In the past, most cases of bacterial infection-related glomerulonephritis (IRGN) occurred in children following streptococcal upper respiratory tract or skin infections and were called postinfectious GN. Over the past 3 decades, there has been an important shift in epidemiology, bacteriology, and outcome of IRGN. A significant percentage of cases now target adults, particularly the elderly or immunocompromised. Because adult infections are often ongoing at the time of diagnosis, the term IRGN appears more appropriate. The sites of infection in adult IRGN are more heterogeneous than in children

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) remains a major human pathogen. Traditionally, MRSA infections occurred exclusively in hospitals and were limited to immunocompromised patients or individuals with predisposing risk factors. However, recently there has been an alarming epidemic caused by community-associated (CA)-MRSA strains, which can cause severe infections that can result in necrotizing fasciitis or even death in otherwise healthy adults outside of healthcare settings. In the US, CA-MRSA is now the cause of the majority of infections that result in trips to the emergency r

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The bacteriology of complicated parapneumonic effusions has changed in recent decades, but the causative organisms often remain obscure in up to 40% of cases. Recently, new molecular methods have become available which might help clinical management and improve our understanding of this condition. In this review, we will consider the current bacteriological spectrum of pleural infection and look at some of the new molecular methods.
RECENT FINDINGS: Hospital-acquired pleural infection exhibits a different bacteriology than pleural infection originating in the community. It

Therapeutic results are given for 342 patients treated with various doses of aztreonam in 20 studies. One hundred sixty-five patients had urinary tract infections; 40 of these patients were bacteremic. Favorable clinical response was reported for 91.5% of the patients, and only one bacteremic patient failed to respond to treatment. Pneumonia was treated in 99 patients, 11 of whom were bacteremic; 86 responded favorably to treatment. In 22 patients with bacteremia of unknown focus, only one failure was noted. Of 368 bacterial isolates, 323 were eliminated during treatment. Pseudomonas aeruginos

Staphylococci are uncommon causes of febrile urinary tract infections (UTIs) in children and are often dismissed as contaminants in urine cultures. Data on their clinical significance in pediatric febrile UTIs are scarce. This study aimed to characterize the clinical features of children treated for a first febrile staphylococcal UTI at Hôpital Universitaire des Enfants Reine Fabiola (HUDERF) in Brussels. We performed a retrospective observational study including children aged < 16 years diagnosed with a first febrile staphylococcal UTI between January 2010 and December 2023. Twenty-five child

Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic Gram-positive bacterial pathogen that causes a wide variety of infectious diseases, including S. aureus bacteremia (SAB). Recent studies showed that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a risk factor for SAB, as RA patients appear to be more susceptible to SAB and display higher degrees of disease severity or complications, such as osteoarticular infections. On the other hand, Porphyromonas gingivalis is a Gram-negative bacterial oral pathogen, which is notable for its implication in the etiopathogenesis of RA due to its unique citrullinating enzyme PPAD and i

Staphylococcus aureus are potent human pathogens possessing arsenal of virulence factors. Staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP) and respiratory infections mediated by staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) are common clinical manifestations. Many diagnostic techniques are based on serological detection and quantification of SEB in different food and clinical samples. Aptamers are known as new therapeutic and detection tools which are available in different ssDNA, dsDNA and protein structures. In this study, we used a new set of ssDNA aptamers against SEB. The methods used included preparation of a d

Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) are important causative agents in gastroenteritidis and food poisoning cases. They are serologically grouped into five major classical types, i.e., SEA, SEB, SEC, SED, and SEE. In addition, new SEs, such as SEG through SEM, have recently been identified and characterized. In an attempt to survey the distribution of classical and new SEs in organisms responsible for staphylococcal infections in Taiwan, we developed PCR primers for the genes that define the SEK, SEL, and SEM types. Bacterial strains other than sek, sel, and sem Staphylococcus aureus, including s…

Subacute thyroiditis is generally believed to be of viral origin, and infection is also suspected of playing a role as a triggering factor in the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroid diseases. We have measured a broad spectrum of bacterial and viral antibodies in paired sera of 32 patients with thyroid disease of recent onset. The data indicate a preceding infection in 14 (44%) of the patients, enterobacterial in 5, streptococcal in 4 and staphylococcal in 2. A viral infection was suggested in 6 patients, in each case caused by different agents; 3 of them also showed evidence of a bacterial infe

Toxic shock syndrome may result from postoperative staphylococcal wound infection. A case that occurred following a breast biopsy procedure for benign disease is reported. There was progressive multiple-system organ failure, and the patient was near death within 24 hours after a biopsy specimen of a benign fibroadenoma was obtained during an outpatient procedure. Early recognition and aggressive resuscitation are essential to prevent mortality after outpatient surgery complicated by toxic shock syndrome.

This study was performed to investigate the inhibitory effects of 16 different plant-derived polyphenols on the toxicity of staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA). Plant-derived polyphenols were incubated with the cultured Staphylococcus aureus C-29 to investigate the effects of these samples on SEA produced from C-29 using Western blot analysis. Twelve polyphenols (0.1-0.5 mg/mL) inhibited the interaction between the anti-SEA antibody and SEA. We examined whether the polyphenols could directly interact with SEA after incubation of these test samples with SEA. As a result, 8 polyphenols (0.25 mg/m

The infection of bacterial organisms generally causes cell death to facilitate microbial invasion and immune escape, both of which are involved in the pathogenesis of infectious diseases. In addition to the intercellular infectious processes, pathogen-produced/secreted enterotoxins (mostly exotoxins) are the major weapons that kill host cells and cause diseases by inducing different types of cell death, particularly apoptosis and necrosis. Blocking these enterotoxins with synthetic drugs and vaccines is important for treating patients with infectious diseases. Studies of enterotoxin-induced ap

Milk and dairy products are frequently contaminated with enterotoxigenic Staphylococcus aureus, which is often involved in staphylococcal food poisoning. The distribution of genes encoding staphylococcal enterotoxins (SE) in S. aureus isolated from bovine, goat, sheep and buffalo milk and dairy products was verified by the presence of the corresponding SE production. A total of 112 strains of S. aureus were tested for SE production by immuno-enzymatic (SEA-SEE) and reversed passive latex agglutination (SEA-SED) methods, while multiplex-PCR was applied for SE genes (sea, sec, sed, seg, seh, sei
