Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a chronic and highly prevalent condition that is associated with oxidative stress, inflammation, and fibrosis, leading to endothelial dysfunction, arterial stiffness, and vascular insulin resistance, resulting in increased cardiovascular disease and overall mortality rates. To date, OSA remains vastly underdiagnosed and undertreated, with conventional treatments yielding relatively discouraging results for improving cardiovascular outcomes in OSA patients. As such, a better mechanistic understanding of OSA-associated cardiovascular disease (CVD) and the develop

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a significant healthcare burden affecting approximately one billion people worldwide. The prevalence of OSA is rising with the ongoing obesity epidemic, a key risk factor for its development. While in-laboratory polysomnography (PSG) is the gold standard for diagnosing OSA, it has significant drawbacks that prevent widespread use. Portable devices with different levels of monitoring are available to allow remote assessment for OSA. To better inform clinical practice and research, this comprehensive systematic review evaluated diagnostic performances, study cost

With the current epidemic of obesity worldwide, the prevalence of various obesity-related diseases is constantly increasing. Obesity remains the strongest phenotypic risk factor in both obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In OSA, intermittent hypoxia-reoxygenation and sleep fragmentation, as a result of recurrent episodes of upper airway obstruction during sleep, may give rise to a plethora of metabolic derangements downstream. Intermittent hypoxia (IH) is postulated to be an important mechanistic trigger for potential systemic impact on organs or tissu

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been uncommonly reported in dogs and is often associated with brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). OSA independent from BOAS has been rarely reported. Treatment of OSA with ondansetron has only been reported in one dog and has not been reported in a breed commonly affected by BOAS. Here, we report the case of a pug with episodes of OSA despite appropriate treatment of BOAS. Administration of ondansetron led to a rapid and near-complete resolution of the clinical signs, with a follow-up of 3 mo. OSA independent of BOAS should be considered as a di

A 47-year-old farm worker with diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and hyperuricemia was referred to our hospital for a 3-month history of fever and malaise. He had no respiratory tract or abdominal symptoms, skin rashes, or joint pain. There was no change to his regular medication or pesticide exposure. Blood tests and echocardiography revealed no abnormalities. Whole-body computed tomography revealed a fatty liver; however, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis was excluded. We diagnosed the patient with functional hyperthermia. He had a history of snoring and weight gain, and we suspected the obstruct

PURPOSE: Hypertension is a common comorbidity in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), in which dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system plays an integral part. Chemoreflex is essential for ventilatory control and cardiovascular activity. This study aimed to determine whether central chemosensitivity was increased in OSA patients with hypertension and the potential role of the autonomic nerve activity in this relationship.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 77 men with OSA were included in this cross-sectional study. We measured hypercapnic ventilatory response (HCVR) by the rebreathing method unde

Rationale: As the mechanism that links obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with the regulation of inflammatory response is not well known, it is important to understand the inflammasome activation, mainly of NLRP3 (nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor 3). Objectives: To assess the NLRP3 activity in patients with severe OSA and to identify its role in the systemic inflammatory response of patients with OSA. Methods: We analyzed the NLRP3 activity as well as key components of the inflammasome cascade, such as adaptor molecule apoptosis-associated speck-like protein, caspase-1, Gasde
