A low-grade dedifferentiated liposarcoma in the retroperitoneum of a 52-year-old woman is described. The excised specimens contained six nodules of lipoma-like well-differentiated liposarcoma and a nodule of dedifferentiated liposarcoma. The latter was composed predominantly of loosely arranged, benign-appearing spindle cells and fat cells. A small number of cells with irregularly shaped nuclei were scattered. There were no mitotic figures. The fat cells showed slight variation of size and shape, and a few multivacuolated lipoblasts were found. The spindle cell areas occupied approximately 60%

A 70-year-old man was referred for an abnormal chest shadow. Enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed a well-circumscribed lung tumor of 53 mm in diameter in the left upper lobe with slight enhancement. Positron emission tomography-CT showed a high maximum standardized uptake value for the tumor but no metastasis in the lymph nodes or other organs. Although a definitive diagnosis could not be made by transbronchial biopsy, the tumor was highly suspected to be malignant based on the radiological findings, and a left upper lobectomy with mediastinal lymph nodes dissection was performed for def

Fibroblastic reticulum cells (FBRCs) belong to a major subtype of stromal support cells in the lymphoid system and rarely give rise to tumors. We report a case of fibroblastic reticulum cell tumor arising in the spleen. The tumor was clinically and radiologically mistaken for a metastatic deposit in the spleen. Microscopically the tumor was composed of spindle cells arranged in fascicles and storiform pattern. The cells had oval to elongated vesicular nuclei and pale eosinophilic cytoplasm with indistinct cell borders. There were admixed inflammatory cells, including large numbers of plasma ce

Adenomyoepithelioma is a rare, microscopically distinctive tumor of the skin. This article explores an example that presented in the inguinal area in a 29-year-old woman, mimicking adenopathy. Histopathologically, the tumor included two different areas: a cystic area consisting of tubules and glands in hyalinized stroma and a solid area showing marked myoepithelial proliferation. The diagnosis of adenomyoepithelioma was confirmed by the presence of a biphasic immunoprofile, with expression of cytokeratins and epithelial membrane antigen in the glandular epithelium and with expression of viment

Plexiform schwannoma is a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor composed exclusively of Schwann cells arranged in a plexiform pattern. Most plexiform schwannomas are skin tumors and visceral localization is very rare. To our knowledge, there are six cases localized in visceral organs. We describe herein the first known case of plexiform schwannoma of the rectum resected by endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). A 77-year-old woman presented with a short history of anal pain. Sigmoidoscopy demonstrated a submucosal tumor, 20 mm in diameter, of the rectum below the peritoneal reflection (Rb). We

Plexiform angiomyxoid myofibroblastic tumor (PAMT) is a recently described mesenchymal tumor of the stomach. We report the first case of PAMT in Korea. A 52-yr-old man underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy due to dyspepsia for 2 yr. There was a submucosal mass with small mucosal ulceration in the gastric antrum. The tumor measured 3.5 × 2.3 cm in size and showed multinodular plexiform growth pattern of bland-looking spindle cells separated by an abundant myxoid or fibromyxoid matrix rich in small thin-walled blood vessels. The tumor cells were negative for CD117 (c-KIT), CD34 and S-100 protein,

Rare malignant tumor of the salivary gland, a myoepithelial carcinoma, arose de novo in the right parotid gland. The initial tumor was composed predominantly of myoepithelial cells. Subsequently the tumor recurred three times, with infiltration of the bones of the cranial base. Histological examination showed sarcomatoid neoplasm composed of malignant spindle cells with high mitotic rate and perineural invasion. There was no involvement of cervical lymph nodes. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated myoepithelial differentiation: tumor cells were positively stained with vimentin, alpha smooth muscl

Angioleiomyoma is a benign mesenchymal neoplasm composed of smooth muscle cells and thick-walled vessels. It is usually found in the skin of the lower extremities. Angioleiomyoma is a very rare tumor among the ever-expanding repertoire of growth variants described in benign uterine leiomyoma. More rare is a solitary tumor of the broad ligament. Thus angioleiomyoma of the broad ligament is an extremely rare benign tumor of the female pelvis. In this report a 52-year-old woman with a one-year history of abdominal pain was admitted to our hospital. Gynaecological and ultrasonography exams showed

We present a case of unusual localization of inflammatory fibroblastic tumor in the terminal ileum, cecum, and ascending colon in a 7-year-old child. Segmental resection of the terminal ileum, cecum, and ascending colon with a tumor mass up to 6 cm in diameter was performed. Pathohistological examination of biopsy specimen was performed on routine hematoxylin-eosin sections, as well as immunohistochemically with primary antibodies to CD3, CD20, CD68, factor VIII, vimentin, smooth muscle actin, desmin, cytokeratin and S-100 protein, and k and l light chains. The tumor was composed of highly vas

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is an uncommon mesenchymal solid tumor commonly documented in children and young adults. Here, we report a case of IMT in colon confirmed pathologically after laparoscopic anterior resection. A 35-year-old man presented with anal bleeding after defecation for 2 weeks. Colonoscopy demonstrated a mass with shallow ulceration in the central area and irregular margin accompanied by intact mucosa in the descending colon. Computer tomography showed a well-demarcated and homogenous solitary mass in the descending colon. We performed laparoscopic anterior resec

