Mercury (Hg) concentrations in four commercial fish species (Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, Spiny Eel Mastacembelus armatus, African catfish Clarias gariepinus, and Sahar Tor putitora), were investigated in Lake Phewa, Nepal. Mean values of total mercury (THg mg kg(-1), ww) in these fishes were 0.02, 0.07, 0.05, and 0.12 respectively. Methylmercury contributed 82 % of THg. The distribution and translocation of mercury (Hg) was studied in the Paglia River ecosystem, located downstream from the inactive Abbadia San Salvatore mine (ASSM). The ASSM is part of the Monte Amiata Hg district, Southern Tuscany, Italy, which was one of the world's largest Hg districts. Free-base, nickel(II), zinc(II) and iron(III) mono(4-aniline-ethynyl)biphenylporphines (AEBPPs) were synthesized and their electro-polymerization reactions were studied. To clarify how the location of distal histidine affects the activation process of H2O2 by heme proteins, we have characterized reactions with H2O2 for the L29H/H64L and F43H/H64L mutants of sperm whale myoglobin (Mb), designed to locate the histidine farther from the heme iron. A nonradioactive cell-based rubidium (Rb(+)) efflux assay for functional analysis of native and recombinant ion channels has been developed. Cells are first loaded with rubidium, a tracer for potassium, and after channel activation, rubidium distribution between intracellular and extracellular space is determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy.
