Predictors of Susceptibility to Noise and Speech Masking Among School-Age Children With Hearing Loss or Typical Hearing.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of masker type and hearing group on the relationship between school-age childr … r speech masker (TTS). Aided audibility through children's hearing aids was calculated based on the Speech Intelligibility Index (SII) for all children wearing hearing aids. Linear mixed effects models were used to examine the contribution of group, age, vocabulary, working memory, and attention to individual differences in speech recognition thresholds in each masker. …

Longitudinal Developmental Outcomes of Children With Prelingual Single-Sided Deafness With and Without a Cochlear Implant and Recommendations for Follow-Up.

OBJECTIVES: Children with prelingual single-sided deafness (SSD) have difficulty understanding speech in noise and sound localization. They also have an increased risk of problems with their language and cognitive development. Moreover, untreated SSD can lead to cortical reorganization, that is, the aural preference syndrome. Providing these children with a cochlear implant (CI) at an early age may support improved outcomes across multiple domains. This longitudinal study aimed to identify those aspects of development that are especially at risk in children with SSD, and to determine whether e

Characteristics of Frequency Resolution and Speech Perception Using Bone Conduction on Different Human Facial Parts.

In conventional bone-conduction (BC) devices, a vibrator is typically attached to the mastoid process of the temporal bone or the condyle process of the mandible. However, BC-sound presentations to facial parts such as the nose and cheek have also been investigated recently. As the face is the among the most complex structures of the human body, transmission of sounds using BC on different facial parts are likely to show different perception and propagation characteristics than those presented to conventional parts. However, the characteristics of BC sound presented to different part of the fa

Reducing interaural tonotopic mismatch preserves binaural unmasking in cochlear implant simulations of single-sided deafness.

Binaural unmasking, a key feature of normal binaural hearing, can refer to the improved intelligibility of masked speech by adding masking that facilitates perceived separation of target and masker. A question relevant for cochlear implant users with single-sided deafness (SSD-CI) is whether binaural unmasking can still be achieved if the additional masking is spectrally degraded and shifted. CIs restore some aspects of binaural hearing to these listeners, although binaural unmasking remains limited. Notably, these listeners may experience a mismatch between the frequency information perceived

Written language as a window into residual language deficits: a study of children with persistent and residual speech and language impairments.

Previous work has suggested that, because writing is a late-acquired and complex skill, it may be a particularly sensitive index of language difficulties in children. Evidence in support of this view was obtained in a study contrasting 161 normally-developing control children aged from 7.5 to 13 years with 75 twin children of the same age who either had specific speech-language impairments, or were co-twins of affected children. Written narratives were elicited from children using a sequence of five photographs depicting a simple story, and were analysed for grammatical complexity and accuracy

[Risk of noise-induced hearing loss caused by radio communication? Audiologic findings in helicopter crews and pilots of propeller airplanes].

The affects of noise on the human inner ear have been well known for a long time, and measures to prevent occupational noise-induced hearing … e is only of limited effectiveness. While pilots with normal hearing show only little impairment of speech intelligibility, those with noise-induced hearing loss show substantial impairment that varies in proportion to their hearing loss. Results of audiometrical screening in Finnish schoolchildren.

The results of pure tone screening in Finnish schoolchildren in the Helsinki University Central Hospital District (Finland) during the years 1978-81 were assessed. 40,824 children were screened at a screening level of 20 dB (HL) (ISO). 11.4% of the children failed the first screening procedure. A control screening in these children was performed at 2- to 4-week intervals. A total of 1563 children did not pass the second screening (3.8% of the whole screened population). 1485 schoolchildren were then referred to an otologist. 32% of the children referred had normal hearing. In total, 2.5% of th

Voice problems following limited surgical excision.

The published literature contains relatively few references to vocal rehabilitation for persons with partial laryngectomy. Articles on various types of surgery indicate that many individuals develop satisfactory voice following limited surgery, particularly supraglottic procedures. An informal questionnaire completed by 10 larngologists who had had substantial experience with sub-total laryngectomy revealed that an average of 25 percent of their patients with laryngeal cancer receive partial laryngectomy. Lesions limited to the epiglottis, supraglottic areas or one vocal cord are regularly tre

Speech perception processes and fitting of hearing aids.

A model of speech perception is modified to take into account the adaptational factors involved in speech perception and learning. In connection with fitting of hearing aids, the model permits a description and identification of factors influencing the immediate and long-term benefits of a hearing aid. Various aspects of the model in connection with the rehabilitation process using hearing aids are considered and a new step-wise adjusting procedure for the assessment of hearing aids is proposed. Our observations imply that speech audiometry is a poor indicator of the long-term benefit of a hea

Patterns of cognitive and fine motor deficits in a case of Dandy-Walker continuum.

Cerebellar vermian hypoplasia in the context of Dandy-Walker complex is a relatively common disorder associated with a variety of cognitive and behavioral deficits in addition to impairment in motor control. Few studies, however, have examined the neuropsychological profiles of children with isolated hypoplasias of the cerebellum. Herein, we report a 6-year-old girl with Dandy-Walker continuum presenting with mild mental retardation and an inability to produce intelligible speech, despite adequate comprehension of single items and simple instructions. She was able to articulate vowels but not

Translation and validation of the Intelligibility in Context Scale into Sinhala for adolescents in Sri Lanka with cleft lip and palate.

The Intelligibility in Context Scale (ICS) is a parent-report screening tool used to measure parents' perceptions of children's functional intelligibility. This tool has been translated into over 60 languages and found to have a good reliability and validity. The purpose of the current study was to translate the ICS into Sinhala (the ICS-SIN), the main language spoken by the Sinhalese people in Sri Lanka, and to validate it with both typically developing (TD) children and children with repaired cleft lip and/or palate (CLP). The translation process followed the forward-backward-forward method.

Acoustic markers of prosodic boundaries in Spanish spontaneous alaryngeal speech.

Prosodic information aids segmentation of the continuous speech signal and thereby facilitates auditory speech processing. Durational and pitch variations are prosodic cues especially necessary to convey prosodic boundaries, but alaryngeal speakers have inconsistent control over acoustic parameters such as F0 and duration, being as a result noisy and less intelligible than normal speech. This case study has investigated whether one Spanish alaryngeal speaker proficient in both oesophageal and tracheoesophageal speech modes used the same acoustic cues for prosodic boundaries in both types of vo
