Sexual orientation and substance abuse treatment utilization in the United States: results from a national survey.

This study examined substance abuse treatment utilization across three dimensions of sexual orientation (identity, attraction, and behavior) in a large national sample of adults in the United States. Prevalence estimates were based on data collected from the 2004-2005 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions. The sample consisted of 34,653 adults 20 years and older, and represented a population that was 52% women, 71% White, 12% Hispanic, 11% African American, 4% Asian, and 2% other race/ethnicities. An estimated 2% of the target population self-identified as lesbian, ga

Intraspinal release of substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide during opiate dependence and withdrawal.

The antibody microprobe technique was used to study the release of immunoreactive substance P and immunoreactive calcitonin gene-related peptide within the lower lumbar spinal cord of anaesthetized spinalized cats pretreated twice daily for 3.5 days with increasing doses of morphine hydrochloride (2-20 mg/kg, i.p.). Both peptides were released in the region of the substantia gelatinosa during noxious cutaneous thermal stimulation or high-intensity electrical stimulation of a hind limb nerve. Intravenous administration of naloxone increased the nociceptive excitation of lumbar dorsal horn neuro

The relationship between discrimination and substance use disorders among lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the associations between 3 types of discrimination (sexual orientation, race, and gender) and substance use disorders in a large national sample in the United States that included 577 lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults. METHODS: Data were collected from wave 2 of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, which used structured diagnostic face-to-face interviews. RESULTS: More than two thirds of LGB adults reported at least 1 type of discrimination in their lifetimes. Multivariate analyses indicated that the odds of past-year substance us

[Gambling disorder in Japan].

Gambling disorder is a psychiatric disorder characterized by persistent and recurrent problematic gambling behavior, associated with impaired functioning, reduced quality of life, and frequent divorce and bankruptcy. Gambling disorder is reclassified in the category Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders in the DSM-5 because its clinical features closely resemble those of substance use disorders, and gambling activates the reward system in brain in much the same way drugs do. Prevalence of gambling disorder in Japan is high rate because of slot machines and pachinko game are very popular in

The impact of benzodiazepine use on methadone maintenance treatment outcomes.

The purposes of this study were to examine predictors of benzodiazepine use among methadone maintenance treatment patients, to determine whether baseline benzodiazepine use influenced ongoing use during methadone maintenance treatment, and to assess the effect of ongoing benzodiazepine use on treatment outcomes (i.e., opioid and cocaine use and treatment retention). A retrospective chart review of 172 methadone maintenance treatment patients (mean age = 34.6 years; standard deviation = 8.5 years; 64% male) from January 1997 to December 1999 was conducted. At baseline, 29% were "non-users" (pas

Association between discontinuing chronic opioid therapy and newly diagnosed substance use disorders, accidents, self-inflicted injuries and drug overdoses within the prescribers' health care system: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Prescribers are commonly confronted with discontinuing opioid therapy among patients prescribed chronic opioid therapy (COT). This study aimed to measure the association between discontinuing COT and diagnoses of substance use disorders (SUDs) and opioid-related adverse outcomes (AOs). DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: United States Veterans Healthcare Administration. PARTICIPANTS: Veterans with chronic pain on COT who discontinued opioid therapy were compared with those continuing COT using data from fiscal years 2009 to 2015. MEASUREMENTS: Newly diagnosed s

Nicotine use in suicides: a case-control study.

PURPOSE: Despite of higher rates of substance-related disorders in psychiatric patients and suicides than in the general population, there is no clear specificity to the relationship between nicotine use and other psychiatric disorders for suicide risk. METHODS: One hundred and sixty-three suicides (mean age 49.8 +/- 19.3 years; 64.4% males; using psychological autopsy method) and 396 control persons (mean age 51.6 +/- 17.0 years; 55.8% males) were assessed with a standardised semi-structured interview including SCID-I and SCID-II (for DSM-IV). Suicides and controls were compared in terms of …

The biological and psychosocial factors of substance use and related outcomes in the Philippines: a systematic review.

