Bipolar I disorder, social support and work.

OBJECTIVES: This article reports the estimated lifetime prevalence of bipolar I disorder in the household population and describes characteristics of people of working age (25 to 64) affected by this disorder. The relationship between social support and employment status is examined in people with the disorder. DATA SOURCE: Data are from the 2002 Canadian Community Health Survey: Mental Health and Well-being. ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES: Weighted frequencies and cross-tabulations were used to estimate the prevalence of bipolar I disorder. Multiple logistic regression modeling was used to examine f

A Single Test to Study Social Behavior and Repetitive Self-grooming in Mice.

The ability to recognize and interact with members of the same species is essential for social communication. Investigating the neural substrates of social interest and recognition may offer insights into the behavioral differences present in disorders affecting social behavior. Assays used to study social interest in rodents include the 3-chamber test, a partition test, and a social interaction test. Here, we present a single protocol that can be used to quantify the level of social interest displayed by mice, the ability to distinguish between different individual mice (social recognition),

Diminished socially selective neural processing in 5-month-old infants at high familial risk of autism.

The social and communicative difficulties that characterize autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are considered the most striking feature of the disorder. Research has reported that individuals with ASD show abnormalities in the brain regions associated with the processing of social information. Importantly, a recent study using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) found the first evidence of atypicalities in the neural processing of social information in 4- to 6-month-old infants at high familial risk of ASD. These findings provide an important step in the search for early markers of ASD a

Motor Impairments Correlate with Social Deficits and Restricted Neuronal Loss in an Environmental Model of Autism.

BACKGROUND: Motor impairments are amongst the earliest and most consistent signs of autism spectrum disorders but are not used as diagnostic criteria. In addition, the relationship between motor and cognitive impairments and their respective neural substrates remain unknown. METHODS: Here, we aimed at determining whether a well-acknowledged animal model of autism spectrum disorders, the valproic acid model, displays motor impairments and whether they may correlate with social deficits and neuronal loss within motor brain areas. For this, pregnant female mice (C57BL/6J) received valproic acid

Social Media Addiction and Its Association With Psychological Distress and Academic Performance Among Libyan Medical Students: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Social media addiction (SMA) is considered a major public health issue due to the increasing negative effects on academic performance, social behavior, and psychological well-being. The risk of addiction is heightened by students' use of social media platforms for communication, relationships, entertainment, or academic purposes. The current work assessed the examined social media addiction as a determinant of psychological distress and academic performance among Libyan future medical doctors.  Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, and a self-reported questionnaire was utilized using

Double-blind, sham-controlled, pilot study of trigeminal nerve stimulation for autism spectrum disorder.

Trigeminal nerve stimulation (TNS) is a minimal-risk, noninvasive neuromodulation method with growing evidence of efficacy across psychiatric conditions. However, its safety and potential effects in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remain underexplored. This exploratory pilot study aimed primarily to evaluate the safety and tolerability, and secondarily to explore changes in ASD-related symptoms - including impairments in social communication and reciprocity, attention, executive functioning, emotional regulation, sleep, and sensory processing - in children with ASD, and to examine associated ch

A common genetic variant in the neurexin superfamily member CNTNAP2 is associated with increased risk for selective mutism and social anxiety-related traits.

BACKGROUND: Selective mutism (SM), considered an early-onset variant of social anxiety disorder, shares features of impaired social interaction and communication with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) suggesting a possible shared pathophysiology. We examined association of a susceptibility gene, contactin-associated protein-like 2 (CNTNAP2), for ASDs and specific language impairment with SM and social anxiety-related traits. METHODS: Sample 1 subjects were 99 nuclear families including 106 children with SM. Sample 2 subjects were young adults who completed measures of social interactional anxi

Community engagement and education: addressing the needs of South Asian families with genetic disorders.

Consanguineous marriage is common among the South Asian heritage community in the UK. While conferring social and cultural benefits, consanguinity is associated with an increased risk of autosomal recessive disorders and an increase in childhood death and disability. We have previously developed a genetic service to address the needs of this community. We report the extension of this service to include community-based initiatives aimed at promoting understanding of genetic issues related to consanguinity and improving access to genetic services. Our approach was to develop integrated clinical,

"It's nothing personal": understanding barriers to relational harm reduction practices during inpatient hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: People who use drugs (PWUD) have a higher incidence of infectious complications that require medical interventions only available in hospital settings. Hospitalizations for PWUD are also more likely to result in patient directed discharge (PDD) before completing medical treatment. Stigma directed at PWUD pressurizes and shapes clinical encounters, leading to poor communication between patient and provider. We explore how the relational philosophy of harm reduction - the premise that building relationships rooted in compassion and respect, as opposed to a transactional encounter - c

The richness of social stimuli shapes developmental trajectories: Are laboratory mouse pups impoverished?

The early environment is crucial for brain and behavior development. In particular, social experiences involving the mother and the peers are critical in shaping the adult individual. Though animal models of psychiatric disorders have widely investigated the relevance of the mother-offspring interaction, the peer interaction has so far been rarely studied. The communal nest (CN) is an innovative experimental strategy that favors a more comprehensive investigation of the long-term effects of both components. CN is a rearing condition employed by up to 90% of mouse females in naturalistic settin

Siblings in families of children with chronic disorders: a model of risk and protective factors.

