Understanding how systems thrive against the odds is increasingly important in an era of accelerating ecological and social change. Bright spots, cases that outperform expectations under local constraints, offer a lens for learning from success within broader patterns of decline. Yet progress in this field has been limited by inconsistent definitions, fragmented methods and the absence of an integrative framework for systematic learning and application. Here we synthesize more than 70 studies spanning ecology, conservation, resource use, food production and sustainability science to assess how

Although music has been associated with increased prosocial behavior, the underlying mechanisms for music-facilitated social benefits are not known. We test the hypothesis that chord progressions promote social bonding between dyads by shared temporal alignment of frequency spectra. Two musical conditions were presented to 20 pairs of participants (equal numbers of males and females), one with either a structured chord or predictable progression and the other with an unstructured and unpredictable composition of the same notes. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy signals were recorded simult

The COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by a fraught immunopolitics in which the health and interests of powerful social groups have been privileged, supported and valued while members of disadvantaged groups have been positioned as both more vulnerable and expendable. This article identifies logics about immune selves ('immune logics') among marginalised Australian sub-groups who have historically been subjected to discrimination and social stigma. The study involved 30 semi-structured interviews with LGBTIQA + people and people living with the blood-borne viruses hepatitis B, hepatitis C

Thioridazine and visual screening procedures are effective in reducing the stereotypic behaviors of individuals with mental retardation. A double-blind, placebo-controlled study, using alternating treatments within a multiple-baseline across subjects design, was conducted to assess the effects of two doses of thioridazine (1.25 and 2.5 mg/kg/day) and visual screening, alone and combined, on stereotypy and social behavior of three individuals with profound mental retardation. Functional analyses did not show demand, alone, social attention, or differential reinforcement conditions to maintain t

BACKGROUND: Quality of life (QoL) is a central priority in dementia care, yet most nursing homes (NHs) in Canada rely on clinical indicators that do not capture the emotional and social dimensions of residents’ well-being. Little is known about how clinical, social, and NH factors jointly shape QoL for residents living with dementia. This study examined the associations of resident social characteristics, clinical conditions, and NH factors with resident QoL. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included publicly funded NHs in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova

This paper has examined the research questions and strategies used by those who attempt to study social development from a cognitive-developmental orientation. It began by pointing to the need to integrate the descriptive work done by social-cognitive developmental researchers with some of the approaches taken by clinical and social psychologists in studying the same general phenomenon: interpersonal relations. An issue-by-stage social-cognitive map developed on the basis of both conceptual and empirical investigations was described, as were some of the properties which defined these stages. F

Societal ideas and explanations of albinism at the local level in Tanzania are conceived in terms of family history, social relations, economic status, moral-religious positions, global-local flows of information and humanitarian actions on behalf of people with the congenital condition. This paper aims to show how the subjectivities of people with albinism in Tanzania are shaped and re-shaped through local moral conceptions as well as globalizing (bio)medical explanations of albinism. An exemplary case study of a 28-year-old woman, plus episodes from the lives of seven other informants with t

This paper provides a critical review of the prevalence of social phobia in European countries, a description of associated disability and burden and of clinical correlates and risk factors associated with social phobia. On the basis of a comprehensive literature search we identified 21 community studies and two primary care studies. The median lifetime and 12-month prevalence rates of social phobia in community samples referring to DSM-III-R and DSM-IV criteria were 6.65% and 2.0%, respectively. Younger individuals showed the highest rates, and women were more frequently affected than men. So

BACKGROUND: Unmet social needs (including housing, transport and social inclusion) contribute substantially to health outcomes, especially for people with long-term health conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Whether assessment of unmet social needs occurs in MS clinical care is unclear. This study aims to (1) understand current practices, (2) identify barriers and enablers to social needs assessments in MS care, and (3) explore the feasibility of social needs screening tools.
METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study comprised focus groups and interviews with clinicians, carers and

Persistent deficits in social behavior, motor behavior, and behavioral flexibility are among the major negative consequences associated with exposure to ethanol during prenatal development. Prior work from our laboratory has linked moderate prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) in the rat to deficits in these behavioral domains, which depend upon the ventrolateral frontal cortex (Hamilton et al., 2014) [20]. Manipulations of the social environment cause modifications of dendritic morphology and experience-dependent immediate early gene expression in ventrolateral frontal cortex (Hamilton et al., 201

Nigerian social workers in health care settings have been actively involved in the treatment of women in northern Nigeria who suffer from childbirth injury during obstructed labor. The patient population studied suffers from vesicovaginal fistula (VVF), a debilitating and chronic condition whereby a woman leaks urine uncontrollably and experiences grave social consequences. Crisis intervention, social rehabilitation, fighting stigma, and discharge planning similar to the American professional model were functions of the social workers in addressing the needs of this patient population. Implica

Migrant rights and justice movements in Canada have arisen within an increasingly hostile political and discursive environment marked by restrictive immigration policies, precarious labor regimes, and the racialized marginalization of migrant communities. Yet these conditions have also generated various forms of collective resistance that contest the exclusionary boundaries of citizenship, labor rights, and national belonging. Drawing on a case study of a migrant domestic workers' organization and Migrant Spring rallies in Vancouver, this article examines how migrant workers and their allies o

Several recent studies have investigated the mental health consequences of structural racism. Structural racism has been defined as "macro-level societal conditions that limit opportunities, resources, and well-being of less privileged groups on the basis of race/ethnicity and/or other statuses, including but not limited to, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability status, social class or socioeconomic status (SES), religion, geographic residence, national origin, immigration status, limited English proficiency, physical characteristics, or health conditions."1 Researchers have hypothes

The master protocol for studying the impact and process of implementation of weekly iron-folic acid supplementation under program conditions is described. Pilot projects guided by the protocol were carried out in the Philippines, Vietnam, and Cambodia, where anemia rates are high and different socioeconomic and cultural conditions exist. Each country utilized the same supplement but adapted implementation processes to their specific conditions. Social marketing and community mobilization were considered to be essential tools for sustainability.

Medical, dental and psychiatric conditions may cause dysfunction of the mouth in health and disease. The principle of clinical assessment of the patient, which includes a thorough assessment of the physical, social and psychological factors, is of paramount importance. This paper has attempted to describe some of the more common conditions affecting the mouth in general practice, and to underline important causes of pain which can occur in the face arising from conditions in the mouth.

BACKGROUNDS: Social skills are frequently impaired in neurodevelopmental disorders and genetic conditions, including 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Although often assessed with questionnaires, direct assessment provides a more valid estimate of the constructs. Role-plays (i.e., simulates situational settings) therefore appear to be an appropriate indicator of social skills in daily life.
METHODS: This co-registered study involved 53 individuals with 22q11DS, 34 individuals with ASD, and 64 typically developing (TD) peers aged 12-30 years. All particip

Early life stress, such as child abuse or neglect, is a risk factor for the development of psychopathologies characterized by abnormal social and emotional behaviors. In rodents, long-lasting changes in stress coping and emotional behavior can be induced by separating pups from their mother. We used maternal separation (MS; 3h daily on postnatal days 1-14) to test whether early life stress alters acquisition and extinction of social fear in adult male mice as studied in a specific model of social fear, i.e., in the social fear conditioning paradigm. We show that MS facilitated extinction of so