A case of monotypic variant of epithelioid angiomyolipoma (AML) observed in a 62-year old woman is reported. The patient complained of abdominal fullness caused by a huge left renal mass without evidence of tuberous sclerosis complex. Imaging studies showed a left renal mass with an area showing hemorrhage and necrosis. The left renal mass, spleen and pancreatic tail were removed en bloc transabdominally. The resected tumor weighed 1200 g and showed focal necrosis and hemorrhage. Microscopically, the tumor was composed exclusively of atypical polygonal cells with copious eosinophilic cytoplasm

We report an unusual case of a large solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) in the retroperitoneum. A 53-year-old man was referred to our hospital for surgical treatment of a swelling in the right flank with dull pain. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) and echograms showed a large encapsulated tumor compressing the right kidney and liver. At laparotomy, the tumor was found to be encapsulated but fixed to the capsule of the right kidney within a small area. Therefore, complete removal was achieved. The resected specimen was an encapsulated elastic hard tumor, 14 x 13 x 10 cm in size. Immunohistochemical

Collagenous fibroma is an uncommon benign soft tissue lesion that has a wide anatomic distribution. We describe a case of a collagenous fibroma that appeared in the left soft and hard palate of a 37-year-old woman as a 5.0-cm solitary, firm nodule. Microscopically, it was composed of stellate or spindle-shaped cells embedded in hypovascular fibrous stroma. Entrapment of fat was focally identified at the edges. Mitotic figures and tumor necrosis were absent. Tumor cells were immunopositive for vimentin, and a few cells were positive for alpha-smooth muscle actin. Tumor extracellular matrix was

The authors describe a 47-year-old woman with intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) extending into the right ventricular cavity. This rare entity is a neoplasm originating from smooth muscle of the uterus, with vermiform extensions into the inferior vena cava. The patient underwent a one-stage operation under simultaneous sternotomy and laparotomy, and radical excision of the tumor was successfully achieved with use of normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass. Although this tumor is histologically benign, it sometimes extends into the cardiac cavity and causes sudden death due to incarceration into the

Light microscopic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural features of an unusual polypoid tumor of endocervix are reported. Numerous polypeptide hormone and amine-producing endocrine cells were disclosed. Main conventional characteristics were the architectural growth pattern, with infolding glands giving rise to small secondary glands, the hypermucinous benign-appearing epithelium of endocervical type, and, possibly, the stromal smooth muscle. Ultrastructural analysis showed a highly differentiated tumor. Glandular elements were surrounded by a basal lamina. Mucinous cells, several endocrin

Myofibrosarcoma is a rare neoplasm that occurs mainly in the head and neck region and extremities of middle-aged patients. It often appears as a low-grade sarcoma and rarely metastasizes. We report the case of a 47-year-old male patient with a malignant mesenchymal pulmonary tumor affecting almost the entire lower left lobe. Clinically suggestive for a lung carcinoma, the tumor showed typical features of a myofibrosarcoma. A major spindle cell component was observed being positive for smooth-muscle actin, calponin, and vimentin, while stainings for desmin, h-caldesmon, alkaline phosphatase (AL

A 36-year-old woman visited our department because of back pain. Chest CT showed the 35 x 20 mm mass to be located in the left posterior mediastinum. Neurogenic tumor or pulmonary sequestration was suspected. We followed the tumor for 2 years, chest CT revealed an increase in size. En bloc resection of the tumor was performed. The tumor originated in the posterior mediastinum, protruded into the thoracic cavity and adhered to the left lower lobe and invaded the diaphragm, measuring 65 x 50 x 25 mm in size. This tumor was diagnosed pathologically as desmoid tumor which showed proliferation of s

In September 2002, a 24-year-old woman complaining dysphagia with an abnormal shadow in a chest X-ray was admitted to our hospital. Endoscopic ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a hypo-echoic, low-density mass surrounding the middle esophagus. Bronchofiberscopy and gastrofiberscopy showed compression from the outside of bronchus and esophagus. No ulcer formation was found. Transbronchial aspiration biopsy and esophageal biopsy showed no malignancy. After 14 cm thoractomy, extirpation of the tumor was performed. The solid tumor was 10.5 x 3.0

Leiomyoma are benign tumors of smooth muscle origin. Uterine leiomyoma are extremely common; leiomyoma in extraperitoneal spaces, however, are not. There have been several documented cases of leiomyoma in retroperitoneal spaces, though the majority of them have been in the posterior retroperitoneum. Here, we report a patient presenting with a large, firm suprapubic mass, initially thought to be a fundal uterine fibroid. On surgical excision, it was found to be the extremely rare finding of a benign leiomyoma in the anterior retroperitoneum or space of Retzius.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is defined as a very rare mesenchymal tumor of histologically and immuno-histochemically distinctive perivascular epithelioid cells. PEComa in the colon is very rare, with only a few reported cases so far. Because of its rarity, the clinical features and biological behavior of PEComa in the colon have yet to be established. A 16-year-old female patient with PEComa in the transverse colon was referred to our hospital for rectal bleeding. Laboratory data showed a hemoglobin level of 6.6 g/dL, WBC of 8,800/mm(3), and platelet count of 191,000/mm(3). Co