Given the impact of substance use disorder on public health and social development, synthesizing evidence can inform policies and programs tailored to Filipinos. This review included studies on substance-related disorders among Filipinos from 2006 to 2026. The search drew on four databases, namely PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and HERDIN, using keywords related to substance use and related outcomes and the Philippines. Data from eligible studies were extracted and compared using narrative synthesis and the biopsychosocial framework. A total of 338 publications were identified. After excluding…

Mental health facilities with ketamine infusion therapy in the United States in 2020: Co-location of dual diagnosis mental health and substance use disorder treatment.

Ketamine is an anesthetic that has been identified as an effective therapy for depressive disorders and related symptoms. Some studies have identified ketamine as having the potential to reduce substance use among individuals with a substance use disorder (SUD)-alongside psychotherapy. Further, SUDs often co-occur with depressive disorders. Using the National Mental Health Services Survey 2020, this study examined a national sample of N = 134 U.S. mental health treatment facilities that provide ketamine infusion therapy (KIT) to identify their geographic locations; availability of individual,

Major depression, alcohol and drug use disorders do not appear to account for the sexually transmitted disease and HIV epidemics in the southern United States.

OBJECTIVE: Sexually transmitted disease (STD) and HIV infection are occurring at epidemic rates in the southern region of the United States. Depression and substance use disorders are associated with sexual risk behavior, so we investigated whether regionwide societal rates of major depression or substance use disorders could explain the higher southern rates. METHODS: Data came from two surveys, the National Longitudinal Alcohol Epidemiologic Survey (NLAES; 1991-1992, N = 42,862) and the National Epidemiologic Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC; 2001-2002, N = 43,093). Psychopathy traits explain variance shared between features of substance use disorders and violence.

BACKGROUND: There is a substantial research literature on identifying risk and protective factors for violence perpetration. Substance use disorders have long been identified as constituting a significant predictor of violent behaviour. Psychopathy traits have also been similarly recognised, but inter-relationships between psychopathy traits, features of substance use disorders and violence have been little explored. AIMS: To determine the degree to which shared variance between substance dependence symptoms and violence, as indicated by criminal charges for violent offences, among jailed men

Associations of alcohol use disorder, cannabis use disorder, and nicotine dependence with concurrent opioid use disorder in U.S. adults.

Polysubstance use of alcohol, cannabis, and nicotine has been shown to be correlated with opioid use disorder (OUD). The goal of this study was to determine whether alcohol use disorder (AUD), cannabis use disorder (CUD), and/or nicotine dependence were associated with concurrent OUD. Data came from the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (n = 282,768, 48.5% male). Weighted logistic regression was performed for experiencing OUD in the past year concurrent with AUD, CUD, nicotine dependence, all pairwise interactions, the three-way interaction, and demographic covariates. Association of co-occurring opioid or other substance use disorders with increased healthcare utilization in patients with depression.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) commonly co-occur with mental illness. However, the ongoing addiction crisis raises the question of how opioid use disorder (OUD) impacts healthcare utilization relative to other SUDs. This study examines the utilization patterns of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and: (1) co-occurring OUD (MDD-OUD); (2) a co-occurring SUD other than OUD (MDD-NOUD); and (3) no co-occurring SUD (MDD-NSUD). We analyzed electronic health records (EHRs) derived from multiple health systems across the New York City (NYC) metropolitan area between January 2008 and Decembe

Cocaine use and post partum psychiatric symptoms.

The association of mental health symptoms with cocaine use was studied among post partum women. Gestational cocaine use was determined by confidential interview or urine assay. A structured Psychiatric Symptom Index was used to measure mental health symptoms. Among 155 women, 24 (15%) used cocaine. Cocaine-using women had less education, higher parity, less weight gain during pregnancy, and used more cigarettes, marijuana, and opiates in pregnancy than nonusers. High frequency of symptoms (standardized Psychiatric Symptom Index score greater than or equal to 20) was found in 71% of women for t

Effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) mono-agonists on reward processing in animal models: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), indicated in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, influences reward processing, integral to disparate mental disorders. Emerging evidence suggests that GLP-1 receptor mono-agonists (GLP-1RAs) are potential treatment strategies for select mental disorders. Herein, we systematically review preclinical research documenting how GLP-1 and GLP-1RAs may impact reward function. METHODS: Relevant studies were identified through Web of Science, OVID (MedLINE, Embase, PsycInfo), and PubMed from database inception to June 28, 2026. Preclinical research
