[Current diagnostics and treatment of ankle sprains in German].

BACKGROUND: Ankle sprains are one of the most frequent injuries of the musculoskeletal system. The injury pattern determines the treatment and are crucial for the outcome. Nonoperative treatment is commonly recommended for isolated injuries of the lateral ligaments but no standard strategy exists in combined ankle ligament injuries. The goal of this national survey was to achieve an overview about the current diagnostic strategies and common treatment concepts in Germany. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All members of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU) were invited to partici

Contralateral thalamocortical connectivity is related to postural control in the uninvolved limb of older adults with history of ankle sprain.

BACKGROUND: Sensorimotor brain connectivity is often overlooked when determining relationships between postural control and motor performance following musculoskeletal injury. Thalamocortical brain connectivity is of particular interest as it represents the temporal synchrony of functionally and anatomically linked brain regions. Importantly, adults over the age of 60 are especially vulnerable to musculoskeletal injury due to age-related declines in postural control and brain connectivity. RESEARCH QUESTION: Is there a relationship between thalamocortical connectivity and static postural cont

Acute ankle injuries: association between sprain severity and ancillary findings.

UNLABELLED: Miranda et al. reported a correlation between the significance of injuries to osseous, chondral, tendon, and ligamentous tissues in participants with low-grade versus high-grade acute ankle sprains. They demonstrated that participants with high-grade ankle sprains presented with shorter calcaneonavicular distances and increased rates of structural abnormalities compared to those with low-grade sprains. Special attention should be paid to acute ankle sprains in emergency settings to avoid failure in detecting severe injuries that could lead to chronic pain, impairment, or instabilit

Biceps muscle injury associated with non-invasive automatic blood pressure monitoring.

This case describes a young, healthy woman who developed a grade 1 biceps muscle strain after the use of automatic non-invasive blood pressure monitoring during an elective surgical procedure. She was treated conservatively with simple analgesia, physiotherapy and a sling for comfort. Follow-up conducted 1 week later revealed occasional soreness, but she had almost returned to her baseline activity. The patient made a full recovery without any residual symptoms by the end of 6 weeks. This case highlights the importance of careful monitoring to ensure that routine use of blood pressure cuffs do

Physiotherapists' knowledge of and adherence to evidence-based practice guidelines and recommendations for ankle sprains management: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Lateral ankle sprain (LAS) is a common and burdensome injury. However, the quality of its management is scant. Nowadays, physiotherapy management of musculoskeletal diseases seems to be generally not based on research evidence. Studies that investigated the knowledge-to-practice gap in LAS management are yet to be carried out. Therefore, this research investigated physiotherapists' knowledge of and adherence to LAS Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) and recommendations. METHODS: A cross-sectional study based on an online survey structured in three sections. The first section coll

How Common is Subsequent Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction or Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome After Ankle Sprain Injury?

Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) and tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) are debilitating conditions reported to occur after ankle sprain due to their proximity to the ankle complex. The objective of this study was to investigate the incidence of PTTD and TTS in the 2 years following an ankle sprain and which variables are associated with its onset. In total, 22,966 individuals in the Military Health System diagnosed with ankle sprain between 2010 and 2011 were followed for 2 years. The incidence of PTTD and TTS after ankle sprain was identified. Binary logistic regression was used to ident

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Sports Musculoskeletal Injuries.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a well-established treatment for a variety of conditions. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the administration of 100% oxygen breathing in a pressure vessel at higher than atmospheric pressure (1 atmosphere absolute = 101 kPa). Typically, treatment is given daily for between 1 and 2 h at pressures of 2.0 to 2.8 ATA, depending on the indication. Sporting injuries are often treated over 3 to 10 sessions. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been documented to be effective and is approved in 14 medical indications by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, including,

Distal radial torus fracture in an adult. A new type of occult wrist fracture?

Torus or buckle fractures typically affect children who have suffered indirect minor wrist injuries. They are axial compression-type metaphyseal fractures of cortical and cancellous bone, which are stable and their treatment therefore consists in immobilisation of the joint for three to four weeks. We present an atypical case of distal radius torus fracture in a 19-year-old adult male, which has not been previously reported in adults and can be considered a new type of occult fracture. Knowledge of this possibility is mandatory to be able to make a differential diagnosis of wrist sprain in adu