OBJECTIVE: We empirically tested a family systems model's ability to explain variance in psychosocial adjustment among siblings of children with chronic developmental and physical disorders (CDs). The model included the impact of CD severity, family social support, parental mental health, and parent-sibling communication quality. We hypothesized that family social support would moderate the relationship between CD severity and parent mental health, and that sibling-reported communication quality with their parents would mediate the relationship between parent mental health and sibling psychoso

Assessment of student's knowledge and awareness of autism spectrum disorder.

UNLABELLED: Developmental disorder as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) gives a specific image significantly deviating from the norm in the areas of social and communicative functioning of the child, including the ability to establish and maintain interpersonal relationships. It is difficult to determine the occurrence of autism in the world accurately. However, the WHO estimates one diagnosis in 160 children in the world. AIM: The aim of this study was to find how student's knowledge and awareness of autism spectrum disorder looks like. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To assess awareness of autism was

Developmental pathways of social avoidance across adolescence: the role of social anxiety and negative cognition.

It is argued that the adolescent onset of social anxiety disorder (SAD) may be partly attributable to an increase in avoidance of social situations across this period. The current cohort-sequential study investigated developmental pathways of social avoidance in adolescence and examined the explanatory role of social anxiety and negative cognitive processes. A community sample of youth (9-21 years, N=331) participated in a four-wave study. Trajectory analyses revealed two pathways: an increased avoidance pathway and a low avoidance pathway. The pathways were hardly distinguishable at age 9 and

Pathways to social anxiety: the role of reinforcement sensitivities and emotion regulation.

Past research has demonstrated a strong relationship between threat sensitivity and social anxiety; however, the relationship between reward sensitivity and social anxiety is less clear. Further, the role that emotion regulation (ER) may play in the expression of social anxiety disorder (SAD) is rarely considered. The current study tested whether two emotion regulation strategies (emotional suppression and cognitive reappraisal) mediated associations between threat sensitivity and reward sensitivity and social anxiety in a community sample (402 adults, 78% female; Mage=32.49, S.D.age=11.53). Mental health and social support among public safety personnel.

BACKGROUND: Social support may be a protective factor for the mental health of public safety personnel (PSP), who are frequently exposed to potentially psychologically traumatic events and report substantial post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) symptoms. Research examining perceived social support and its association with PTSD and MDD in different PSP categories (e.g. firefighters, paramedics) is limited. AIMS: To examine differences in perceived social support across PSP and determine whether perceived social support is associated with differences in rate

16p11.2 Deletion Syndrome Mice Display Sensory and Ultrasonic Vocalization Deficits During Social Interactions.

Recurrent deletions and duplications at chromosomal region 16p11.2 are variably associated with speech delay, autism spectrum disorder, developmental delay, schizophrenia, and cognitive impairments. Social communication deficits are a primary diagnostic symptom of autism. Here we investigated ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in young adult male 16p11.2 deletion mice during a novel three-phase male-female social interaction test that detects vocalizations emitted by a male in the presence of an estrous female, how the male changes its calling when the female is suddenly absent, and the extent to

[Suicidality in people with autism without intellectual impairment].

People with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) relatively often experience suicidality. This seems partly related to comorbid disorders such as depression, ADHD and addiction. In addition, people with ASD are relatively vulnerable due to limitations in social communication, for example for bullying behavior of others. This, too, plays a role in suicidality, as well as having a strong tendency to ruminate and difficulty regulating emotions. Particularly in women with ASD, we see increased suicidality; possibly because they have more comorbid disorders, but also because of their tendency to camoufl

Local social environmental factors are associated with household food insecurity in a longitudinal study of children.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity is a significant public health problem in North America and elsewhere. The prevalence of food insecurity varies by country of residence; within countries, it is strongly associated with household socioeconomic status, but the local environment may also play an important role. In this study, we analyzed secondary data from a population-based survey conducted in Québec, Canada, to determine if five local environmental factors: material and social deprivation, social cohesion, disorder, and living location were associated with changes in household food insecurity over

Neighborhood social cohesion and physical disorder in relation to social isolation in older adults: racial and ethnic differences.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood factors of social isolation have been understudied, hindering efforts to reduce social isolation at the neighborhood level. This study aims to investigate the longitudinal effects of neighborhood social cohesion and physical disorder on social isolation in community-dwelling older adults, as well as to examine whether race/ethnicity moderates the neighborhood-isolation relationship. METHODS: We used 11-year data from the National Health and Aging Trend Study, a longitudinal national study of Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 and older. Social isolation was measured throu

Borderline Personality Disorder.

Borderline personality disorder is a psychological disorder characterized by a pervasive pattern of instability in affect regulation, impulse control, interpersonal relationships, and self-image. Borderline personality disorder may be present in up to 6.4% of adult primary care visits, which is fourfold higher than in the general population. Borderline personality disorder is underdiagnosed and most patients who have it also have additional psychiatric conditions. Individuals with borderline personality disorder have an underlying vulnerability to emotional hyperarousal states and social and i
