Influence of pH on copper-zinc competitive adsorption by a sandy soil.

Copper and zinc adsorption and interaction were studied at different pH levels in a sandy soil (Gleyic Podzol) to understand heavy metal behaviour in soils with acidification hazards, polluted by the use of sewage sludge with high content of Cu and Zn. Soil samples were treated by solutions of Cu and Zn as nitrate salts with concentration levels up to 30 mg l(-1) in a Ca(NO3)2 background. More Cu than Zn was adsorbed, mainly specifically adsorbed. Copper and Zn in the exchange complex varied with soil solution pH. Adsorbed Cu and Zn increased with pH and as pH increased, more Cu than Zn was sp…

Prevalence and intensity of soil-transmitted helminthiasis in the city of Portoviejo (Ecuador).

We studied the stool samples of 151 school children in a district of the city of Portoviejo (Ecuador) in order to determine the prevalence and intensity of soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) and their relationships with anthropometric indices. The samples were analyzed with the semiquantitative Kato-Katz technique and the intensity of infections was categorized as light, moderate or high according to the thresholds set by the World Health Organization. Prevalence of soil transmitted helmintiasis was 65% (92 out of 141 collected samples), Ascaris lumbricoides was the most common STH (63%) fol…

Remediation of TCE contaminated soils by in situ EK-Fenton process.

The treatment performance and cost analysis of in situ electrokinetic (EK)-Fenton process for oxidation of trichloroethylene (TCE) in soils were evaluated in this work. In all experiments, an electric gradient of 1V/cm, de-ionized water as the cathode reservoir fluid and a treatment time of 10 days were employed. Treatment efficiencies of TCE were evaluated in terms of the electrode material, soil type, catalyst type, and catalyst dosage and granular size if applicable. Test results show that graphite electrodes are superior to stainless steel electrodes. It was found that the soil with a high…

What is the role of stimulant laxatives in the management of childhood constipation and soiling?

BACKGROUND: Constipation is extremely common in childhood and may lead to overflow soiling/encopresis. Standard treatment of the more severe case is to empty the bowels of impacted faeces by the use of oral or rectal laxatives and then maintain regular bowel movements by the continuation of osmotic and stimulant laxatives. OBJECTIVES: The objective of the review was to determine the effect of stimulant laxative treatment in children with chronic constipation who may also suffer from soiling / encopresis. SEARCH STRATEGY: The Cochrane database of randomised controlled trials was searched. Add…

Comparison among soil Series and extraction methods for the analysis of trifluralin.

Accurate analytical procedures are needed to improve understanding of the fate and transport of trifluralin, a chemical widely used as a herbicide. Analytical determination of trifluralin is challenging due to its hydrophobic, yet volatile, character and its tendency to degrade into numerous metabolites. In this research, efficient analytical methods for fortified and field-incurred soils were developed for simultaneous quantitation of trifluralin, I [2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzenamine, CAS Registry No. 1582-09-8; CAS Registry No. have been provided by the author], a trifl…

Survival of Escherichia coli O157 in a soil protozoan: implications for disease.

Intra-protozoal growth of bacterial pathogens has been associated with increased environmental survival, virulence and resistance to biocides and antibiotics. Using laboratory microcosms we have shown that Escherichia coli O157 survives and replicates in a common environmental protozoan, Acanthamoeba polyphaga. As protozoa are widely distributed in soils and effluents, they may constitute an important environmental reservoir for transmission of E. coli O157 and other pathogens.

Soil decreases the dermal penetration of phenol in male pig in vitro.

Skin is a primary route of exposure to phenol, a major chemical found in hazardous waste sites. The effect of soil adsorption on the dermal bioavailability of phenol was assessed by applying [14C]phenol alone (P) or with sandy (P-S) or clay (P-C) soil to dermatomed male pig skin samples in flow-through diffusion cells. Maximum penetration of P-S and P-C was significantly decreased by one-half and by two-thirds, respectively, compared to P. Furthermore, the penetration of phenol into receptor fluid and the amount bound to skin were significantly lower when phenol was adsorbed to either soil ver…

Effects of trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene and dichloromethane on soil biomass and microbial counts.

Trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene and dichloromethane in concentrations of 10, 100, and 1000 micrograms per 100 g brown soil (dry weight) had different effects on soil microorganisms. The ATP content of the soil biomass decreased significantly in the first and second week of incubation when 100 micrograms of trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene were added to the soil, and it was strongly reduced during the two months of the experiment duration when 1000 micrograms of the individual chlorinated solvents under test was added. Similar inhibitory effects could be observed with soil fungi…

[Mechanism of the maintenance of the infective capacity of soil in a natural focus of leptospirosis].

The radioisotope modeling of the processes of the release of leptospires into the soil and the daily measurements of the radiation doses revealed that leptospires were regularly added by individual carriers, as well as by a group of carriers, into common infected spots on the territory of the infection focus. The frequency with which leptospires were added by a carrier into different infected spots varied: during 7 days leptospires were added 7 times and more into 16% of the spots, up to 5 times into 49% of the spots; into 35% of the spots no leptospires were added. The microscopic and bacteri…

Influence of salts on the microbial activity in arid and simi-humid soils.

The influence of salt mixtures consisting of Ca (H2PO4)2, trace elements, CaSO4, CaCO3, Na2CO3, NaCl, and K2SO4 in different combinations on the nitrifying power, evolution of carbon dioxide, and the total number of bacteria was studied in arid soils (sandy and alluvial) and semi-humid ones (chernozem and rendzina). Salt mixtures comprising either monocalcium phosphate or sodium chloride showed highly inhibiting action on the studied microbial activities in sandy, alluvial, and chernozem soils, while monocalcium phosphate stimulated the heterotrophs of rendzina. Trace elements favoured the aut…

Calcium oxalate: occurrence in soils and effect on nutrient and geochemical cycles.

Whewellite and weddellite, calcium salts of oxalic acid, have been found in the litter layer of several different soils, indicating that oxalate is a major metabolic product of fungi in natural environments. The presence of oxalate in soil solution speeds weathering of soil minerals and increases the availability of nutrients to vegetation.

Cadmium, lead and zinc accumulation in soils near a smelter complex.

Concentrations of nitric acid extractable Cd, Pb and Zn in surface soils, predominated by partially decomposed litter, from 15 sites within 9.7 km of the lead-zinc smelter complex at Trail, British Columbia, Canada, attained 36.1, 12123, and 1394 ppm but averaged 17.8, 2607, and 571 ppm, respectively. Although underlying mineral soils contained smaller concentrations of all three metals, the relative immobility of Pb and mobility of Zn were observed. A close association between Cd and Zn concentrations was reflected by significant correlations but variation of Pb concentration in surface soils…

Microbial activity mediates the contrasting effects of biochar combined with nitrogen or phosphorus on soil respiration and easily oxidizable organic carbon across soil depths in Cunninghamia lanceolata plantations.

Biochar can alter soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics by changing nutrient availability and microbial activity, but whether its effects differ when combined with nitrogen or phosphorus and how these responses vary over time and soil depth remain unclear. We conducted a field experiment in Cunninghamia lanceolata plantations with five treatments: control (CK), biochar alone (B), biochar with nitrogen (BN), biochar with phosphorus (BP), and biochar with both nitrogen and phosphorus (BNP). Soil samples were collected from the 0-10, 10-20, and 20-40 cm layers at six and eighteen months after treatm…
