This study was designed to describe the sleep profile in a cohort of children 5-15 y with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) using polysomnography (PSG) and Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) and Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The controls included age- and gender-matched healthy controls. A total of 30 cases of IGE and matched 30 controls were enrolled in study. The global CSHQ score [58.8 (10.8) vs. 32.3 (4.1); p < 0.01] and PSQI score [2.4 (1.6) vs. 0.9(0.3); p < 0.01] was significantly higher among children with IGE as compared to controls. REM sleep duration was signif

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review is to answer three questions: 1) How are chronic pain severity and pain duration affected in patients with chronic pain and sleep disturbances that occur simultaneously? 2) What are common comorbidities and pain-related symptoms seen in patients with chronic pain and sleep disturbances? and 3) What are potentially effective pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatment options for both conditions?
METHODS: Ovid Medline and PubMed were searched. Search terms included sleep wake disorder, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, treatment outcome, psychotherapy, co

The importance of the cerebellum in sleep disorders, and vice versa, is only beginning to be understood. Advanced neuroimaging modalities have revealed cerebellar changes in both common and rare sleep disorders. Sleep disorders in those with genetic cerebellar disease, such as spinocerebellar ataxia, Friedreich ataxia, Joubert syndrome, and ataxia-telangiectasia, include excessive daytime sleepiness, restless legs syndrome, periodic limb movements of sleep, obstructive apnea, central apnea, and rapid eye movement behavior disorder. Sleep medicine is an important and under-recognized part of th

Sleep disorders are so common in multiple system atrophy that they should be considered an integral part of the disease. Sleep fragmentation occurs in more than half of the patients, with sleep onset and sleep maintenance insomnia. Periodic leg movements of sleep are also common, although they are generally asymptomatic. REM sleep behavior disorder, a parasomnia in which the patient presents vigorous movements associated with intense dreaming dreaming during REM sleep, is detected polysomnographically in almost all the patients with variable severity. Nocturnal stridor is produced by obstructi

According to ICSD criteria, sleep paralysis (SP) occurs at least once in a lifetime in 40-50% of normal subjects. Variation in the reported incidence could be attributed to the difference in the expression in survey or an influence of cultural background. Some factors assumed to affect the appearance of SP include psychological, biological, developmental, and genetic influences. Sleep onset REM period (SOREMP) is one of the factors which is 'assumed to be related to SP in normal subjects' as well as narcoleptic patients. We conducted an experiment for eliciting SOREMP and SP. Our result indica

REM sleep behaviour disorder (RSBD) is a recently described parasomnia characterised by a history of excessive nocturnal motor activity and absence of muscle atonia during REM sleep. Only limited literature is available on this condition. The exact prevalence is unclear, but recent studies suggest it might not be an uncommon condition. The elderly are more often affected and there is a male preponderance. While transient RSBD can be seen after taking certain drugs or during drug withdrawal, the chronic type is usually idiopathic or associated with an underlying degenerative neurological condit

Literature is reviewed indicating that aging is characterized by changes in circadian rhythms and sleep quality. The most marked change is an attenuation of amplitude. An advance of phase, a shortening of period, and a desynchronization of rhythms are also evident. The mechanisms underlying these changes are unknown. However, age-related changes in the retina, suprachiasmatic nucleus, and pineal gland seem relevant along with behavioral changes such as a reduction in physical activity and exposure to photic stimulation. Changes in circadian rhythms are frequently associated with a reduction in

OBJECTIVE: Systemic inflammation is commonly observed in idiopathic chronic pain conditions, including temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). Trait positive affect (PA) is associated with lower inflammation in healthy controls, but those effects may be threatened by poor sleep. The associations between PA with proinflammatory cytokine activity and potential moderation by sleep in chronic pain are not known. We thus investigated the association between PA and circulating interleukin-6 (IL-6) and moderation of that association by sleep in a sample of women with TMD and sleep difficulties.

This paper provided an overview of the knowledge on the relationship between temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and the main sleep conditions and disorders of dental interest, namely, sleep bruxism (SB), sleep apnea, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It emerged that although the topic of SB as a possible detrimental factor for the stomatognathic structures has been the most studied, evidence is growing that SB, obstructive sleep apnea, and GERD, all belong to a circle of mutually interacting sleep disorders and conditions that, in turn, may be associated with TMDs. The pathophysiolog

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is related to medical and social problems, including mental disorders, physical diseases, poor quality of life, and so forth. According to the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, Third Edition, diseases that result from EDS are narcolepsy type 1, narcolepsy type 2, idiopathic hypersomnia, hypersomnia due to a medical disorder, and others. EDS is usually treated using amphetamine-like central nervous system stimulants or modafinil and its R-enantiomer, armodafinil, wake-promoting compounds unrelated to amphetamines; a variety of new drugs are unde

OBJECTIVES/BACKGROUND: Youth with continuous headache are understudied, are presumed to be more psychosocially complex and impaired than youth with remitting headache presentations, and are at risk for poor clinical outcomes. Given links between sleep and pain, characterizing sleep among youth with continuous headache may inform intervention targets. This study was undertaken to describe the sleep characteristics of a sample of treatment-seeking adolescents with continuous headache and contextualize these data by comparing the sleep-wake behavior of youth with continuous headache to youth with

BACKGROUND: Excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy are among the symptoms of narcolepsy, a sleep disorder caused by the loss of hypocretin/orexin (HCRT/OX) neurons placed into the Hypothalamus (LH). Several treatments for managing narcolepsy include diverse drugs to induce alertness, such as antidepressants, amphetamine, or modafinil, etc. Recent evidence has shown that cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychotropic derived from Cannabis sativa, shows positive therapeutic effects in neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson´s disease. Furthermore, CBD provokes alertness and enhances wake-rel
