[Validation of the French version of the health-related quality of life questionnaire for adult strabismus (AS-20)].

INTRODUCTION: A growing number of articles have shown the negative impact of strabismus on self image, relationships with others and professional life. The AS-20 is a standardized questionnaire in English measuring the psychosocial impact of strabismus in adults. The goal of this study is to validate the AS-20 in the French language. PARTICIPANTS: Three hundred and ninety one patients took part in the study: 131 had strabismus (group 1), 128 other ocular diseases (group 2) and 132 "normal" patients (group 3). RESULTS: The AS-20 scale showed good psychometrical properties in 2 or 4 dimensions…

Presence of fusion in albinism after strabismus surgery augmented with botulinum toxin (type a) injection.

It is commonly accepted that albino patients with strabismus rarely achieve binocularity and depth perception after strabismus surgery. The presence of retino-geniculo-cortical misrouting, a hallmark of the visual system in albinism, does not necessarily cause total loss of binocular vision, however, not even in albino patients with strabismus. Recently some degrees of stereopsis were reported in albinism patients with minimal clinical nystagmus, if any, in the absence of strabismus. It is possible that patients with albinism and strabismus have binocular visual potential which appears after s…

Health-related quality of life measures (HRQoL) in patients with amblyopia and strabismus: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) measures are used in healthcare to help inform clinical decision-making and policy-making decisions. A number of disease-specific or condition-specific measures have been developed and applied in ophthalmology; however, their use in the specific fields of amblyopia and strabismus are not as established. The purpose of this study is to identify and discuss specific HRQoL instruments that may be used in the investigation and management of patients with amblyopia and/or strabismus. METHODS: A systematic literature review was undertaken in N…

Linkage of bilateral convergent strabismus with exophthalmus (BCSE) to BTA5 and BTA18 in German Brown cattle.

Bilateral convergent strabismus with exophthalmus (BCSE) is a widespread inherited eye defect in several cattle populations. Its progressive condition often leads to blindness in affected cattle and decreases their usability. Furthermore, the German animal welfare laws prevent breeding with animals whose progeny are expected to be affected by genetic defects. Identifying genes involved in the heredity of BCSE should lead to insights into the molecular pathogenesis of this eye disease and permit the establishment of a genetic test for this disease. A whole-genome scan for 10 families containing…

Changes in the structure of neuronal connections in the visual cortex of cats with experimentally induced bilateral strabismus.

The spatial distribution of neuronal connections in cortical field 17 was studied in cats with experimentally induced bilateral convergent strabismus on postnatal days 10-14. Horseradish peroxidase was applied microiontophoretically to individual columns of neurons in fields 17 and 18 and retrograde-labeled cells were identified in both hemispheres. Increases and decreases in the extent of intra-hemisphere connections were seen in the mediolateral direction (projections of the horizontal meridian of the visual field). Most columns showed increases in inter-hemisphere connections in this same d…

[Diagrammatic presentation of the results of strabismus examination in the various diagnostic positions of gaze need standardization].

We have found that there is no consistent opinion about the recording of the results of ocular deviations in various diagnostic positions of gaze, as well as for head tilt tests to the right and to the left in textbooks, manuscript and hospital medical records in China. For the sake of convenience in analysis and diagnosis of ocular deviations, it is necessary to have a unified opinion in recording these results. In accordance with the habitual diagrammatic presentation of the results of ocular deviations in the various diagnostic positions of gaze, as well as for head tilt tests to the right

Scleral perforations in strabismus surgery: incidence and role of prophylactic cryotherapy--a clinical and experimental study.

PURPOSE: To determine the incidence of scleral perforations in strabismus surgery in a tertiary centre setting in India and to evaluate the risk or benefit, if any, of prophylactic cryotherapy following experimental scleral perforations in rabbits. METHODS: Seven hundred eyes of patients that had undergone strabismus surgery (1121 procedures) were examined postoperatively by indirect ophthalmoscopy. In the experimental component, 20 rabbit eyes were perforated with a 6-0 polyglactin suture. In each rabbit, one eye acted as a control while the other eye received a 20 seconds application of pro…

The role of vergence adaptation in recovery of binocular single vision (BSV) following sensory strabismus.

Vergence adaptation is an important element of comfortable binocular single vision and probably contributes to the high incidence of orthophoria or small angles of heterophoria in the normal population. Where binocular single vision has been absent for a period of time, restoration of good visual acuity appears to enable the vergence adaptation mechanism to become active again. A case is presented in which a moderate to large angle of deviation rapidly 'disappeared' once good visual acuity was restored and the disparate images could be fused. Known factors concerning vergence adaptation are di

A primate model of anterior segment ischemia after strabismus surgery. The role of the conjunctival circulation.

Fornix conjunctival incisions in strabismus surgery may provide partial protection against anterior segment ischemia by preserving the perilimbal conjunctival-Tenon's circulation, which is disrupted with limbal conjunctival incisions. Six adult cynomolgus monkeys underwent tenotomies of three or four rectus muscles by making limbal conjunctival incisions in one eye and fornix incisions in the other. Iris fluorescein angiography and slit-lamp biomicroscopy were used to monitor changes. The eyes that had limbal incisions exhibited more severe anterior segment ischemic changes than the eyes that …

Effects of convergent strabismus on spatio-temporal response properties of neurons in cat area 18.

Single-cell recording experiments were carried out to determine whether rearing kittens with surgically induced convergent strabismus (esotropia) alters the development of receptive field (RF) properties of neurons in area 18. In agreement with previous work on kittens with divergent strabismus (exotropia), there was a marked loss of binocularly driven cells in area 18 of esotropic cats. In contrast to the striate cortex of strabismic cats, the spatial properties of area 18 neurons, including receptive-field size and spatial frequency tuning, did not differ from those in normal controls. On th…

Effects of strabismus on responsivity, spatial resolution, and contrast sensitivity of cat lateral geniculate neurons.

Rearing cats with esotropia is known to cause a number of deficits in visual behavior tested through the deviated eye. These include a loss of orienting response to stimuli presented in the nasal visual field of the deviated eye, a reduction in visual acuity, and a general reduction in contrast sensitivity at all spatial frequencies. To assess the involvement of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) in these deficits, we measured the following: 1) the visual responsiveness of lamina A1 cells with peripheral (more than 10 degrees from area centralis) receptive fields in three esotropic and three

Differential Fixation and Eye Alignment Patterns in Strabismus with and Without Amblyopia Across Viewing Conditions.

Fixation instability (FI) and vergence instability (VI) in amblyopia and strabismus are associated with disrupted physiologic fixation eye movements (FEMs). This study examined how viewing conditions affect FEM patterns in strabismic subjects with and without amblyopia. FEMs of the non-dominant/amblyopic and dominant/fellow eyes were recorded using video-oculography during both-eye viewing (BEV), fellow/dominant-eye viewing (FEV/DEV), and amblyopic/non-dominant-eye viewing (AEV/NDEV) in strabismic subjects with amblyopia (SA, n = 56), without amblyopia (S, n = 19), and controls (C, n = 25). FI…

Strabismus surgery outcomes in pediatric patients with developmental delay: a meta-analysis and systematic review.

Purpose: Strabismus management in developmental-delayed children presents challenges, as outcomes are unpredictable due to factors such as limited neuroplasticity, poor central control, and subnormal binocular potential. This meta-analysis evaluates the outcomes of strabismus surgery in these children. Methods: Eligible studies published before 28 May 2023 were extracted from MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane, PsychINFO, and gray literature. A meta-analysis was performed using STATA 14.0. The comparator group were children without developmental delays who underwent strabismus surgery. Fixed-ef…
