eye movement [REM] stage percent of sleep [14.3% ± 8.4%], percent of non-REM stage 3-4 [6.7% ± 8.6%], and Pittsburgh Sleep Qua

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia characterized by a history of recurrent nocturnal dream enactment behavior and loss of skeletal muscle atonia and increased phasic muscle activity during REM sleep: REM sleep without atonia. RBD and associated comorbidities have recently been identified as one of the most specific and potentially sensitive risk factors for later development of any of the alpha-synucleinopathies: Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and other atypical parkinsonian syndromes. Several other sleep-related abnormalities have recently

Sleep EEG patterns in 17 infants with cerebral malformations (4 months to 4 years of age) were studied throughout nocturnal sleep and the following results were obtained. Seven cases evidenced normal sleep/wakefulness EEG patterns that could be classified into 6 stages. Ten cases showed abnormal sleep EEG patterns as follows: absence of sleep spindles (n = 7) which included cases of absence of EEG patterns characteristic of wakefulness, NREM sleep and REM sleep (n = 5), no characteristic EEG patterns of stages 1-4 (n = 1) and stages W, 1, 2 and REM (n = 1) and the remaining cases with absence

15 subjects (mean age: 48.2 yr; 13 males, 2 females) with sleep apnea (12 obstructive, 3 central) were treated with an average dose of 2500 mg L-tryptophan (L-T) at bedtime. Comparison of pre- and post-drug polysomnograms showed significant improvement in obstructive sleep apnea but not with central sleep apnea. Most dramatic improvement is seen in subjects with obstructive sleep apnea in non-REM sleep only, but severity of apnea appears to be the most important factor determining improvement. L-T increased REM time and shortened REM latency but had no other significant effects on sleep archit

Previous research has demonstrated disturbances in sleep continuity in subjects with borderline personality disorders (BPD). Moreover, depression-like sleep abnormalities like reduced REM latency have been found in BPD subjects, even without comorbid major depression disorder. Yet it is still unknown what the effect is of co-morbid posttraumatic stress disorder on sleep continuity and dream content in BPD patients group. The present study compared 27 unmedicated female BPD subjects and healthy controls. The patients exhibited increased sleep fragmentation, increased REM density, and reduced RE

There are a number of sleep studies in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), in general including a heterogeneous population of patients. We aimed to study sleep in a population of selected ALS patients by investigating nocturnal polysomnography (PSG) characteristics in ALS patients with normal respiratory function tests and preserved diaphragmatic innervation. Ninety-two ALS patients were screened by percutaneous nocturnal oximetry (PNO). Eleven ALS patients with normal respiratory function tests, phrenic motor responses and preserved motor units on needle electromyography of the diaphragm, bu

Antidepressants may have sleep and autonomic side-effects. The acute and long-term effect of reboxetine (2 mg b.i.d.) on sleep and cardiac autonomic activity was compared with that of placebo in a single-blind study. Twelve patients affected by dysthymia underwent four polysomnographic studies at baseline (placebo); at night 3 (reboxetine; acute effect); at night 9 (reboxetine; intermediate-term effect); and at night 122 (reboxetine; chronic effect). After the first administration, reboxetine increased time awake after sleep onset, number of awakenings, percentage of stages 1 and 2 non-rapid e
